Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

    Norwegian fishermen have a long history with Scotland. When my Great grand pappy. Was 14 somewhere around 1890, he got a job on a Norwegian fishing boat. And left Aardnamurchan Pt. By the time the first world war came along He had risen to skipper. And commanded a merchant vessel crossing the Atlantic. So the relationship with Scotland and Noway and also Denmark goes back a long way.

    Yes, they do have a long history - Scots and Scandos strangling each other en masse as they and their smashed boats are sucked to the bottom of the sea by a howling maelstrom, there to be devoured by ginormous kraken who shytte them out as Englishmen. And never a horrid fate more deserved.

    I got my DNA results back too. And it said that my father resembles the same exact heritage as a 100% Viking would. But yet how could this be, Because there were no Vikings in 1978. Then I contacted my DNA relatives and yes they did confirm that they were once related to a Norwegian, Scandinavian Viking that had the same type of Scandinavian mix as me. But they all told me that it was too far back in history for them to believe, But yet we share the same DNA. So my father must be older than I could imagine. Then I heard rumors about me being born from an Occult "Black Mass" just like on the movie's "Rosemary's baby" "Eye's wide shut" And on top of that, Being crazy enough, I have Norwegian Y-DNA Asperger's, The same kind that Hitler and the Nazi's kidnapped and were hiding. It's a special Y-bloodline gene passed from father to son. Aryan as it may be called. Before the US turned it into a white supremacist thing. The real Aryan's never came from White Europe and not all Vikings were Blonde and blue eyed. I am still trying to figure it all out. Perhaps it's just my imagination.

    Brave men operating in poor conditions, never made Shetland, Orkney has been my furthest trip north in UK. The old boy who taught me to shoot as a lad had been in merchant navy during WWII, not something we discussed much but I had read a book (Victor, Warlord or Commando - actually The Kola Run 1941-1945 ) about the Arctic supply convoys and he had served on the supply runs, three times the ships he was on were sunk. We owe a huge debt to the Merchant Navy and those of many nationalities who served, in the main unrecognised for many years.

    Great video, I was spellbound to it. One of the books my dad left me was "We Die Alone", a biography of Jan Baalsrud, one of the Norwegian agents landed in Norway (the author, David Howarth, also wrote a book called "The Shetland Bus"). We Die Alone is also a compulsive and spellbinding read. I salute the Norwegians who made the dangerous fight for freedom. But human motivation is many fold - many Norwegians also volunteered to fight on the Eastern Front against the Soviets.

  • @gorillaguerillaDK

    @gorillaguerillaDK

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, motivation to fight in a war can be complex! In my family, three brothers, one of them my paternal grandfather), and their cousin who they grew up with, went to fight in the Winter War in Finland, after returning home to Denmark, the cousin went to Germany to volunteer to fight against the USSR together with his close friend Christian Frederik von Schalburg, and the brothers ended up being part of the Danish Resistance Movement… Disillusioned by some of his experiences with the Waffen SS and the fact that while he was fiercely against the Soviet Union, he was probably never a full blown nazi like his friend, the cousin eventually ended up in a Penal Unit, where he died fighting somewhere on the Eastern Front, (it was never confirmed, but rumors said that he was executed by Military Police, after attempting to get back home). His friend, Christian von Schalburg had been a Nazi before the war started, but his hatred towards the Soviet Union had to do with part of his family were nobles in Russia before the revolution - he died on the Eastern Front as well….. While it’s important to condemn the Nazis, I do have a hard time condemning men like my grandfathers cousin! He was a soldier, and after his experience in Finland, he wanted to fight the Russians with his friend, and at the time that meant joining the Waffen SS - sure, it was foolish, and he paid the highest price! Sad story really

    Very interesting book. And the particular sound of the engines was welcome on the Shetland side. The safe side. Where a few men spoke Norwegian to their charges. But there came a time when they would have to pass that dangerous stretch of sea. Eventually some fast patrol boats were brought to do that crossing. But still there were radio operators speaking Norwegian in Shetland. And many years after peace, into the beginning of the jet age, the sound of one of these engines sent a farmer to his radio to have a chat with a friend.

    Hi Bruce. While I've heard some good stories of Norwegian Stories and how they worked with British forces, I've never heard of the Shetland Bus. Good to hear because theres so much that we don't know about military conflicts and the heroes, eh.👌🙂🙋🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇮🇪🙏 Thank you.

    For those of us with a keen interest in the World Wars, like myself, the Shetland Bus is a very famous. Bringing refugees to Scotland, and launching the clandestine raids the Norse Resistance depended upon for orders, arms and explosives. If you've opportunity, the movie "the 12th Man" is the tale of one such Norwegian Patriot, and his trials and tribulations he underwent trying to escape to neutral Sweden, and thus back to the UK to report his groups cover had been blown. A very moving performance by the actors in the film.

    Thanks to you again for this fine video, again made in 4K (so helpful in pausing to read all in the sign about Norway House). I found a digital copy of the Shetland Bus by David Howarth at my county library. He was one of the 2 British officers that spearheaded this mission. It was a fascinating, funny and sad read.

    Found the channel for the history. (Scott-Irish Ancestry) Didn't know all of this story, so thank you. As those of us in the working-class areas of the US run the checklist on the operators of the Shetland Bus: Hard-working Play just as hard Patriotic and brave Tight budgets Someone who can/will fix anything Make due with what you have Stand up for what is right... Check on all. If we were able to meet you, we would shake your hand. You are/were good men. I come from a ranching family. My Grandpa would have said these brave souls were ones to "ride the mountains" with.

    New follower here. I'm from the Netherlands, but the countries and cultures of Scotland, Ireland and Wales have always interested me. I'm lucky to have made a tour around the Scottish Highlands and Orkney as well as Ireland some years ago. There is something about the celtic languages and cultures, the clan structure, patriotism, the music and the telling of stories and legends that just grip me. I own a few books with Scottish fairytales legends and myths, and even a gaelic dictionary, but have never delved into the history of the land much, it seemed too confusing with so many names of rulers, dates and politics (as history usually is). Recently my husband and I have started to watch Outlander and my interest for Scottish history was rekindled and that is how I stumbled across your channel. I am only a few videos in, but I must thank you for breaking the history down in more graspable bits. Looking forward going through the years of backlog. 😄 Also, as English (and certainly gaelic) is not my first language, I am very grateful for the subtitles you put in. Not only does it help with learning names and unfamiliar words, but it also enables this busy mother to follow your stories while cooking with all the background noise that entails. 😊 Thank you sir!
