Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Dear Bruce, my husband and I love your channel and watch pretty much every video that you publish. You are an important reason why we plan to travel to Scotland one day. Secondly, from circa 2000 to 2018-2019 my children and I were avid Harry Potter fans. I read all the books aloud to them, and they played pretend Quiddish in the yard with their friends and cosplayed various HP characters, especially for Halloween. Sure, we did feel uncomfortable about the Star of David on the floor of Gringots bank in the first movie, the often abusive dynamic between Hermione and Ron, and the lack of queer characters. For many years, though, we overlooked such things because of all the magical details. In 2018 and especially 2019, things changed. My son is a trans man, and I, his birth parent, am agender. It is beyond words to describe how much it has hurt to follow J.K. Rawling's descend into supporting people who, quite literally, do not want us to exist. I urge you to watch the below listed videos by former Harry Potter fans to understand what a proverbial keg of gun powder the Harry Potter topic is (and there are many, many more such videos by many, many KZreadrs: sad, angry, scared, and disappointed). In my opinion, making this video was a mistake. You are likely to witness debate and quarrel in the comments. You may want to unlist this video ASAP to limit the damage, headache, and heartache that will probably ensue. Best of luck handling this situation! kzread.info/dash/bejne/fnadlLGFiZung7g.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z6psytd-n7qagKQ.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/gamT2tiReq3RZ84.html (end list)

A large amount of the soul of Scotland is buried on Culloden Moor. When I visited in the late sixties the moor was a commercial forestry plantation interspersed with gravestones. People, increasingly annoyed, wandered about sharing information about the whereabouts of clan monuments. I was furious that the Scots valued the place so little that it was not even preserved properly and with dignity. Now that has been happily remedied. I have walked the ruined remains of a concentration camp but Culloden Moor is possibly on a par as one of the saddest, most melancholic places I have ever visited.

Not all that long ago, I found myself parked late at Culloden, and ended up exploring the whole site for more hours than I should have. When I got back to the car, the whole place was locked up and deserted. Couldn't get out. I was faced with having to sleep in the car by that spooky, desolate, sad place. That was when a chap suddenly appeared from the far side of a lone vehicle in the car park. It was the caretaker, who'd locked up and then waited most patiently for me to return from my explorations. He was very good-natured about it. I'm English by origin. Looks like the ghosts of Culloden are more forgiving than we think for those terrible events of yore.

Hi Bruce! Very interesting show this is! Taught me a few modern things I didn't know about. (The cone on Wellington's head is hilarious!) I love your humorous side but I'm taking a more serious one here. I'm not from Scotland but my father's people were. After also watching a few films from the thirties and forties, I've decided that a brick from the first burned out croft should be the final horcrux. This happened all over Scotland for centuries as a way of controlling its people. Several rulers and governments over time did this. True, it chased a good number of folks away (incuding my father's family) but it instilled a resolve within the remaining people not only to free Scotland from tyrany but to keep its identity and ways as well. Watching your village and its way of life torn to shreds for another's profit and gain is the basis of Scottish strength in modern times. Making the remaining folk dependent on 'government' handouts in exchange for forgetting their own identies actually burned those identities into them. These things are and will never be forgotten. I use the croft brick because it's the most tangible and recent atrocity in memory. The fight and longing for freedom starts here. I wager it remain until the last Scot dies: in other words, it will be eternal.

There is a theory that due to Voldermort using 3 items from other houses, he did want to use the Sword of Gryffindor, he just wasn't able to get his hands on it as it only appears to a Gryffindor in need. It also was only able to destroy Horcrux's because it is a goblin blade and is enchanted to make it take on what will make it stronger, which seen as it stabbed the Basilisk, it was in imbued with Basilisk Venom which can destroy Horcrux's. So technically when Voldermort was first making Horcrux's it couldn't destroy one, meaning Wallace's sword could be appropriate

Bruce, your list of Horcruxes would not be complete (in my opinion) without something that reflects one of the most soul wrenching episodes of Scottish history, namely - the clearances. But the item I propose is not instantly recognizable by Scots or the Scottish diaspora. It is - like the Declaration of Arbroath - a document. Many (if not most) will not even have heard of it. It's called "The Statutes of Iona" of 1609. It was the match that lit the flame of self-righteous hatred of the Highland Clans, required future leaders to be educated in English, destroy the language of the Gaels, and even gave the Church's blessing to the concept of throwing these "vagabonds" off of their lands. Started as a Protestant salvo against those Clans still Catholic, it evolved way beyond religious fanaticism into a open season on marginal communities so that "Gentlemen" might have the rich trappings of their Southern counterparts. It required the Clan chiefs to spend enormous amounts of money which led to the insidious grasping for income that drove the "improvements" leading to the clearances. And the greed overtook local bias, extending to Lowland areas, as the desire for wealth and power overpowered traditional obligations to the populations of common people. So, being consistent with the soul-tearing process required to create a horcrux - including causing death, if I recall correctly: I propose The Statutes of Iona.

Now that should definitely put them on the list :)

The segue in to the ticket sales info was very smooth. 😄 From the title, I was expecting this to be about wealthy people exerting influence over the 2014 Indie Ref. I was sure that one Horcrux would be a tartan scarf carried back from Argentina in 1978; though, I guess that might be trumped by Archie Gemmill's boot.

I like Archie Gemmel’s boot as an idea - my football related suggestion was going to be a section of the broken crossbar from Wembley. Great video though - I like the idea of items that acquire significance in the national psyche. Something like the Scottish Crown Jewels seems like it would be suggested, but don’t actually have any resonance with people in the way the Traffic Cone does - great suggestion that one.

Brilliant as always Bruce! As an American, the clear parallels between the Declaration of Arbroath and our own Declaration of Independence from England are so meaningful. I thought about bagpipes (particularly the Highland Pipes), but that wonderful instrument is shared by many Celtic cultures - not just the Scots. Might I suggest Adam Smith’s epic tome The Wealth of Nations? It would be representative of the Scottish Renaissance and its influence around the world. Finally, in the spirit of Arbroath - and only slightly tongue in cheek (pun intended), my I suggest the Arbroath Smokie?
