My favourite steel (Aogami steel). As a carpenter I've used a lot of steels but absolutely love this steel (along with White paper steel). A fantastic little folding knife with "soul".

Also because the blade doesn’t lock and is 2.999 inches long, we can legally carry it in the UK as a utility knife for work if you open boxes or work in gardens, fishing, camping etc.

The steel used in these pocket knives is very high quality. I use it (no.2 blue paper steel) in a lot of knives I make. Certainly not for a beginner knife maker, but the edge retention is superb. Also, you can achieve a superb contrast between the softer and hard steel, making for a very pretty blade.

I recall almost every boy in Japan had this knife in the early 70s to sharpening pencils. Mechanized sharpeners were already available but that was a good lesson for the boys to learn how to use knives.

Bought this as my first ever knife. Going to use it for camping and general use. Love the info about the history and the fact that it's done by one remaining guy is incredible. I bought a Damascus bladed one and I wondered if that was traditional as it's not Japanese.

I just picked one up. Not shaving sharp, but okay for utility use. I wasn't surprised by that in a $25 knife. I expect it will respond well to the stone. Been carrying it for just a couple of days and it's already proven handy.

these knifes are usually made from Aogami, Blue Paper Steel. Name comes from the Paper the steel bars are wrapped in. For further Information ask Wikipedia about it 😉

It's made by Hitachi and is basically white paper steel (again made by Hitachi and named after the paper its packaged in). A very pure carbon steel with added chromium and tungsten. It has a high carbon content 1.4-1.5%.

Japanese knives or swords aren’t sharpened or polished by the smiths as a tradition or custom. It would be considered rude to sharpen the knife for you as it is going to be used by the recipient and not the smith. That’s why it doesn’t come razorsharp out of the box.

I would prefer if the blade was a bit thinner for slicing. But it has the same vibe as the svord peasent knife from New Zealand.

Wilson’s Wild - I must say, although I don’t like this knife, you did a good job as a reviewer! That being said, I think it’s only fair to also share my own opinions/experiences with this knife as well. Like you, I found two things very alluring about this knife when I first decided to pull the trigger and purchase one. First, I really liked the fact that this little knife was steeped in tradition and had a long history/story behind it. Second, I really liked the fact that for such an inexpensive knife, you are getting a wonderful quality steel. After you get past the two aforementioned positive aspects of this knife, I found that it’s really all downhill from there. First, like you mentioned in this video, these knives don’t always arrive to the owner sharp out of the box. I happen to sharpen knives and other instruments professionally, so this is not a problem for me at all, however the reason I bring this point up is because it relates to a larger issue; the fact that the quality of these knives out of box varies wildly! Aside from often not being sharp out of the box, after owning more than 8 of these knives, I’ve also come to find that the pivot tension of the knives also varied wildly from knife to knife. While some knives had a nice tight tension, other knives arrived new-in-box with blades that would literally flop around allowing the blade to flop open if the knife were even held upside down (no flicking movement or anything). This is not only a poor representation on the knife maker as a statement of his pride in quality control and craftsmanship, but also makes this knife extremely dangerous and not something I would want to carry in a pocket, or really even want to use at all. Furthermore, even knives that arrived with a pivot that was nice and tight would often soon loosen and quickly become floppy and dangerous. This sucks because the user is unable to easily tighten the pivot because it’s peened in place. I’ve even tried tightening it with a hammer only to realize that any attempt was fruitless and only resulted in deforming the rounded portion of the pivot pin. Ultimately, if you step back and look at this knife objectively dismissing the tradition and story associated with it, and simply look at it as a utilitarian tool, the knife is a truly a janky piece of garbage! The knife often arrives dull, the pivot tension varies wildly, the handle is uncomfortable as hell, and the blade smashes against the inside of the handle when you close the knife, blunting the cutting edge because there is no stop pin! Furthermore, I would NEVER feel safe about carrying this knife in a pocket for fear that it would open and either cut my leg when sitting, or cut my hand when reaching in the pocket. So I guess I just simply don’t understand everyone’s high praise for this junky knife. I think everyone’s being blinded by the fluff story that comes along with this knife, and they completely overlook the poor design and piss poor performance and safety issues.

Hey great question! It's because I purchased them all at once. They came in sets of three. I bought a set of three with silver handles and another set of three with the brass handles as well as a special edition with black anodized handle and a forged finish blade. Then once I realized how crappy of a knife they all were, I quickly sold them all.

The sets are fine. They are authentic. They are just shoddy. The knife design itself is junk. Sorry. Don't mean to offend, but it's true. It's just a garbage knife.

I agree. The metal, if sharpened the correct way, can get scary sharp. I know a guy who bought one of these and sharpened it the same way he would his buck knives. I told him they had a different edge and requires a different technique. He didn't listen and ruined the edge after awhile. Thus, in his mind, the blade was junk. Some people are just hard headed. I have one of these and my complaints are the same as yours. I tried cutting a sappling, and while it did cut it with ease, the handle was uncomfortable as hell. The pivots on mine were tight but loosened up in no time. But I do love the metal. I just wish it was made in a fixed blade variant to bypass the pivot and uncomfortable handle issues

No, it's not. It's entirely different. This is more than likely production laminated steel. I don't which one they use, there is white paper #1, and #2, blue paper #1, #2, and super blue, made by Hitachi. I've been trying to get hold of super blue, but they don't like selling to Americans.

These are wonderful little knives - the handle is blued then coated steel, the reason the blade may be a little dull is because the curved blade touches the inside of the steel handle, dulling the edge slightly when closed

They are really cool knifes but I recently purchased one and unfortunately the handle is quite uncomfortable to hold as the thin metal at the opening feels like they are about to cut you. This knife is also extremely small for average people hands. Knife also doesn’t lock into place

sharpness is less material in an edge, so its bound to be a balance between durability and sharpness, hardness and flexibility, thats why old katanas are still top metalcraft objects, they reached such a balance that we still cannot reach with modern machinery...
