The Honda XR150L Gets Some CHEAP & EASY Added Power!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It’s time to add a bit of power and responsiveness to the Honda XR150L, while also fixing how lean these things come from the factory! Today we’re de-restricting the stock XR150 air box in two different ways, then cracking open the carburetor to re-jet both the main jet and the pilot jet.
After taking off the air box snorkel, taking off the air filter screen, jetting the main jet to a 110, jetting the pilot jet to a 38, and adjusting the idle a bit, the XR150 is running better than ever!! She now starts right up on the first try, holds a strong idle, has a more snappy response, holds at speed better…the list goes on! For only $10, these changes can’t be beat 🙌🏻
The set of jets I used on the XR150- amzn.to/43MXDGo

    I have a crf150l here in Indonesia. It's bit more of an off road oriented version, inverted forks, fuel injected, electric start but also has a kick starter (yours is blanked off). Your engine looks identical, if you want look up BRT Racing Indonesia. They make cams, big bore kits.....Good quality for little $. The big restriction is the intake port in the head. I ported my, got cam, valve springs, full no name exhaust and $20 ecu tune by local guy. My served me as "adv" bike for 7000 miles, it's awesome if you do 50 mph on tight roads or dirt. Now I have it in full dirt bike set up, 13t front, 55 rear sprocket, off road knobies, and it kicks ass on trails.

    Your idea to remove the header to get the bowl off was genius. I changed the pilot to 38 and the main to 115. I also turned up the idle screw a quarter turn. I did not mess with the air box or the exhaust (it was too loud without the spark arrestor). Cold start today was perfect at 50 deg F., 600 ft elevation. Half choke started right up with no priming. 15 seconds later choke off had perfect idle. Top speed was still 57 mph but I am 215 lbs. I may try a different front sprocket next. Thanks

    I have the same bike in the philippines. I learned to start the bike the easiest is to push the electric start for 3 seconds and then give it throttle. Starts every time without choke. Before I was having problems starting first time in the morning even though it's a warmer climate.

    The best way to start the xr150 is to put the choke all the way up and when you press the ignition give it gas and hold it for about 10 seconds, after that put it to half choke right after letting go of the throttle to let it idle. Also note that the bike will always die on full choke unless youre giving it gas. The xr150l has a hard start unless you do the "give 'er gas on full choke" method, i guess its because it makes the fuel richer and the longer you give it gas on full choke the more rich fuel mixes in the engine. Because ive noticed that if i give it 30 seconds of gas on full choke and then switch to half choke to let it idle it actually idles really good and fast-ish and doesnt sound like its about to die every second lmao.

    The jetting (needle adjustment also) will surly help all the way around. The pipe & slip-on with jetting will also be a small but noticeable positive. Honda put the fuel petcock with catch bowl on for two reasons. The fuel valve is supposed to "off" when you park the bike because the weight of the fuel in the tank is always pushing on that float needle & seat. If for any number of reasons fuel were to slowly trickle by the float seat & needle, the fuel will flow either to the carb overflow tube or worse into the engine, cylinder past the piston rings and into the engine where it will dilute the motor oil which is bad over time. People often just forget this, but it does happen and repeated over time is bad. The bowl below the fuel valve is to catch water and sediment from getting to the carburetor and crating problems there. You unscrew the bowl and empty it out taking note of what comes out. Over time you will see the see what comes out as the seasons and miles go by. All this information and much more used to come in the owner's manual. Hopefully new bikes will continue to provide these manuals even though people seem to be proud to say they never read them. As mechanics will often tell people "that problem could have been avoided if you read the owner's manual. That screen you took out of the airbox is a flame arrestor to stop your air filter from catching fire if engine backfires. The black baffle was designed to bring in air from that area but help redirect hot air that flows over the engine from going right into the air intake, it also helps lower the intake sound. Taking those things out of the intake does nothing to help and may even hurt power, ether way the amount it could help any power issues would not be measurable. Although even a little hot air would a be measurable negative. So often riders will believe they are getting more power from doing things that just make the engine louder, in truth it's not a way to judge performance. Discounting the noise and feeling the responsiveness of carb jetting is a better way.

    What about the fuel mixture screw? When I re-jetted my DR650 I had to open it up quite a bit. Looking at the parts list it does have one. It appears to have a plug over it. The plug should be easy to remove. Drill a small hole in it and screw a screw in a bit and wriggle it out. If you draw an imaginary line down the side of your carb, if it’s on the engine side it’s a fuel mixture screw. If it’s on the airbox half it’s an air mixture screw. I couldn’t tell by the parts diagram where it connected to the carb. Try a bigger main jet and maybe get some more top end

    Pretty sure someone in the comments might of already said it, and I don't know if Burch will see this comment, but the snorkel that you said you have no idea what it does besides limit airflow says it's function in the name.. "Snorkel", it's designed to keep water at bay hence the flared ends of the intake tubes on it, Honda has no idea what people are going to do with these bikes, especially when cleaning with a pressure washer, so they try to mitigate any and all potential for water to unintentionally enter the airbox, all manufacturers do this to some extent.

    Good job. See, carbs aren't nearly the devil people make them out to be. :) I suspected you should have gone to the next size pilot but I didn't hear any popping on decel in the video. If it starts to crop up as the weather gets hotter and dryer, there is always the option. I think there is room for a slightly bigger main also. You opened up the air flow quite a bit. If you go back in to the carb for the pilot change, throw a main in there that is one or two sizes up to see what happens. You can try a sparkplug burn color check but unless they are done correctly, they can give false readings. The airbox screen was a backfire spark preventer. In the event of a backfire, a spark could be pushed up into the air filter causing it to catch fire. There were a lot of burned up bikes back in the day till those screens were introduced. Last, your jet kit seemed to work out just fine. I always recommend keihin brand jets with the star logo as I tried an off brand once that was waaay too lean on a two stroke dirtbike. You know what you are getting with keihin but your bike seems to run well.

    Unicam engine. Also unless there is 100% a creditable post of someone doing something like this successfully with detailed info, this is absolutely something you don't do without looking at timing of the lobes. You can, and will, cause valve interference with either the valves themselves or the piston.

    Your intake mods dont do anything. That engine doesnt suck enough air to be affected by the snorkel removal. Most of your performance gains come from taking the stock muffler off, which has a catalytic converter built in. After market exhausts dont have this.

  • @LifeOfBurch

    @LifeOfBurch

    I agree that the aftermarket exhaust has more of a performance benefit than the air box mods, but to say the air box mods “don’t do anything” is just not true. As minimal as the benefits may be for an engine this small, the benefits are still there. And even if it actually “didn’t do anything”…it’s free. So who cares? 😂

    Per EPA certification, the 150L does not have a cat. Even still, motorcycles use a larger substrate orifice size for flow. For cars I believe the standard is 1PSI at 2500RPM, so the effect is minimal. However, the engine IS choked by the intake by the carb and port size. The airbox volume on it's own is larger than the cylinder can pull in, times two it seems.

    I use an aluminum fuel bottle to catch the Navi's gas when I drain the carb. There should be a rubber hose that the fuel drains out of. I catch it instead of letting it hit the pavement but each their own. Thought that would be helpful going forward.

    Congrats you just lost power, fuel mileage and reliability. Cutting open a pressurized air box to get more air in is the equivalent of drilling holes in your home speaker box’s to let more sound out, not hate buddy, I enjoy your videos but this is bad advice. Spend money on your suspension or comfort items that is the best way to improve any bike.

  • @AliasTekTV

    @AliasTekTV

    The airbox is not pressurized lol. At most, he's added roughly 1-2% of fuel that is only used on the idle circuit of the carburetor. It only is used for low engine speed. The only part I question is the filter screen, and most people won't go through the trouble of doing it and it has minimal performance effects.
