Imagine this: It's the 80s and I'm a kid from Buenos Aires, Argentina ... there is no internet ... there are no cell phones .... and these boys appear on a tv channel !!! They are one of the most unjustly forgotten groups ... or at least they had less success ... Today I am 45 and there is always a place in the radios of my country for Bow down ... Build or Happy hour Forever love for Housemartins

Jose, tengo 52. At that time I lived in Parque Chas. I remember having gone to buy 2 cassettes in Churba (Juramento and Cabildo), the CDs just came out, and they were very expensive. In one of those caves they sold the copies on cassette (TDK). what beautiful times those. hug

I have no words. ❤️ This track transports me back to happier simpler times in my life when me and all my friends were proper friends. We all knew each other so well and knew exactly what each other was doing. We're all still friends to this day, but not like back in the 80s and 90s. It makes me a little sad and I want to go back. Thanks for the memories.

I died for the Housemartins in the 80ties. Finally a band that was as "ugly" as me, but witty and intelligent. Their first album is a must and I still regularly play it. Married now with 3 adult kids and no worries about looks anymore.

They only seemed beautiful cos we were kids. Think about it though, the cold War, aids was rampant, racism was rife, there were fights everywhere, Northern Ireland etc. if we went abroad it would cost a fortune to keep in touch with lived ones and family back home. The 80s were not all that great really

People in the 1980s were looking back to the 1960s and saying EXACTLY the same thing about the 1980s - and so it goes on. Always be careful that you are not simply becoming generically anti-change - some things are better, some things are worse. Change always creates wins and losses.

I never understood the English until I had the opportunity to read the lyrics online today. And this is very impressive! The visual performance and the presentation of the song that bring it all across: We have style, we have human value and we are singing beautifully about human and social dispair brought on by social economical change, we have anticipated. This song we can sing all over Europe, it is strong and at the same time peaceful. Only people in England it seems can have such style.

I remember when this came out, I always thought it was a really catchy great song, but it wasn't until someone posted the lyrics in the verses that it really hit me, it's one of those songs that its difficult to work out what he's singing about apart from the chorus (obviously) really clever appropriate lyrics when you think it came out 30 odd years ago, still relevant now, that's what a great song is all about, timeless.

  • @pauldickinson6943

for some strange reason I didn't really take a lot of notice of the lyrics, just the melody and the chorus, ( and I'm a guitarist) it's always the melody that hooks you, there was a a band from Liverpool that were really good at that, unfortunately I can't remember what they were called.

Something's going on, a change is taking place Children smiling in the street have gone without a trace This street used to be full, it used to make me smile And now it seems that everyone is walking single file And many hand their heads in shame That used to hold them high And those that used to say hello Simply pass you by Think for a minute, stop for a minute Think for a minute, stop for a minute I always said it could, they never though it would The people look so pitiful, I'm thinking that it should And now it's almost here, now its on its way I can't help saying told you so and have a nice final day And nothing I could say Could ever make them see the light Now apathy is happy that It won without a fight Think for a minute, Stop for a minute Think for a minute, Stop for a minute And many hang their heads in shame that used to hold them high {Think for a minute} And those that used to say hello simply pass you by {Stop for a minute} Think for a minute, stop for a minute Think for a minute, stop for a minute

From a time of turbulent change, the public split between those always hurry-scurrying along to the beat of Thatcherism and those languishing on the scrapheap, both sides resigned to their kind of apathy. As in another single out at about that time (start of autumn 1986),Heartland by The The,the cranes moved on the skyline, knocking down the familiar, once cherished but since neglected old and starting to erect the market forces-driven new.

Great stuff from the boys... plenty of young pretenders to their throne but none will ever cut the mustard. Saw 'em at Tower but had to go back next day for my shoes.... Oh those wonderful memories of sticky threadbare carpet! What a shithole but always good for a laugh and an hour! Might write a song called Tower for an hour...; gotta be a winner!
