Higo No Kami Knife Review. A $20 hand made friction folder from Japan

The Higo No Kami is about as budget of a hand made knife you can buy. Reportedly these are all hand made by one knife maker in Japan. The Higonokami friction folding blade traces it's roots back to 1896, and it seems to be made in the same traditional way. My review covers the basics of this classic pocket knife. So I hope you can watch it.

    The legend of one very old man making these knives is a myth. There is a pdf called Higonokami Knife by Dr. Rudolf Dick (not kidding) that shows the 3 families and the process of making the knife. This knife is my favorite folder. It's not modern or a workhorse of blade, it just has that imagery of a blade master making knives in the tradition of his great grandfather. Love your channel, you can love knives without getting too serious about it. If you can baton with a folder, you can be pretty sure that it's a well-made knife.

    Just picked a couple of knives made by Aritsugu in Kyoto in the Higo no Kami style. The blades are no joke on these things! Highly suggest the Aritsugu variant if you can find it. They've been making sharp things out of steel since the 16th century. You don't last that long for nothing.

    From what I heard it keeps sharpness longer then normal steel but is harder to sharpen. And it's basically a knife from the mid 1800s for work people that need a good reliable knife all the money went into the steel of the blade most of the time the high carbon steel is folded about 3 times and often even combines softer and harder steels. Also most children had them in school for sharpening pencils and karving. Edit: it is the most value for your money you can get. A high end, we'll crafted and sharpened blade for around 15-20$

    All the boys in Japan who always carried”肥後守” Higonokami in their pockets when they were children are now old men.When you put it in your pocket, you have to secure the blade and handle with a rubber band.The blade was sharpened on granite in the school sink.Children these days are not allowed to carry knives because it is dangerous. Therefore, children in the land of swords cannot learn to use knives safely. It's sad.

    Hitachi I believe is the company that makes the steel. Either way "blue steel" or "blue paper steel" refers to the literal paper wrapping the steel comes in. Same with Japanese "white steel" or "white paper steel." This blue steel should be the same as the blue steel Spyderco has used in sprints on some of their Japanese made knives.

  • @marshalllaw123

    @marshalllaw123

    6 жыл бұрын

    Silent Thunder Ordnance pretty sure that's not correct. Super Blue, which spyderco has used in sprint runs, is a stainless modern super steel. The "blue paper" steel is non-stainless carbon steel.

  • @silentthunderordnance1655

    @silentthunderordnance1655

    6 жыл бұрын

    Actually Spyderco's "super blue" is not a stainless steel and, by looking at it's composition which you can find on Spyderco's website, you'd have to have a pretty generous definition of "super steel" to include it in that category as well. 1.40-1.50% carbon, 0.30-0.50% chromium, few other alloys at less than .5%. Only thing that really jumps out is 2.00-2.50% tungsten. It looks like a recipe for a really great simple carbon blade steel which is a step up from your basic white steel that has very similar composition minus the chromium and tungsten IIRC. Don't take my word for it though, look it up on Spyderco's website.

    1:36 Had me laughing off my ass initially, come on, kinda true if you think about it! But I really liked the review and will come back for more, nice job. May just pick one up as a nice traditional piece for the collection.

    I think it would be easy to make a better one at a home forge. The thing I dislike about brass cases is the smell of it on your hands after holding it. This particular knife blade looks fairly poorly finished/hammered. Mass produced crap we love..overall aesthetically pleasing but low quality...similar to the douk douk, but that one has a spring..

    @@shawnpatrick1877 Well any knife blade can be made "exceptionally sharp and good for work". LOL! And that may well "be one of the most ignorant things I've ever read" too. The one I was gifted WAS sharp and held an edge (just like many many knives can do-I know, astonishing!), but the rivet eventually loosed up, and the brass handle bent when I attempted to tighten it; also the thumb hold developed a crack at the base after normal use of a couple years...Gosh, maybe I just got a bad one?

    I picked up one of these a number of years ago from lee valley. They sold it as a carving knife. It is not durable enough for an every day pocket knife (atleast mine is not) I love carbon steel knives like my mora but I have come to the conclusion that a dailey beater should be stainles and doulble bevel. I do like the price point and just looking at it sharpens it to a razor. I buy alot of knives for under $100 and for $20 There are almost no knives you can get as sharp. (Accept again mora lol)
