The Hidden Questline in Ghost of Tsushima (A Family's Escape)
Among the typical side quests you might find in Ghost of Tsushima, there is one story that won't prompt you with any notification or any visible markers on how to continue it. This is that questline, a story about "a family's escape."

What if the family died first, then toku found they're body's, and committed suicide, considering she's below a cliff. It's like toku had found all the other notes, but only Jin found the last one, and they're tragedy.

If you want to find out what happened to Toku, go to the area south of the Komoda Lighthouse at Saicho's Point. In the abandoned camp area where the first attack against the Mongols was launched over looking Komoda Beach, you can find a record titled "What happened in Komoda". The author isn't most articulate person, but they were desperate to find Toku as well.

For real side quests are depressing. One guy sends you to find someone else, that someone else is dead. If that someone else isnt dead, the guy that sent you is once you come back to him. Its kinda boring tbh they all end same way 😂

There is a quest called bloodletting you may wanna do that for a change
I love this video and the quest. Following a bread crumb trail is a much more unique way of doing a quest but I feel like it would get a little annoying/tedious if the whole game was based around quests like this. This style of video was really engaging and fun I hope you can do some like this in the future.
Stories like these in the game really tell how it was like to be in the invasion, trying to survive against a nearly unstoppable force. Families dead, dying to missing. It builds the world of Tsushima more as the real place it is.
A bold experiment that really paid off - on the part of the developers, but also you JM. This channel is always full of pleasant surprises. Keep up the stellar work!

I wanna say thank you for making this video. I searched “A Family’s Escape “ because much like many other people it constantly had a red icon on it as if I never read it no matter how many times I had. You really helped make this awesome game more enjoyable for me and the way you made this video and your narration was really great. I was more immersed into the story with the way you told it. I hope you have more as I’m going to search for the rest of the Key Items for more. A Family’s Escape is now gone from Key Items menu so that’s one down. Thanks again.
I'm wondering why you don't have a whole channel of these. What a perfect way to explore the art of environmental storytelling! Great narrating, great editing, great overall presentation. Keep it up!
Much of video game convention focuses on making sure that the player is guaranteed to find their way along the path. Waypoints, explanatory text boxes, quest logs, map markers, etc. The designers went to a great deal of effort to create the content, so damned if they're going to let the player miss it. It takes real courage to create a quest with nothing mechanical guiding the way. To create content that many players - especially ones used to being guided by the hand - may never follow through on. May never even realize is a quest they CAN investigate. It takes guts to create a story that many players will never know. Let alone to leave the conclusion thoroughly open and ambiguous. It's not too dissimilar to Dark Souls. Where plot points, lore, and character motivations are obscured behind fragments of text and environmental storytelling.

My guess is that 99% of players would never bother to follow up on the first note, not just because we're used to being hand-led through games, but because there's no real guarantee there's anything at to find. Games like this are gigantic, with dozens of quests clearly laid out for us to invest time in, so the idea of screwing around looking to see if this note leads to anything at all isn't all that tempting for most of us. But here's the thing. I think it'd be really interesting for a game to make this the main technique of exploration, and they could do it by forcing the player to learn it in order to progress, just like any other game mechanic. Two or three simple tutorial quests could teach the player how to zero in on the right clues, and now to interpret them. Then, the clues could slowly increase in complexity and obscurity over the course of the game. Of course, that becomes a whole game mechanic in itself, and a mechanic like this would severely affect the pacing of a game. The player would have to be prepared to be stuck until they puzzled out the clues. I find with a lot of tutorials, I don't retain all the information, so I often get a little stuck until I relearn a few key mechanics. So the game would have to have ways to remind you what characters said, what notes said, reading maps and sign posts, etc, and how to sort through that information for the vital clues. But I think that would be a lot if fun. I always think less hud clutter and more immersion is better in these kinds of games. That's why I loved the guiding wind so much.

Agreed I’m playing the Witcher 3 and all too often I am glued to the minimap, which is horrible considering what type of game it was meant to be I would much rather be limited in my resources and have to navigate by landmarks and knowledge already available to me, it would make every excursion a really cool puzzle

That only works with worlds relatively sizable if were talking skyrim or something that big youre gonna get lost fast. Ive played some games where i was given no help (no handholding) and half the time i have to look up guides on where to go after wandering around aimless for a good hour or so, i can agree there should be MORE hidden quests, but not the whole game. Cause again unless the map is recognisable to a semblance of space, youll get lost fast

I’ve kept stumbling upon these notes and I’ve wondered about them, not entirely sure about their connections. Glad to see that someone managed to piece the puzzle together, and now I’ll know to follow this path in remembrance of these lost souls. However, I thought at first this connected to a small area found below one of the shrines, I can’t remember where but it was by the coast line possibly to the East, and I remember every time I accidentally fell there was a camp with bodies around it. The reason I thought this was connected was by Jin being able to interact with the bodies and say something about a family trying to leave the island. I’m not sure if there are more of these unidentified quests, but sure enough they do seem quite the mystery.
Man. Not gonna lie,. forgot about this quest. Pretty cool to see such a well crafted video about it like this.

I always loved this little quest. There are other small hidden quests that don't count towards 100% so one never knows if you do find them all or not. There is one with a monk burning bodies by a watchtower, there is another about a woman trying to fool you into killing you.

This is genuinely a fantastic video. I was watching this with heavy eyelids as it rained just outside the window beside me. The mood was perfect. And though this is a heartbreaking story, I am at peace. Thank you for the story.
I don’t know if this is intended, but whenever you complete a quest, or liberate an outpost, the note is marked as unread, as if the game wants you to figure this out.
FANTASTIC video. keep doing them. I really enjoyed the thought u put into this one single hidden mission. the thought put into this is amazing. this is how the game is meant too be analyzed and appreciated
I really like this type of video style, it reminds me of camel works, a Skyrim channel that delves deep into the curiosities of obscure quests and areas. Nice video jm
I had found the letters on the cliff first, actually, out of pure exploration. The way the war touches the civilians is made obvious in a very subtle way... Love this game.
So that’s why the red mark on the top left of the records repeatedly popped up after I went through it over and over again. I didn’t knew the *family’s escape* had a hidden quest line! I thought at first it was some glitch. I know it’s a year late but thank you for this. Now I must prepare for the hunt…

Important side note actually. IF you bow at the man sitting punctured by arrows against the rock Jin will say "Go to your Reward" . Gave me chills. And honestly when i was exploring i had gotten this one 3rd on accident and After the first two just kept showing up red in my inventory even after i opened it multiple times it got so annoying had to finish the quest lol. Interesting how in yours Jin said i hope you find peace. Mine Jin didn't say anything until i bowed at the man.

I think Toku is dead… I found a note by the battlefield just outside of the Furuta Village. If you follow the path you will see a gruesome sight. I looked around and found a record. It says “What happened in Komoda”. It list the days of what this person went through, on the last day it said “ Found Toku today. Bury Toku by her favorite waterfall.” ( I was just exploring the island cause I already liberated it)

Hey, I just wanted to say I really enjoyed this video. I was honestly just expecting a standard tutorial of how to get the quest done, but instead you blew it out of the water with the presentation. Excellent job!
Wow this explains those notes ! I found all these notes by just exploring the island ! Bud thought they were just lore ! And didn’t know they actually could be followed ! I found them cause I love to explorer everything and rode around the islands multiple times just to have more enemies to fight as I did not want to run outta content ! Upon my exploration o found these notes but did not piece together what you have done here ! It finally explained those notes to me as I did not think there was anything else to them ! And I got the platinum on this game and never knew this was intended to be a secret mission ! What a great video ! U pieces together something that i just simply overlooked as added lore for the reading ! Great work and such a great video ! I’m glad I watched it ! 🙌👍
I don't if there's a connection or not, but the name Toku comes up again in Ghost of Tsushima. In the Legends mode, the final chapter of Iyo. Spoiler Alert: . . . . . . . . . . When you defeat Iyo, these are her last words, "Toku, I'm sorry." Won't spoil anything else of Iyo's story, but Gyozen, the legends storyteller mentions after you defeat Iyo, something like that the Ghosts proved no one could defeat them in all realms, but some did try and that is a tale for another time. This makes me wonder if Toku might come back as a Legend antagonist in the future.
You narrated that story so well it kept my interest right through. I'd have gone searching for it if at the end there was some special reward.
I came here just do this quest but I was baffled on how you delivered such a story. Making me see the importance of these small stories and how such families get affect by the mongol invasion. Loved the storytelling!
I currently play the game "backwards", after rushing just to the mainstory, I complete the islands from north to south. And some notes just gave chills mentioning "safe places" you happen to travel later in the game. Or you just remember passing through after the events. Or you just realise who is writing to whom. Also there are a lot of different dialogues when you completed the main story and do all the side missions afterwards.
i can’t find it in my collections, it’s only showing 2 of the notes, but i swear to god i remember finding one more note that isn’t mentioned in this video??? it was on an island i had to swim to, right at the top and it said about how the boat came and they’d left supplies for Toku because they had to go without them. you could collect the supplies. i remember it vividly because that’s when i realized that all the notes came together to tell a story. it’s not in my key items though🤨

Thank you for this video and helping bringing closure to this story.
I had some trouble with this one because every time I booted up the game, A Family's Escape would appear unread in the Key Items. I searched all over Kuta Farm and found nothing. Completing the Side Tale now, I'm really happy I was finally able to see it.
I never realized this was a quest! 😅 I thought it was just to set the mood about how desperate families were during the invasion
I remember doing this mission completely out of order! I first found the beach note and the banner, completely did not see the dead family on the cliff but saw the dead girl on trail up to the pillar, found the pillar and killed some mongols, and was so confused. Glad I found this vid
Man I found the 3rd note first by coincidence and was so confused as to what it was doing as a key item…thanks for this video
wait for those who played legends mode tale of iyo in chapter 3 it was a boss fight but as soon as you defeated her she said a line "Toku Im Sorry" while she was screaming could maybe this be iyo's family maybe I'm not sure but it seems to deepen the story of the family.
Such an amazing and well done video. Great job
A nice change up! Keep experimenting JM, I think you could make some solid stuff when you do what you want 😄

I found a random record stating a little toku was buried. Toku was child that did not survive the invasion.
I was wondering why this item in particular was always marked with the red “unread” symbol every time I opened the menu, no matter how often I went over it. I thought it was a bug or a glitch, but I guess the game always wanted to point this hidden questline out…
I found all these letters by chance and I had no idea what was going on... very interesting... thanks for that
idk anything about ghost of tsushima, but your narration kept me watching the entire video. id reccomend you do something like this with some specific darksouls story, itd be interesting and garner a lot of views
Great video! You really honor this games lore and unmarkable side quests!
I found 2 of their records and actually ended up finding the cliff by the sea where all their supplies were. This video definitely filled in some blanks
I coincidentally stumbled across one of these family escape notes, and I thought it was a rather annoying glitch whereby the red mark on key items wouldn't go away. I'm glad I looked into this further as it lead me to this video. Fantastic content, you can really see the amount of effort put into it. Thank you!
i just complete the main quest but there are so many side quest and mystery to solve in make this great really unique
As long as you stumble upon them in order it’s good. I found the last one first and had no idea where to go.
I’m usually drawn to quick to the point get it done type of videos I looked this up bc I came across the note at the pillar of honor and this video is funny but awesome. Funny because bro made this like a documentary super in depth but I love it😂❤🙏🏽
Really good narration it’s cool that you narrated the story
Personally, I feel the bodies on the camp above the beach, and the others at the top of the cliff, were other families that knew of this boat. The father is presumed Samurai, so it stands to reason he would have at least known of other families if not had other families under his charge. The mass grave and the small camp above the beach, I believe, were some of these families that were simply too late. With the mongols on their heels, each group was slaughtered with the final group, the beach camp, slain as they rested. For all we know, the father looked back to the beach from the boat and watched as the mongols killed the three on the rocks. Brilliant story telling
The 3rd note makes reference to two ways to get to the beach. By way of the dangerous cliffs and the safer path by the waterfall. If you go back north along the cliff side you will see a way down to the beach that leads you to a second supply cache. Double rewards for trying both ways suggested.
I love how he tells stories out of video games
Dude awesome video! Felt like I was watching an old noire detective film.
Explored this twice... It made me realize this game is certainly worth freeroaming.
if im not mistaken, the quest line continues in toyotama, where you can find several notes leading to a shrine, where the notes there mention the father dying of illness, but that’s as far as i got. cool video though, 10/10
This is quite horrifying. Captured the brutality of the invasion on the small folk and enforces why Jin had to do whatever it took to stop them
You can find a similar quest under the white tree at shigehori peak I think
Damn this was well done! And here I thought I paid close attention
this is might be the best story narrator I heard
I found a note about someone running away on a nearby mountain, but I am not sure that note is related to this quest, I will check it out later.
while doing a side mission about a man thinking there where samurai spirts haunting the forest i found a little house with a few scrolls, i forgot what they were about but the scrols were called a familys escape. maybe they were connected

You did an amazing job with this. I thanks you.
Love the noir detective style narration haha golden
Amazing video maybe we can find out more about in the future dead or not would love a DLC to go to mainland
a very sad tale...rest in peace toku's family :(
I don’t know if it’s connected as you said we can only speculate, however in records, there is a note someone wrote who was looking for a “Toku”. The note is called “What happened at Komoda”. The writer waited and looked for her and found her… her corpse… After that they lost hope, they ended up burying her next to her favourite waterfall before taking their own life, so much sadness so much senseless violence.
You just earned a subscriber bro brilliant video man 👍
Found the note of the family leaving. Didn't even see the others, but it stuck with me. I wondered what happen to that family cause I found bodies on the cliff and idk if toku ever made it
Every damn story ends in tragedy and its hard to take after the 15th npc u try to help then they are killed anyway. The entire story is brutal and sad but really good 👍
I always wondered why this items always displays as not readed when you open the key items screen
I’m in new game + right now, so I can’t say which one. But I remember I found a note on Tsushima talking about some Toku’s demise.
The Sashimo banner on the beach is the same as the banners waving at an outpost to the right of Wander’s Pass and just below Kukai’s Falls. It’s the outpost you venture to with Ruzo to free his men before act 2. It doesn’t look like there are any clues at that outpost tho.
theres a few quests like this where no markers or in game details of any kind list where to go or what to do
I found the boat where they died. prior to finding the notes. I sort of just walkes/ran around to open areas of the map prior to playing the main story so I could just fast travel for the most part
I first found the sister's note on the beach near the sashimoto banner saying they tried to stall the boat and left supplies for Toku. Then I found another note up the cliff guessing I should've found that one first.
I had found the final letters, starting with the waterfall, so I cannot believe i missed all of this.
I am in act 2 and ever since act 1, this always pops up in my collection with a red highlight, I then want to the the village mentioned in the letter and found nothing, let me see how this video plays out.
this really cool. reminds me of kingdom quests design.
I only ever found the first and 3rd note i think. Thank you ❤
These are not all the notes. I found a note at Arrow Peak Shrine after the broken bridge
