The Importance of Holiness: The Holiness of God with R.C. Sproul

Holiness is at the core of God's being. When Isaiah saw a vision of God, the seraphim around the throne called out, "Holy, holy, holy," proclaiming this all-important attribute of God's character. In this lesson, Dr. Sproul explores the essential importance of holiness as a quality uniquely attributable to God.
This is the 1st message in a series on God's holiness by R.C. Sproul. See other videos in the series: • The Holiness of God - ...

    I became aware of R.C. Sproul and Ligonier ministries whilst serving 19 years in California with a life sentence concurrent and 25 years in the Feds. They were quite surprised to learn that a small community of Reformed believers were inside the confines of Folsom prison and routinely provided us with free study bibles and other literature. May the Lord bless his ministry with much fruit and raise up men who will battle against the apostasy that destroys every faithful seed.

    If one ever wants to encapsulate our Lord God in one word, it is HOLY! It not only describes His law, but also and more important His "character"! The seriousness of this is so thorough that as Dr. Sproul communicates from Isaiah 6 verse 3, emphasizes it three times - "Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty" - revealing also God's triune nature and each person as Holy! Great lesson on our Lord's greatest attribute! My prayers that all who hear this lesson who are redeemed in Christ come away with a newfound and refreshed appreciation of our God and to those who don't be driven to their knees in fearful repentance to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior for their sin debt owed to our Holy and Majestic God!

    At 30:10 'Bible doesn't say that God is ''mercy, mercy, mercy” or “love, love, love” or “justice, justice, justice” or “wrath, wrath, wrath” but that He is “Holy, holy, holy” This is a dimension of God that consumes His very essence. and when it is manifested to Isaiah, we read in Isaiah 6: 4, "At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke." The inanimate, lifeless, unintelligible parts of creation in the presence of the manifestation of the holiness of God had the good sense to be moved. How can we, made in his image be indifferent or apathetic to his majesty? God alone is holy.' These words just shook me and took me to a another level of understanding His holiness. thank you R.C Sproul, even tho he's with the LORD now, he left a legacy that I and many others will always remember.

    So were the angels prevented from seeing Jesus or the Father? And too, was Moses seeing the back side of the glory of the Father or the Son? And last, who was Isaiah seeing in the temple, the Father or the Son? Hhm?

  • @codyh39

    @codyh39

    5 жыл бұрын

    I hope I can convey an adequate answer to your questions. The angels were not forbid to look at God, but rather they couldn't withstand the sight of God. Even for the angels (seraphims in this case), God's glory is far too great for them to behold. So they must shield themselves from God's glory and holiness. But also we see here in Isaiah 6 that not only do the seraphims have to shield their faces, they had to cover their feet because of God's holiness. We can reference back a couple different places for this but we'll go to Exodus 3 when Moses encountered the presence of God in the burning bush and God told Moses to remove his shoes for he is standing on holy ground. So it's not that they angels were forbidden to look at God, they simply couldn't bear the glorious sight. Also, to answer that, the angels, Isaiah, and Moses witnessed God the Father. Also we can go back to Matthew 17 when we read the account of the transfiguration of Jesus and see that Moses and Elijah laid eyes on Jesus Christ. There is something we must remember about God's glory is that through God, His glory becomes a physical attribute. In Revelation 21, John describes that God's glory will be what lights and brightens the day in New Jerusalem. It's specifically God's radiance in glory that physically lights the realm. Hopefully that helped spark a little though. If you need more clarity please let me know, I'd love to help even more if I need to.

    The Hebrew word "Adon" does not mean "the sovereign lord," nor is it the highest title that can be granted. This is incorrect, and Dr. Sproul really should know better. Adon simply means "lord," and is equivalent to what we English-speaking Americans might mean if we called somebody "sir" as a sign of respect. "Adonai" is simply a form of the word meaning "our lord," with the additional syllable added onto the end as a pronoun. It often refers to God because of the context, but not always; for instance, Sarah refers to her husband Abraham as "my lord" using similar language in Genesis 18:12. In Matthew 22:43, Jesus quotes that passage from Psalm 110, but does not pretend that "Lord" means deity or anything like it, simply that it indicates that whoever is being called "Lord" is of a higher station than the writer of the Psalm himself, which was David. His reasoning was, if he were of a lesser station, as one of David's progeny would be, he would not be calling him "sir." (Mind you, I don't have any argument with the notion that Jesus was God incarnate. I simply don't think one can use application of the term "Adonai" to prove that.) It gripes my grits when preachers, and especially preachers of high reputation like Dr. Sproul, make claims for the language that simply aren't true.
