Mad old books that I've never heard of! This is the stuff I'm here for. Seems crazy to see you setting out medieval charters on the tables of the corpy library while there's biddies in the background furtively slipping big print Gilly Coopers into their bags. Loved this video, great work lad.

A'reyt Bruce. I was always proud of the idea that my city was built up by its people and opposed the King in the Civil War, as we English refer to it. I do envy though the way you can still point to your traditions. The city of my youth is unrecognisable in places and I saw a video tour of it showing much of the centre is dying with empty shops.

I wish I had found your videos before I visited Scotland last August, but I am enjoying them now.

A lovely personal touch to this one Bruce, but you’re quite passionate about your subject anyway 😀👍

Watching from Western Australia. From Perth. The big Perth. @2:30 you describe Perth and its position on the river. The river’s size. It’s exactly as WA Perth is/was the furthest they could get a boat up the river. Huge expanse of water. Etc. Your statement about Scottish Perth made me realise where the inspiration for the name of our WA settlement came from.

You tell a good story, Bruce! I passed Perth on the way up from North Yorkshire, and again on the way down from the North West Coast, last week. 19C in January in Ullapool but a monstrous wind last weekend. I've been to Perth many times in the past, camped at Scone Palace, enjoyed visiting my wife's - born in Bridge of Allan - summer holiday place (where Granny & Grandpa lived in Arbroath. What an Abbey & what History) as well as other places. But, pausing only to praise Ullapool and Dingwall, I thought I'd end by telling you that me and my friends in our local pub in North Yorkshire agree - Dundee is the Stockton-on-Tees of Scotland.

You missed out Peebles as an early Davidian burgh. As part of his Cumbrian fiefdom it was likely a burgh before 1124, along with Berwick and Roxburgh.

Fantastic video! I didn't realize the Perth library had medieval documents. I'm confused about your comments at the 4:10 mark. You say Robert II in 1443, however, Robert ruled from 1371 - 1390. Did you mean David II and 1343 (David was king in that year) or James II (who was king in 1443)? Otherwise, fantastic vid as always!

Oooft, I'll be honest I can't remember now. I know the charter were Robert II and Robert III. I cna't remember what I said about them now. More likely just got the date wrong

@ScotlandHistoryTours unfortunately i live in Derby these days. Not only that but my other half is having a knee replacement so travelling is going to be curtailed. When you're back from your North American tour and have another in the UK I'll make sure we can get to at least one. I have a brother in Fife so a combined visit isn't out of the question.

Fascinating topic, sennachie. Very few people take the time to look at the underlayers of a society. And how those in the underlayer play very important roles in the evolution of a nation. The merchant class has played a significant role in every nation. Without them, very little would be accomplished, yes? Weel done.

Well done, that was something I sort of knew about but not quite if you know what I mean. There are sides to towns and cities we never knew. It was as they say. The difference between us and them. The traditional way and the modern way. Just shows how much it is out of date when its was only the end of 2023. That woman became part of the guild. I wonder if there are some that dose not even have women yet. Thanks again Bruce for opening up our history and parts that still function today.

Hi again Bruce. Such a proud tradition handed down through the generations. My Father in Law was a freeman of Berwick but neither he nor any of his brothers produced a male heir. It now transpires that my wife may be able to take up the reins and hand them to our Son who is a Stewart through his maternal grandmother 🌞

Well heck and darn, I was not able to understand any of the with the 4 burgesses. Even though I had closed captioning on it didn't show any of the conversation. The sound was really bad and about the only thing I believe I heard was that it wasn't until 2023 that women could hold the office. I'd be interested in knowing how many burgesses there were. Did it depend on the size of the town or the number of guilds. I feel I lost a lot of this and am really sorry. Very interesting episode.

By way of comparison: The struggle between the high guilds and other towns people takes place over an extended period in Florence, culminating in Savonarola's theocratic regime in the 1480.s. It was a cross between a democratic revolution establishing the supremacy of an elected council, a religious reformation As early as 1378 the lower guilds and labours had rebelled in the Ciompi revolt, and established a revolutionary commune. The Medici had gained hegemony within the high guild oligarchy, but cunningly preserved the façade of the Republic. A process we are now, only too familiar with, in our current shamocracy.

Ha! I need subtitles for this one, when you and the modern burgesses are talking in Perthese! Even the closed captions gave up! A really enlightening episode, nonetheless.

There are some Royal Burghs in the Highlands, Tain for sure, maybe Elgin. Don’t think Inverness was. Possibly Nairn though.

I believe St Johnston became Perth in the 1600s. At roughly the same time, St Johnston was founded in Donegal by Scots Settlers. I am a Donegal man descended from some of these Scots Settlers.

Puzzled / Troubled by something. On the front of the pews in different areas are a gold and brown Double-Headed Eagle. This is a symbol of Russia pulled from Byzantium. I was surprised to see them here. Can you say anything about the history of these Double-Headed eagles in Perth?

🤔I don't think they're quite the same thing though

I am wondering if you have ever looked at trans Atlantic Scottish families. I don't mean Scottish people who moved to the new world but families that moved back and forth. In the 18th century it seems to have been very big between the Caribbean and the highlands as well as the southern colonies at least until the American revolution. Maybe it is only people of a particular economic status but it seems like something that is missed. Some of these people may have even identified as being from the place in Scotland of their families but were actually born in the America or the Caribbean.
