The Iconic Drumming Behind “Crazy Train” | Ozzy Osbourne Song Breakdown
Former Ozzy Osbourne drummer Tommy Aldridge shows you how he played "Crazy Train" live. And it's not what you'd expect!
"If anyone led me up the primrose path, it was Randy Rhoads.”
Tommy is known for many things - playing with Whitesnake, Motörhead, and Yngwie Malmsteen to name a few - but he arguably made some of his biggest impressions backing Ozzy Osbourne in the '80s, joining Ozzy's band for the 1981 Blizzard Of Ozz tour and tracking drums on 1983's Bark At The Moon and several live recordings.
A heavy-hitting rock guru through and through, you can imagine how Tommy translated Ozzy's songs to the stage.

I’ll never forget walking into the studio when Tommy was warming up for this video. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone play with power like he does, and his attention to detail is insane. Something I think a lot of drummers overlook. He also had the highest respect for Randy Rhoads and wanted to make sure his legacy was honored in the videos we worked on together. Cheers Tommy, you’re a legend!🤘🏻

I was fortunate enough to attend a TA clinic in Palm Desert years ago when Tommy had his carbon-fiber kit. It's true: the power we felt coming from him was insane, as we were all only 3 feet away from him playing his solo from the Tribute album! He told us funny stories about having to record 3 different tempos per song for Ozzy. Ozzy would be drawn to whatever tempo fit the type of drugs he was on: if he was on speed, he liked the faster tempo, weed, slower, alcohol, medium. Heheheheh!!

NONE OF IT would have existed without Bob Daisley who even insisted they'd fly in Randy R. and also got Lee Kerslake in The Blizzard of Ozz band (later hijacked into being the Ozzy Osbourne backing band). Lee wrote the drum parts and wrote a whole lot more for the Diary of a madman, including singing melodies. Lee was trained to play the piano too and sang like a frontman, so he had a complete set of skills. Respect where respect is due and kudos in due order to right targets please.
In 1978, Tommy got me into drumming. He's what got me into drumming. I haven't stopped. Thank you, Tommy.

It's true though. As he said, in many cases studio versions have different goals. This kind of playing would have been too busy for the studio version where they purposely want the focus to be on Randy's guitar and Ozzy's vocals.
What an absolute living legend Tommy Aldridge is. The first time I saw him perform live was with Ozzy, Randy and Rudy here in Tampa when I was 16 years old in 1981. As a young drummer, he absolutely blew my mind. Now that I'm an old drummer, he astounds me even more. My playing style is absolutely reflective of his although I am nowhere near his level of creativity and power. What really strikes me, too, is his humility in this video. He makes it a point, several times, to note that what he does isn't necessarily "better" than what Lee did, it's just different. What an amazing performer and person he is. Thanks for sharing this, Drumeo!

The first time I saw him live, he was playing at an outdoor location. There were several big name drummers there, for a charity event. As I pulled up, was getting out of my vehicle, I was going, "whoahhhh... this must be what everyone always talks about with this guy... that must be Tommy Aldridge". I was blown away just opening my truck door. There is something over-the-top about the way he plays that comes across live in a very powerful way.
I was at US festival in '83 and watched one of my biggest influences kill that performance. I've literally waited half a lifetime to see this video. Watching him play it just like he did while my 14 Year old eyes glazed over in awe all those years ago. What an exceptional treat for me, now in my 50's. This video, with its resolution and many camera angles explains a lot to me that I've wondered about. Thank you Tommy and Drumeo. Let me add that years later I met Tommy at the NAMM show, in line for food, and he was the most gracious, kind and humble Rockstar I've ever met. What a lovely human being. Damn, that cymbal choking technique sounds awesome, he's playing notes/tones with it. Never noticed him doing it so apparant, need to check if he does it more often like this.
What a treasure of a video. Great explanation of techniques too... such a treat.
his conditioning after all these years is amazing ! What a great performance !
Thank you Tommy! The smile on your cheeks while talking about Randy says all...
Great performance from this legendary rock drummer. The older he gets, the harder he plays. In the clips from the 80's it looks like he didn't play this hard. I mean, he has always been a heavy hitter but, at 72, he's taken it to another level. Awesome!
Such a respectful drummer…love how he talks and respects the music and fellow band mates.
WOW Tommy, Blown Away that You can Still Pull Off "Crazy Train," I Bow to Your Awesomeness!!!
This dude is 72 years old and still one of the most tasteful absolute powerhouse drummers out there. A lifetime of inspiration right there!
I am a 53-year-old guitar player started on drums I can only hope to live to be 73 I couldn't imagine or better yet I pray that I can only do half of what this man just done to them drums one of the greatest drummers alive hands down rip Randy rhoads
I've seen this legend live in 2006 with Whitesnake and my jaw dropped on the floor. I have no idea how he keeps being that intense, ferocious and accurate behind the kit in his 70s! He is a freak of nature..
Brutal performance!!!!! thanks Mr. Aldridge🤟🤟
I'm a bodybuilding fan and I must say the dude has got some lower leg muscle, front and rear (calves). Total respect for someone in his 70's. Wow.

And this is the reason he was one of the first that could play fast double bass without any particular technique but only muscle force! Incredible

Right! I noticed the same thing. Knowing I'll never be THAT good but also never have the kick speed like he has. Those look like runners legs of a much younger man!
