The Hutterites | To Care And Not To Care | Full Movie | John A. Hostetler | Arnold Hofer
Spiritual cousins of the Mennonites and Amish, the Hutterites live simply with austerity. By a way of life that is supremely communal rather than individualistic, the Hutterites have rid themselves of poverty, homicide and anxiety about the future.

These people are the salt of the earth. I bought an acreage 10km from a colony and was building a house. Who was the first to stop in and say hello? Who was the first to offer me advice on septic? Who was the first, last and only people to offer free help? oh yea and who gave me a smoked chicken at christmas!

Having worked with a group like this in Canada I have spent the balance of my life wishing I could have stayed and been a life long part of them. The life of the Hutterite is one of the best life’s that any man or woman could have. The conflict and narcissism of the outside world is the best example of why the whole world would be better off living like this. Imagine a world where no man or woman would go to war. No government could force people to do what they unitedly agreed they would not do. It makes an honest government when they realize the people hold the power because they are satisfied to be as they are.

I'm from Montana and surrounded by Hutterite colonies here. Worked alongside them, even dated a Hutterite girl. They're mostly solid, hard working people. Like anyone, they have their faults and in these parts they have a very mixed reputation. I think a lot of outside folks have a very whimsical view of them really. Most of them are great, but we've always had to keep a close eye on our things because we've caught them stealing more than once and they'll deny it even while holding our own gear in their hands! We've also had land disputes, damaged equipment, and just all around rude experiences with them. Some of the colonies tend to be very ruthless as well, and wouldn't stop to help you if your life depended on it. I see them frequently in town shopping, Walmart and the Chevy dealer are two of their favorites. Again, there are many good and honest Hutterite people, but my experience and those of my neighbors is very mixed.

Very interesting and I also find it peaceful. But what stood out to me was the lack of laughter and outward manifestations of joy. I saw little facial expressions, no joyous communicating while dining or when the ladies were painting the ceiling or washing the floor. When the girls were asked if they wanted to move or stay they all said "I don't care." I think there is more to this story that will hopefully be covered in future documentaries.

@@sccello Interesting observations, and you are probably right. That being said, with Giselle's videos, I sometimes get the feeling that there are things that are "brushed under the carpet". I am not really sure why I feel that way. Maybe it is just that, even though it iseems so idyllic and ideal in many ways, it is still a "high demand-group" and maybe also a "high control-group" where a small number of men seem to have a lot of power. There is also a video by another youtuber, called "Queer hutterite" where I get the impression that it is very hard if you don't fit in, and that leaving is not easy either. Edit: typos

Read 1 Kings 19 and Luke 9:28-36 I think it will help you understand where God wants us to stand in this world. You are absolutely right in the fact that yes God is all that matters, this world sucks, and being Christ-like is our calling. But just as we have heard the good news and had our communion restored with God through the blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection, we ought to tell others about God’s grace and faithfulness. Elijah ran away from the sucky world and hid in a cave and God called him out of it because God had work for him in this world. As we are filled with God’s presence, we need to overflow in people’s lives, laying down our lives for them, just as Christ did. Peter, John, and James were taken up to a mountain to pray with Jesus. There they experienced the Glory of God in a way like never before. Their desire was to set up tents and stay there. But God’s presence came down and convicted them that Jesus was His beloved son, who came to accomplish God’s will. They knew that coming down the mountain was necessary, because there was work to do. We are here to do the same. Imagine if Jesus stayed with God and never came down to this sucky world? We would have never have received salvation, our sins wouldn’t have been atoned for. This sucky world needs Jesus and we have the living spirit of God in us. We are the salt and light to the world. We need to proclaim to Gospel. As Jesus himself said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, until the very end of the age.” I think it’s absolutely beautiful that these people are living according to God’s word and close to His presence. But I believe Jesus made it clear that the gospel is not to be kept and sheltered, but to be delivered to all the corners of the earth. We ought to live as Christ did, and be an example to the nations. But that also means going and making disciples, reaching out to those around us, because this broken world is desperate for Jesus. “for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭10:13-15‬ ‭

My husband did a lot of business with the local colonies, and my aunt and uncles were neighbors of a colony. When my husband left the kids and I for another woman, I would come home from work to find several dozen buns, or giant bags of carrots or onions or potatoes on my step. I really appreciated it and it touched me deeply. One day they stopped by with something when I was home. I thanked the elder, who was a Santa bearded sort of looking fellow, I was in my 30's, he took hold of my arm and rubbed it and looked right into my eyes and said, "sometimes a woman needs a little help". I told him nicely, I appreciated the food, but I didn't need any other kind of help. They left, and never dropped off anything again. I was kind of sickened, and heartsick and disappointed. I guess there can be a bad apple in any barrel.

I'm not a Christian at all, i grew up with no religion until i was ready for it, it was not forced upon me like many religious communities do to their children. My faith you would seriously detest unless you were open minded - however, i found almost all Christians to be "holier than thou" which is fine by me as i am not a holy person, i do not however, like to be singled out just because i believe something else than Christians do. I would like to stay with a Hutterite colony for a while and see for myself what it is all about, or the Mennonites or the Amish, i doubt very much i would be welcome or accepted though. I am all for hard work and easy work too :) all for helping out everyone, and all for helping out anyone who needs it on a singular level, like helping a person fix their equipment or haul some items, anyways thanks for your insights here, hopefully i will live with Hutterites for a while.

But that's not the motivation! The reason is to follow God with all our hearts in Love! Check out Jesus Job and Abraham! God can also give us tough assignments to follow through on! God isn't Santa ! 🎅 Who gives you every good thing that YOU want! We pass also through good places and hard times serving the Lord! And we know that His love is Eternal and unfailing and He will reward All His Children no matter what they pass through in his world because He SAID that He would Reward Them! It seems that too many Americans have lost their belief in God in order to "worship" money. Our Country is deteriorating fast. Everyone thinks his/her view is the only one that matters. When in reality people need each other and should be celebrating that. It's all competition in Capitalism.and very little community. Every one out for themselves. Take what you want by any means. It is heartbreaking to live in a society where there is no trust. Where the bullies are allowed to run the Government's. Where there is no equality. Those who only strive for personal power and material wealth must trade in their soul, their self-respect, integrity and honor. They cannot respect others when they have no respect for themselves. Wanting more and never having enough to satisfy them Even though in this way of life is so clearly pointless, no matter how much the have there will always be someone or something more that they covet. There can be no happiness or spiritual reward. I'm so moved by the strength and faith it takes to willingly put the good of all over personal gain. To put God first. The Anabaptist groups, the Amish, Mennonites and Huttorites have this belief in God and community that keeps them separate by choice from the worst inclinations in people. "In the World, but not of it." Gives satisfaction and meaning to their lives. Morality, Compassion and Honor. Everyone is valued. In a word...Love

Hutterites, what can I say about them. The greatest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting in Canada. Hutterites are what I would describe as the perfect neighbours. They are ALWAYS willing to lend a helping hand to anybody that needs it. My sister teaches at a Hutterite colony in Alberta and she invited me out one day and I thought that they wouldn't; like having a visitor to a colony, but they welcomed me and her class had the sweetest, funniest and outgoing children that I have ever been around. I know that they aren't totally perfect, but they definitely are a group of people that I think every person in the developed world especially, should learn from. They live life very simply, self-sufficient, yet at the same time always working together for their communal benefit. The children are disciplined so they grow up to be respectful and hard-working. Having little technology and a slower pace of life is just such a breath of fresh air and I wish I could do the same. I love the Hutterites.

I used to live for a while close to Mennonite communities in South America. First they were just somehow unique neighbors, but as time passed I began to get interested in their history and their culture. Being myself German-speaker facilitated contact somehow, even though they spoke a completely different dialect than mine, otherwise we communicated in Spanish or English and so I learned how some random individuals thought about their way of life and about their relationship with the countries that host them. It was always interesting, sometimes challenging, since their views on certain things were so different than ours. As a social scientist I guess I also learned to appreciate and even admire some of their ways of working, sharing, and looking for the other, but at the same time I was horrified over the kind of agriculture they practiced, which was very destructive for the rain forest and water resources... I continue to be horrified! even as some things are much more environmentally friendly now! One colony can differ much from another but I guess all are very decent hardworking people that do not bother other neighbors, nor the authorities. And in many regions they have advanced to transform themselves into a sizable economic power, which also benefits the region at large. But the environmental problem remains, and I do not think that this communal extensive-intensive agricultural system is viable even in the near future. Changes must be made and these will certainly demand deep changes in their way of life too. Perhaps not al colonies will be able to master this new-definition and new-focusing. I do not bother about what they believe or not, or about their way of life, even though we perceive some things as anachronistic and many as just stupid! but even so we should remain tolerant... BUT this tolerance only functions until we reach the increasingly complex limits of economic systems and environmental issues, and it is precisely here were we could and probably will find increasing conflicts with these agricultural religious communities, their social pattern, and their economic strategies...

Is it worth it if I cannot explore my individuality or go to college? Is it worth it if I can't play in an orchestra, learn to cook Japanese cuisine, participate in a 5K, read the books I want to read, etc? I lived in Three Hills Canada from 2013-2015. There were many in our area who lived on big farms. they sold big ready to roast chickens, many fruits and vegetables at the local farmers market. We bought all they offered including bedding plants. Enjoyed their produce very much.b

Very interesting to see this documentary. I especially loved the community Spirit and oh the beautiful melodies in the singing, no musical instruments, lovely. Good luck to wherever they may be. Advanced, forward thinkers yet still maintain their own religious beliefs. Admirable.

Just prof that there are really very few things needed in life to be happy, joyfull, and fulfilled, very few. To quote Einstein "simplicity is elegance" Q: and just what are they missing? A:.....nothing!

I visited a Hutterite Colony in Pleasant Valley, east of Alberta in the summer of of 1975. They taught the same bible history that I experienced in Denmark in 1952

What a breath of fresh air!! After watching videos today on Marmonism, followed by another on the Jehovahs Witnesses, these people come closest to living out the great commandment " love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and strength, and your neighbour as yourself". Their lifestyle affirms each member, and seems to follow Biblical principles scrupulously. Such security for each member!

What a beautiful piece of history immortalised in this documentary. This looks like it was filmed in 1970. Does anyone know when this was filmed? I just researched about these people recently as I had never hear of them before. Interesting history which I think we could all learn from today. Community spirit and one for all regardless of perceived differences. ☺️

I know, and I do believe God requires His people to respect the animals He has given us for food and that means caring for them and giving them respect. Not a lot here and that tells me a lot.

Why, in my mid 40's, having looked at a wide variety of American cultures, beliefs etc, have I not heard of Hudderites before today? I'd love to spend a week, maybe even a month, with them, just to get a good personal feel for what they're about. They seem pretty legit and solid
