The Righteous Brothers had a big hit with "Unchained Melody" in 1965. Home Free did such a beautiful rendition of this classic song. The video in prison is very fitting as this song was originally written for the 1955 prison film "Unchained". The film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or finishing his sentence and returning to his wife & family. The song focuses on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time".

This is NAGNIFICIENT!! IT is an absolute MASTERPIECE!!! HOME FREE took their arraignment all of the way back to the original THEME SONG IN THE ORIGINAL MOVIE!!! And, I am so glad they did. In the movie, that takes place in the late 1940's or early 1950's, a man is in prison and seperated from his wife...his love! He is writing her to tell her he may be gone for a very long time or eternally! It is so SAD and he is truelly grieving. The black and white film, the prison scene, the old typewriter, and that glorious sound of TIM FOUST takes us back to that "UNCHAINED" movie. Tim was sheer perfection! He was so wonderful and then Austin picks the song up after Tim has set it up! Austin was phenomenol, as always. These two guys were perfect for this song. It needed Tim to bring that depth of despair that the song calls for! And, man did he takes us there. I feel sad, lonely, and sick, missing my love because Tim did takes my feelings to that level. No other version has ever captured or even understood what the song required. Thank you, Tim and Austin for this beautiful rendition of "UNCHAINED MELODY". This is my favorite version of it now! Also, thank you for covering and reacting to HOME FREE! US, HOME FRIES, REALLY APPRECIATE IT!

the original song was written for a 1955 movie "Unchained" which was about a prisoner debating whether to escape or serve his time and eventually get to go back to his wife and family. The movie didn't do very well in the box office but the song was nominated for an academy award. I read on someone's comment that the arranger was Tim but I'm never sure if comments are correct.

Especially loved that lead up from Adam Rupp to Austin's high note, he has such a knack for bringing in what's needed without ever going overboard. Sometimes simple and basic is the hardest to do well. There is not a bunch of background to cover slips. When you are hanging out in the open and do it this well, it shows virtuosity cleanly. You are right simple does not mean boring! BTW give Ella a scratch or two from me. She seems like such a loving girl, you are blessed to have such a gentle companion for you and your wife to share.

I’m really surprised at you, Mortius. I expected you to say something about the bell tones in the background when Austin’s solo started, especially the way they went ”da da da” downward on the first line and “da da da da da” down and up on the second. Then you paused it right there and said you don’t have much to say.

If it was arranged by anyone but their producer Darren Rust, they would credit them.

Then I wish they would credit Darren Rust every time. Just seems like an obvious thing that shouldn't be left out. Mortius isn't the only nerd that stops a song to read the credits when they are impressed by an arrangement.

@@sarahereach Anyone, Home Free has ever left uncredited has been that person's choice and not the group's. Normally, they find a way to give the people credit in interviews eventually anyways, but I think in Darren's case, since Chris left the band, so few arrangements have been done by anyone else that it's just repetitive to constantly list Darren Rust as the vocal arranger.

  • @sarahereach

Fair enough I suppose, leaving people uncredited is just a pet peeve of mine (If that is an artists choice, that is different) In the case of if being repetitive, I personally think it is worth the space to do anyway, and people like me and Mortius are prime examples why. Not everyone is enough of a Home Fry to know who their regular arranger is. I definitely do appreciate those with the knowledge filling us in though.

You should dip your toes into the metal world. For pure vocal reasons I'd say start with Iron Maiden. Then do the Big 4, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeath and Anthrax.

Personally I don't see the reason for turning the song into yet another opportunity for Tim to sing doo-wop. The essential character of the song seemed to be in danger of being submerged. I have listened multiple times in the hope of liking it but apart from some pretty bell notes, it feels over-arranged. The video as video is amazing, however. Try listening to Austin's version, dropped on his channel about a year ago. It's just Austin sitting at home with his long time musical partner Steven Martinez on guitar. Simple and stunning.
