What a great story about the farmer who found this treasure on his land! I had the chance to visit this gorgeous ship when I was 15 years old... it is just stunning in person and the museum built for it is also magical.

❤❤❤❤ This was fantastic. I do hope DNA at some point can provide more information on these wonderful women. They were very special in their time. As far as the place it might be a spot they fell in love with or their original birth place. Maybe it was just a peaceful place, away from harm & battles. As we don't know but just a guess.

I say it has to do with katana technique is so much different in its form of attack and defense. Kinda hard to grab a sword that is in motion or out of range.

I really do not get why everyone calls them Vikings!!!! They were NOT Vikings, if anything they were Norse. Viking is a verb, it was something they did, not a name!

Because it was an important part of the culture, maybe.

@@elisabet-ms6ck There is a great deal more to their culture than going Viking. In fact, it was not a huge part of it at all! Only a small percentage of the Norse people ever went Viking. In Old Norse, the word 'Viking' meant 'freebooting voyage' or 'pirate raid'. A person would 'go on a viking' ('fara í viking'). However, the word 'víkingr' was also commonly used to refer to someone who went on expeditions, usually internationally and by sea, as part of a larger group. But that is what WE have many accounts of about, but not from them so WE have labeled them as Vikings, they would have not called themselves Vikings.

Very true, it's funny how people forget that the people who were raided the most by them, are the ones who gave them the name that they chose, not by those who were named. As I'm fairly certain that you're correct that would not have been the name chosen by them to be known as, by either friend or foe. As they have a very strong sense of pride about themselves, and wouldn't chose a mere word to represent them as a whole is my thoughts on the subject. What they truly preferred I doubt we'll ever know, especially since the given name is so strongly etched into the world's mindset. Yet maybe someday someone will find something that has the answer to this, and then hopefully we will know for certain, but there will always be those who will use the name of Viking to describe these people of the particular people who are long gone except by bloodlines many generations removed from the original people of whom we speak.

@@timothymilam732 Actually we do know what they referred to themselves as from their writings! They called themselves Ostmen most often, then Danes, Norse, and Norsemen, but never Vikings! :)

I so agree with you. Every time I hear Vikings I say GRRRR!! As a society we have changed names & places to satisfy that society. With many ancestors from that region, I say stop saying that because it's NOT accurate. Native American has been changed to First Nation as an example. Why can't we get the "Viking" changed?

These are 2 people. Just like you and me. And now dug up, after living their lives. And wanting peace upon death. Together. For whatever reason... Yes, we learn about them. And history. But they did their lives. They died, knowing they would not be disturbed. And respected. They didn't WANT you to meddle, to dig them up. History does teach us. But at what cost to the honor & respect of the deceased? You might be, "ok" with it. But they certainly were not. Their lives, their community, their beliefs. All are against what you have done. You desecrated the dead... They did not give you permission. Don't care about what, "science says". These are people. Just like you and me. Now on display, like a circus curiosity. Humiliating... And, I am Danish. I am a descendant of Scandanavian heritage. Let people who have died, have their dignity. You think it is ok? Let people dig up your mother, father, sister, brother, baby. And put them in a glass cube, for all to see. Far away from where they wished to be...

At some point, many years from now, if my grave is dug up and my bones lend some information as to how we lived in my time I would n't feel offended. In fact, I would be honored.
