THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM - (Redux) Tolkien Fan Film

Фильм және анимация

[2019 version, improved edit and audio]
The Hunt for Gollum is an independent film based on appendices in The Lord of the Rings. It was produced entirely by fans, and released free to the Internet in 2009. Locations include Epping Forest and Snowdonia, north Wales. Awards include 'Best Fiction Produced for the Web', 2009 and Best Live Action at Balticon.
Prompted by Gandalf, a ranger by the name of Strider sets out to search for the creature Gollum, who knows the location of the Ring.
This is a not-for-profit unofficial fan-made film, created from scratch by indie film makers in the U.K. as a tribute to The Lord of the Rings books (and movies).

When I read the complete story of the battle for Gondolin, I thought, "This should have been integrated into the Silmarillion." Christopher T. probably thought it would have been too much to integrate large parts of the story of Gondolin, or Turin, or the Lay of Leithian into the Silmarillion, but he underestimated the fans' appetite for his father's works. The Silmarillion twice as long still would have been too short.

I watched it again after many years, and it's still so beutifull in its simplicity. No overly ambitious epicness, as little CGI as possible, only good acting and a focused narrative on a compelling story. The "sack trick" is simply brilliant ;) it avoids having too many close-up shots of Gollum, it fits the narrative and its still very expressive. The sack and Aragorn have more chemistry on screen that many hollywood actors XD

As stated, "redux" means "remade". This film was well known and appreciated a long time ago. Its story is appealing to veterans. It clears out lots of why's. Aragorn, for example, as a decendant of "the Dunedain" has magical powers. When he in this film lays flat with an ear to the ground he can hear approaching enemies. Fine things like that was missed and forgotten in Peter's saga.

That was REALLY excellent!!! Far, far surpassed my expectations of an amateur film. Very well-shot and well-directed, the two most important aspects of ANY film. This is something which is sorely missing in many a high-budget film. Excellent acting, costume, makeup, set design, LIGHTING was really lovely too. Also excellent choice of scene locations - really wonderful to see so much of the wilderness scenery which is quite lacking in the big-budget films. Apart from pure entertainment value, it was nice to see some of the detail of the Rangers and Aragorn's travels in the Wild. So all-round, my highest salutations to everyone involved and thank you SO very much for gifting us with this.

I watched the LOTR movies on DVD while living in Ypres in Flanders. At that time I was very deep into WW1 and practically lived 90% of my life in the past, immersing myself in all the horrors and incredible stories of that war. I wrote two screenplays during that time, both set in WW1 in and around Ypres. It was very fascinating to watch (and later also read) Tolkien's work against the backdrop of the Great War which imo inspired him a lot when he wrote the novels. I even sent the scripts to Wingnut Films, not really expecting any feed-back. However, they got back to me, but only to tell me that Peter's agenda was full for the next decade or so:( But to even get an answer alone was just amazing. I sent another war-related script to Richard Attenborough (he was still alive back then) and was told that it had been received. Not much later, unfortunately, his PA ran off with half of the scripts and stuff she was working on ( I never got her name, I only spoke to his secretary on the phone) and they couldnt get hold of her. :( I tried to produce a short version or teaser myself, but couldn't raise the funds and kind of tried to forget about the whole project. So, seeing what you were able to do here on nothing much more than a shoestring is really mindblowing and gets me thinking...

I'd be absolutely STOKED if this were made into an entire series of films. And with a bigger budget? Who knows how far that would go, it would be incredible 😊 But for real, only having(what I've read...) 3-5k as your budget? This is extremely well done. Actors, setting and CGI scenery, not to mention it's other uses, make-up, costumes, etc 👍 You all did a fantastic job 🤘☺

This is an expertly made film, representing well the growing foundations of The Fellowship. When Aragorn catches Gollum, and is in his presence for days, he begins to learn of the true danger of Sauron's malice and the corruption of The Ring as he witnesses them through Gollum. "Gollum's wretchedness is beyond our help. He will never be free," As Gandalf says, is an eerie foreshadowing of Gollum's role in The War of the Ring.

Well, that was certainly a loving dedication to Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy. I wonder what they could have created if they weren't paying an homage to another director's style of filmmaking but rather created an original vision as inspired by the author and the literature. Great job on the music!

To all the ones that are hating on the hobbit trilogy: download the maple edit or the m4 book edit, fan edits that take the extended hobbit movies as source material and edit them down to one movie of approximately four hours running time. The result is excellent and the perfect companion to the LOTR movies. All the superfluous crap is removed. And there are many more hobbit fan edits to check out.

*Aragorn looks into Galadriel's mirror* Gandalf in the Shire: "I looked everywhere for the creature Gollum" Aragorn: "Dude...!" I think the Gollum-talk could have done with a redraft. He could have become more intense and expressive of his anger when reliving his memories of Bilbo and losing the Ring. The smile makes him seem self-aware of his villainy, as though he has an advantage or knows something other people don't, but at that moment he has no advantage at all. He has to stalk the Fellowship and just hope to find the ringbearer isolated. He can't gloat until he's given the task of leading the ringbearer into a trap. A twisted hateful grimace would have fit better. And the CGI was painful. Orc costumes and makeup were well done! Not sure if the fight scene would survive an autopsy, and I think Aragorn could have used a partner to believably take on a roving band of orcs. That other ranger, or Glorfindel, or even Legolas, who seemed to act as though he met Aragorn before the council at Rivendell, in the movie. Enjoyable regardless. Hats off to everyone involved!

In "The Unfinished Tales" Christopher Tolkien shows his father's notes on the matter. Apparently, Gollum had been trying to cross the Misty Mountains by going through Moria, but he couldn't open the doors of Dúrin (which reputedly required two people to open from the inside, as a security measure), so he was stuck there. And that is when the Fellowship entered Moria, and Gollum stalked them from then on. That's from Tolkien's notes, however. At the very least, we know that he never meant for Gollum to make it to the Shire. As for what the LOTR books say, I would have to look it up.
