The Hell Screen - Ryūnosuke Akutagawa (transl. by Morinaka Akira)

Here is a 1918 story from noted Taishō period writer and prize name originator Akutagawa. You may know him from Rashōmon or possibly Rashōmon and Other Stories. Please forgive any mispronunciations as I'm sure they are legion. The image is from a 1969 film adaptation called Portrait of Hell. I wasn't aware of it but I'll definitely be seeking out. I found it through the blog Mondo 70 (mondo70.blogspot.ca/)
The actions of the Lord Horikawa are clearly beyond human imagination and reproach. He banished the spectre of Secretary Tooru simply by waving his, the Lord's, own former carbuncle at it after all.

thank you sooo much for posting this. This is my favourite story from Rashomon and other stories, its beautifully dark and wonderfully written. I have the book but I love listening to audiobooks whilst I'm drawing especially when there read so well.

Lord Horikawa is a Faustian Man, as is the painter. Achievement of lasting artistic excellence > individual suffering

I'll listen to this soon but I'm still going through your catalogue. I found you looking for Ligotti audio, but once finished those I continued with the rest of your stuff. You have a great taste in fiction, and are a very good reader. Thanks a lot for all the short stories I discovered thanks to this channel.

Thank you! One of the most rewarding things about doing this has been hearing from people who have been introduced to new writers through my videos.

This was wonderful, great reading. Anime has ruined me though lol I keep thinking of this anime about hell and how it's run like a business by king Enma's assistant. It's a hilarious and adorable show called Hozuki no Reitetsu.

Haha. I know what you mean. I couldn't stop thinking of Hell in DBZ (or HFIL as the Funimation dub had it). I'm going to have to look into this one. Sounds fun.

To me, that was the most gloomy story of Akutagawa...
