    You never saw another Soviet Union film where another penguin loses his egg and switches the neighbor's egg with a rock taking it for himself. So the neighbor penguin till the end of his life waited for his baby to hatch. 😭😭😭 This is that scared me for life as a Russian little girl.

  • @rogovnin

    @rogovnin

    3 жыл бұрын

    True. The translation is awkward sometimes. For example, the man say actually something like: "He will be too busy" , but the translation is awkwardly literal: "He has forgotten about you". While he meant that Lolo will be so busy, that he wouldn't have time to play with the dog.

  • @kriscrafts3759

    Actually the red bearded man doesn't say that Lolo has forgotten Don, but rather "your penguin friend is older now, he has other stuff to do". And I think it's a lot more fitting! Can i get some likes so Steve can see this? As Russian, i was interested if this cartoon ever been released outside of the Motherland, to my surprise it was... And there some translation errors that caused some misunderstandings with need to be addressed: At 4:21 Mother said: "отстань пожалуйста!" with was translated as "Leave me alone, please!" ; However in the context this is wrong translation, right version should be "Please knock it off!" Then Lolo replied with: "Why should i knock it off? Mother response was: "Ну что за малыш! | What a baby/kid!" - it's was common phrase back in a day, basically it's mean a kid that hyperactive and ask a lot of questions. At 5:43 Lolo didn't know about chicken, because what he said was: "Don't be afraid! My friend lives here!" Ат 13:00 This one is a tricky one, last part of his phrase was: "..ему не до тебя" This can't be translated well in English, but... Literal Translation sounds somewhat like this: "he has no time for you" - with is give viewers wrong meaning/vibe from the character. That is why the translators made Liberal Translation of his phrase to: "forgotten all about you" - with it's still wrong. So, here comes my Liberal Translation take of this one: "Right now, your penguin friend is too overwhelmed with changes in his live, he can't even split his time with you..." - in my humble opinion this version give same vibe of what that man was originally said to his dog. Cheers! P.s. My English is not great tho, so, sorry if there any mistake were made!

You remind me of my youth when I traveled around the world. I've seen this film in all language versions, but the Soviet version is definitely the best. The German and French versions are still pretty good, the music just doesn't fit, it should be great. However I didn't like the English version at all.

    This review brings so much nostalgia! I watched that as a Russian kid and I LOVED it and still do for a great mixture of realist drama and cute comedy. And the majestic music and nature scenes! I can't say I was particularly traumatized by the violence and death scenes, though I did find them disturbing at the time - I think I took them for granted as something adding up to the realism and heartbreaking drama of a coming of age story to make the finale more meaningful. However, I can totally see how you find this inappropriate and too much for kids. Funny enough, I'm shocked by the graphic violence in Watership down, but Lolo did not scar me for life, still absolutely love this masterpiece of a film:)

    I have some points to point out and clarify: 1) Toto is not being an asshole, he is just strict, strict and kind actually. If you are from Russia it is pretty obvious, so it may be a cultural differense. 2) The redhead is very good looking, no really. I have no idea why aanyone would call him creepy. 3) The repeating animation. You said it yourself, this film is a collaboration with Japan. What are their animations infamous for? 4) About Lolo being chosen as leader. You have to differentiate with what penguins know, and what the viewer knows. Penguins know only that Lolo has an impressive record of surviving, so choosing him as leader when they need to survive is logical. I do realise some of this points in the video were made for comedic purposes. I addressed only the points I believe were real critisism.

    No one talks about how sad and difficult a penguin’s life is. I might get stuff wrong, but I’ll try to summarize what happens. Basically, the females lay the eggs and carry them to the nest. Then the males warm the eggs for a long time (I think a few hours to days), while the females eat. After that, the females go and warm the eggs for a bit while the males now hunt. This process goes on until the baby penguins hatch. Plus, that doesn’t even take into account the weather of the nests and the predators (most notably, seals). Again, I might have gotten stuff wrong so plz tell me if I got that wrong.

    It's such a pleasant surprise to see non-russian discussing the piece of our childhood! Btw, if You want more cartoon penguin depression, You've gotta check out Penguin's Memory: Shiawase Monogatari. It's a japanese animated film from 80s about war veteran penguin suffering from PTSD and travelling in search for quiet life. And fun fact: these penguins were originally mascots of some beer and their company gave total creative freedom to animators just so they would make something to promote their product lol

    10:41 Engaging in a migration (or even leading one) for the first time without anyone to guide you is a pretty common thing among birds, they just know the way somehow. It kinda serves the slightly realistic approach the folks who made the film were going for (with the nest materials stealing for instance)

    I'm Russian, and i loved this cartoon as a kid ( to be honest, i still adore it), the shooting part didnt scared me, i learned true facts about penguins and human violence. I still cry a little bit, then i'm listening main soundtrack :') Also, if you kinda like this old cartoon vibe - watch soviet cartoon " Tiger on sunflower", it is precious 💜

    I even dedicated a own video to this music. It is still inaccessible on KZread at the moment because I still have to practice making videos at my old age. Я даже посвятил этой музыке собственное видео. Моментально это еще только для меня выставлено на KZread, потому что в моем старом возрасте мне еще нужно еще учусь в создании видео. Но это не совсем недоступно, с ссылке можно это видеть.

    This was one of the movies that I watched regularly growing up so when I saw your thumbnail I was immediately hit with a wave of nostalgia. While the human faces creeped me out like any other kid I never did think much of the massacre scene. I think it was because Disney movies like the Lion King had already introduced me to the concept of death and I was never disturbed by blood. Honestly I found the scene where the gulls take the penguin eggs to be more traumatizing as a kid.

    I remember watching this movie as a kid after my family rented it from the video store once (one of the only times I ever experienced that; I was born in 2003 and video stores were all but gone by the time I was old enough to care about them). Despite the fact that I remember seeing it as a kid, I didn't remember much of it until I watched this video. It's important to know that I'm American as well, so I always knew it as "Scamper the Penguin" growing up. I would like to thank Mr. Steve Reviews for reminding me that this movie exists, watching this video helped me remember some very fond childhood memories that had been trapped in my subconscious for a long time. Honestly I'm glad I didn't see the original Russian dub of this film as it probably would have scared me, and I likely wouldn't be able to remember it as fondly as I do.

    I actualy own a dvd of this cartoon, the names werent changed but the whole penguin d-day scene was deleted and they repainted lolo to look like his dad, the old penguin instead of giving a speech about needing a new leader gave one about their home bot beeing safe anymore(the whole shooting scene was handled as if those were warning shots Safe to say i was spared the trauma

    5:43 As a Russian speaker, I need to say that this part is mistranslated. Lolo here actually just says "don't be scared", no chickens were mentioned. Moreover, Russian language simply doesn't have "chicken means coward" idioms - here chickens are more associated with being... not very smart, than being a coward.
