The XR 150L is NOT a new bike. It has been sold in Mexico and South America for the past TWENTY years! It has more than proven itself reliable.

There seems to be this misconception that the xr 150l is built in Mexico by a Chinese partnership when, in actuality, it is assembled in Mexico by this conglomerate, and the parts are actual honda parts with honda oversight . If honda puts their name and reputation on it, then the quality control has to be there. Kawasaki has many of its smaller motorcycles assembled by bajaj in India, but all the parts are Kawasaki and have the backing of Kawasaki. The Japanese are very particular about their reputation and quality.

It all sounds great until you get to the showroom. The dealers are adding market adjustments of up to $2000. They will always find a way to ruin a good intention on the part of a manufacturer. Shame on the dealers that charge grossly excessive adds making it impossible to enjoy an affordable dual sport.

Tw is 5200 out the door plated considering how much every bike is now thats still hell of a deal for something that has doubled in value. Most used tw's are even in the 3-4k range with high mileage

Lots of folk have the XR 150, myself included. I also own and ride a Harley Sportster and I've been riding for around 55 years in one way or another. The Japanese made bikes are for sure quality but in my estimate they're way overpriced. I remember when everyone hated on Japanese bikes and often destroyed them for show. At the end of the day it's the best I could afford at the time. Just ride pal and keep the shiny side up

TW is a far more robust bike thatll take anything you throw at it. The XR is mostly intended for street use and probably won't hold up over time if you're spending a lot of time in terrain its not really meant to be on.

I have a 2015 model XR150L here in South Africa. It's been my daily rider as well as occasional adventure bike. I've fitted a one tooth smaller front sprocket which slightly improves its acceleration (revs don't drop off as much when engaging the next higher ratio) while still attaining the same top speed of 112km/h (65mph?) I get 40km/L (90mpg?) which is twice as economical as my old Honda 400 TransAlp. Besides the usual wear & tear items, i.e. tyres and disk pads, I've not spent a cent on mine and it hasn't seen a bike dealership as I do my own basic maintenance, i.e. tyres, oil changes, air filters and spark plugs. Mine's done about 24000km (15000 miles) to date and still has its original battery. I'd rate it as good as any other Honda I've ever owned, which includes an XL125, CRF230 and a 650 TransAlp. Anyone who thinks they're Chinese clones, doesn't realise that the Chinese bikes have been cloned from THESE XRs, that have been around for the last decade.

Both are great bikes, but I hate when on a review they're being trashed at max rpm, and yes it does 50 or 60 with no problem. Yeah keep riding like that for 15 or 20k and the engine dies, not because it's not good enough, but it's not what it's for. Or am I the only one, who likes to ride whatever bike at max 2/3 of it's peak power or revs? I had (and still have) underpowered bikes, and if it doesn't like to go fast, well I won't push it. So it's kinda irrelevant that it "could" do 60. What does it feel like when it's doing a comfortable 50?

I rode one once. I had only been riding for a few months at the time. It was underwhelming to say the least. It’s basically a moped trying to perpetrate a dual sport. I’m a big fan of Rado n DIrt n Iron but i gotta call bullshit when i see it. This is a bike that id recommend for a younger woman who wants a scooter for running around a city or campus, or for a teenage kid who plans to learn on this for a few months and then upgrade. If this is one of your choices for first bike i would really think hard about getting something a little more lively, like a crf/klx 250/300. I would hate to see anyone spend a few grand and then be unhappy with their purchase weeks later.

Both of these bikes suck on the road. It is what it is. Gotta call a spade a spade. These are amazing bikes as campground bikes, for the back of an RV, at the track to run errands on, on a farm or rural setting, and for slow woods riding to just enjoy life, riding, and nature. As soon as you hit the pavement the fun stops. Let's just be honest. Unless of course you are in town, stop light to stop light, 25-35 mph urban riding. Then, again, these excel. If you are trying to get to and from your favorite off road riding areas you should just look at these as a dirt bike and haul it in your truck and unload once you get there. And that is not a bad thing. You have all your tools, spare fuel, food, gear, etc..and can just ride for the afternoon in that forest system and load up and head home afterwards.

Apologies, but the XR150L is not made in Japan, but in multiple countries for different markets. TW200 is still Japan and the price reflects that. I don't think that makes tons of difference, all the XR150Ls I have seen (4-5?) have looked well made and benefit from modern styling and ergonomics, as you say. The shame is that Yamaha is unlikely to ever build a next-gen bike for this category and the best we can hope is an ongoing supply of the "same same" Tdub. I might buy an XR150L to familiarize with as I have some ideas about doing motorcycle touring in Asia, where the model is common and I would rent/buy/some-such there.

Sorry to burst bubbles, but this XR150 is built in Mexico by a Chinese company that "partners" with Honda. It nothing but a clone bike, like all the other crap out of China...There's no way its going to have the durability of a true XR. The reason why T-Dubs cost $2k more is because its a true Japanese motorcycle... Rule #1, you get what you pay for 😉

It's got the absolute worst suspension but what do you expect for 2971.00? I've got a KTM 350excf as a real dirt bike. I even commute on the freeway with it. No problem drafting cars and maintaining 65. This bike is several steps above you run of the mill Chinese bike.

Maybe I was a little harsh in my initial post, but I have a strong distain for Chinese motorcycles and I do not like this trend of major manufactures(like Honda) using Chinese facilities to manufacture or simply rebadge Chinese motorcycles to sell as their own. Its sleezy way to up profits that is ultimately going to hurt quality across the industry... Not to mention supporting an authoritarian government.....
