I'm pretty sure Morimoto openly explained his SMB3 run was tool-assisted when he originally posted it, people just reposted it everywhere without the accompanying explanation. There was no intentional dishonesty, just a combination of language barrier and being seen out of context.

I wrote an article for the September LinuxJournal.com issue where I cover that aspect in more depth. Average viewers who could not read the Japanese website that the video linked to were unaware tools had been used. It was not his fault as he couldn't possibly have predicted what was going to happen.

If you were to translate a TAS into piano notes and put the resulting "sheet music" in front of a master pianist, and then secretly hooked up the piano to the game being TASed, what would happen?

Ask us in a couple of GDQ events. I'm already planning a stunt along those lines... ;)

I think the problem is that many of these inputs would have to be frame perfect, and even a really consistent timing wouldn't be frame perfect for every input. Im sure there's ways around this, although I wouldn't know where to begin

@@AndrevusWhitetailNeedless to say it involves an out of this world musician and if our plans work out we would be aiming for AGDQ 2020. To help make this a reality please volunteer at Discord.TASBot.net even if you don't think there's anything you can do.

Timekeeping isn't something a music performer does. They keep tempo, but not time. So what'll happen is a desynchronization. No question about that.

Hey I've heard you mention the SMB3 17 frame TAS a few times but can't find any info on it through google, is there anywhere we can find info on that or is it something that was done recently with no publicly available info yet?

There are a few resources - it was first shown at SGDQ 2016, and you can find that run and all other appearances at TASBot.org or the always useful gdqvods.com/category/tool-assisted-speedruns site. For an explanation of what we did, Kyle Orland wrote a a fantastic overview at arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/07/how-to-beat-super-mario-bros-3-in-less-than-a-second/ and for a deep dive into how the controller routine we (ab)use works you can consult the thorough investigation done by Fuzyll at fuzyll.com/2016/the-smb3-input-polling-glitch

"Using a corded keyboard?" I've never heard that before. Although I certainly remember making TASes the old school claw hand way. Actually, I used to use a USB controller and press frame advance with my pinky!

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chorded_keyboard describes a few different methods but many of them work by pressing down key combinations then releasing them. The classic TAS claw is more like holding several keys (buttons) and then tapping a frame advance key and some games are way worse than others to work with using that method. I've thus also used your controller method as well. :)

Mostly because we wanted to get this live but we'd only finished editing on the first half. Also, it seems like no one wants to watch a 45 minute KZread video. I'm kinda inclined to do a third video that is even shorter for people who don't have attention spans long enough.

Heh, hey, we're all just volunteers hoping to propel a charity effort forward a bit further while having fun in the process. I don't think we're getting *too* carried away. :)
