Growing up no matter what I was into I never missed the men’s or women’s 100m race. Having the pleasure of watching bolt break the record I dam near shed tears for me and my father who has long passed. He would of loved to see bolt out there dominating the way he did. It was a tradition for my father and since his passing I’ve passed it on to my children to watch the Mens and women’s 100m races wherever they are.

Note Jesse Owens 4 gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics included the 4x100 metres relay and not the 400 metres as stated in the video.

And 14 years and still no 1 has even got a 10th of a second away.

@@Parker3Curry30 so far there have been 14 sprinters in history who ran faster than Noah Lyles' best 100 m time. Lyles didn't even break the 9.8 barrier, let alone the 9.7 and the 9.6. So he is far from coming close to the world record or goat status.

When Summoning Salt expands into reality

The key driver for the new records are the tracks. Olympic in Tokyo 1964 was the last time without a Tartan track. 1968 the first Track in Europe was installed in Zuerich Letzigrund. The timing since 1960 from Omega was possible for two digits but for 10 years only one digit was used. The shoes are now significant changed. But from a Kangaroo Leather adidas in 1968 to a Mesh Variant in 1993 the difference is not that big in weight. The advantage was the Shoe to manufacture tighter as with leather. If the Swiss would have opted for Meetings above 1500 Meter hight St Moritz for example. The records would have been smashed decades ago. The records in Mexico and Calvin Smiths one based on hight.

Good vid. Just a note at 7:12. Charlie Green's hand-timed 9.9 was in a separate race from that of Jim Hines and Ronnie Ray Smith. They were two semi-finals for the 1968 AAU champs. Green won the final later that evening.

The Gustavus Town Kirby Timing Device (GTKTD) was the first FAT device and was used originally to determine the correct order of finish in horse races in the late 1920's. In the early 1930's it was used in track and field sprint events. Ralph Metcalfe held the first 100 meter FAT world record of 10.62 (10.6 HT) at the 1932 Olympic Trials on July 16, 1932 which was broken almost 2 weeks later in the 1932 Olympic 100 meter final by both he and Olympic Gold Medalist Eddie Tolan on Aug 1, 1932 with a time of 10.38 (10.3 HT) seconds. This would remain the FAT world record until Barney Ewell broke it 15 years 11 months and 22 days later with a time of 10.35 (10.2 HT) seconds on July 9, 1948, which In turn was broken 11 years and 11 months later by Armin Hary with a time of 10.25 (10.0 HT) seconds on June 21, 1960. Hary held the FAT world record for 3 years and 7 months until Bob Hayes followed that up with his 1964 Olympic final run of 10.06 (10.0 HT) seconds on October 15, 1964. That record also lasted about 3 years and 7 months until Jim Hines ran 10.03 (9.9 HT) seconds on June 20, 1968 at the Night of Speed (NOS). Hines NOS run was the first time any sprinter clocked sub 10 seconds under any official legal timing conditions and is still the fastest that anyone has run 100 meters on a natural non-synthetic surface. It was the Sea Level WR for 12 years until James Sanford broke it in May of 1980 clocking 10.02 on UCLA's synthetic track. Officially it was the all conditions WR for about 4 months until Charlie Greene ran 10.02 (A) in the 4th quarterfinal at the 1968 Olympics on October 13, 1968. Greene's WR lasted for only 1 day as Hines ran his infamous 9.95 (A) FAT the very next day in the 100 meter final. Hines' 9.95 remained the world record for 14 years 8 months and 19 days, the longest so far in the OFFICIAL FAT era. Prior to 1977 only manual or Hand times (HT) were considered official for record purposes, Fully automatic timing (FAT) did not become mandatory for world records until 1 January 1977.

Bob Hayes actual time was 10.06 Armin Hary ran 10.25 for his 10.0.

Powell run 9.72 he is the fourth fastest man. Jamaica have the 3 fastest time ever in the 100m 9.58, 9.63 and 9.69 that is the greatest record for a tiny nation it seems the people born on that land are the greatest people on the planet.

Depends on if Knighton is planning on going into that...He seems to have the best potential at the 200m record and IF he can get that he might be able to train for the 100m, you never know.

That's the spirit! 10.72 still puts you well into the top 1% of fastest humans ever :D

Some of this progression is technology, much as it is with golf driving distances. For example, when they took into account what Jesse Owens had to endure at the 1936 Olympics: a crude cinder surface, having to dig his own hole with a little spade to provide some support for the start rather than having blocks, and the low tech of the shoes and adjusted for the technology, he came up about one pace short of Usain Bolt's 9.58. This isn't even considering the benefits he'd have derived from what we've learned about training over the last 87 years. When you consider that Owens looked like he was out for a light jog, you have to consider that the guy would've given the modern giants of the sport all they wanted and more.

If the US athletic mafia hadn't destroyed Ben Johnson, the fastest man on the planet would have done it even more than Usian Bolt.

Leaving Ben Johnson out of this discussion, regardless of drug use or not, does a disservice to the history of the event. Ben Johnson broke the mental barrier that sprinters had regarding 9.90 seconds. Once he did it with his 9.83 & 9.79 runs, many more followed over the next 25 years. Now the event has stagnated.

How fast can it go?

Remember in the early days it was 100 yards for many years before it was 100m, and yards are shorter than 100m

There was smal paradox in sprint (100m, 200m). From 1996 to 2008 the fastest men sprinter was Michael Johnson. His 200m world record 19.32 on 1st August 1996 made him fastest sprinter till Usaint Bolt 200m world record 19.30 in Beijing.

Johnson didn't run the 100m dash, so he doesn't belong in a video about the 100 m world record or the fastest 100m sprinters. If Johnson was faster in the 100 metres, then he would have competed there as well and won but he did not.

Powell? is fifth i think is still fourth, fifth gatlin. De Grasse record had air adied so its not a record.

No Ben’s record no 100m history

Why is it that 100 years ago? They’re only off by second and two tenth they don’t have as good of tracks that they had they don’t have the shoes they had. They don’t have the drugs the food with all that they’ve only gained one second and 2/10 I think we have to hold her hands up to those guys 100 years ago.

I believe bolt wr of 9.58 will stand in the next 40-50 years and maybe it is the human limit. No one could ever touch under 9.6 except the only one special man usain bolt.

If you'd have given Jesse Owens starting blocks, high tech shoes and a modern surface rather than energy-sucking cinder, experts have concluded he'd have been about one stride behind Bolt. That's not even considering the fact that Owens didn't have access to all we've learned in the last 90 years about training...and the obvious point that when he dominated the '36 Olympics 100, he looked for all the world that he was cruising and probably had another 10th lower in the tank if he'd needed to press the issue--which he didn't he was so far ahead. Not sure Bolt would beat Owens, all factors being equalized.
