SMART has been for me what AA/NA have not. Not to knock them for those it works for; but, without SMART I would have remained hopeless on group and social recovery groups.

How long does a recovery take in Smart? Bunch of us recovered quickly with original AA , but we had to separate the program from what was told in meetings.

My top value is health… financial, physical, relationships, emotional…. Using that one word helps me make fast decisions… if I feel an urge to overspend, I can immediately think “does this help me meet my financial goals?” Or when feeling an urge to drink… “Will this damage my physical health? Cause my relationships to suffer harm?” It’s a very simple idea and can help me make fast decisions… MOST of the time. 😶

I love that Ginger!! Health is also one of my top values and I also see it in a comprehensive, all-around way like that. Have you seen the 8 dimensions of wellness model? Some great graphics availble of it online. But it shows the 8 aspects of health: physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, environmental, social, occupational, financial. I hope your recovery is going well!! Also I’d recommend checking out Functional Inagery Training (FIT) by Linda Solbrig if you can. It teaches genius techniques like the “Cravings-Buster” (which you can find shown in a KZread video on here) which makes handling cravings and making the healthy choice FAR easier.

So appreciative for these videos. Am pushing 40yo, struggling with addiction and depression and binge eating, as I have since adolescence. At the point with alcohol where I feel on the cusp of no return. Drinking gallons of wine a week, GI problems, starting to develop true physical dependence. Have heard SMART recovery referenced on r/stopdrinking (which has been useful for social support and some tools such as HALT- are you Hungry Angry Lonely Tired?) In 2020 I white-knuckled thru an entire year of no booze, aside from a single blackout day-drinking sesh that landed me in ER with a busted up face via bike crash that could have killed or paralyzed me. How did I "celebrate" my first year sans booze? Drank a bottle of wine! couple days later, 2. And now I routinely drink 4 if I start, and drink more and more days. Something has to change! Starting to work my way thru the website, and these youtube videos. I need to address WHY my knee-jerk reaction is to get blacked out when I'm feeling the HALT feelings. I need to train my brain to deconstruct the automaton reach for a carcinogenic poison. I'm cautiously optimistic because people in recovery I respect have hailed SMART as effective when AA and other modalities weren't. And because I've toyed with and appreciate the power of CBT for years, but have never prioritized the time/effort to IMPLEMENT tools to re-wire my noggin for my TRUE values. I don't want myself or anyone else to feel defeated and like they'll always be a dis-eased, fragile wreck enslaved to scarcely resistable impulses. I want to slowly but surely build strength and resiliency, through intelligent effort Values: My wonderful, much loved teen kid. My imperfect but good-intentioned extended family. A handful of friendships (which I've been neglecting, to drink myself stupid, alone.) Living honestly and simply and appreciating the natural world's flora/fauna/ecosystems. Musical expression. Kindness. True humour and consistent creativity. None of these are compatible with the short-term FALSE euphoria or anxiety/stress dampening that alcohol provides. It hasn't FIXED a single damn thing yet, it's absurd to think it ever will. And the cognitive/social/emotional/physical effects are escalating. Ramble-bramble, heh. Anyways, waiting on my paper copy of the handbook, but starting to bookmark and work thru the tools and exercises. Hoping for the best, for myself, and anyone reading this. We are perhaps more powerful than we have previously believed :)

This is SO POWERFUL! I know I can speak for myself that while my behavior may align with some values (i.e. my health, relationships, etc) I never explicitly recognized them and how my actions may or may not be prioritized or aligned with my values. Clarity is key! Thank you so much for the great content.

The Hierarchy of Values was an indispensable tool in my recovery from addiction! It takes a natural process and applies it as an intentional tool to make it more effective. Every time I attempted recovery I had a sporadic dialogue about what was important to me. Common sense told me that this should be the source of change but it was ineffective. One day in a work training we did a values exercise and it got me thinking about this in a more deliberate way. I realized that I had a set of illicit values that sustained my addiction. I also learned that I had a conflict of illicit values versus sensible values. Later I learned to do a cost versus benefit analysis of these. That's another indispensable tool! Today I use sensible values to sustain my recovery!

Spirituality is another value. One’s soul and it’s experience of God and the prospect of eternal life. It’s not illegal. It’s ok to talk about it.

Love it. However there's a grammar mistake in the title. Tips and Tools is plural so it should read Tips and Tools that WORK not works. If it were singular like Tool then you'd say a Tool that works. With grammar errors, some people who need this might not take it seriously. Otherwise...I'll be attending meetings in the LA area soon.

Very helpful! I do take exception a man that would feel pressure to follow society’s expectations and marry his high school sweetheart. Our society is now drenched in fact that it’s OK to marry any person you want regardless of race, gender, or anything else. In my opinion, the first constructive step for a marriage that is not problematic is to talk with the marriage counselor. The problem with the marriage may not be what you think it is. Get professional help for your marriage before you end it. Especially if you have children. Divorce is very harmful to children in the household and has lasting negative effects for the children throughout their lives. I would give the marriage counselor advice to my heterosexual friends, and also my homosexual friends.

While society as a whole in the US certainly is in favor of marriage equality, many lgbt people still face intense difficulties with their families. I came out at 15 years old in 1996 - overall it is certainly easier to come out now, but everyone's situation is different. Particularly when religious beliefs are involved, many families still expect their children to be heterosexual and refuse to accept anything outside of their wishes. I volunteer for The Trevor Project and speak with lgbt teens - they are still struggling in many ways.
