This World Is Full of Monsters - Jeff VanderMeer
If I may borrow the words of Tor commenter fosburg, "This hurt my head and filled my heart."
I'm still processing it and I think I will be for a long time. Incredible.
I urge you to read it; I can't truly do it justice: www.tor.com/2017/11/08/this-w...

Besides listening to this story, I've read two of VanderMeer's novels (Annihilation and Borne), and some of the common themes I see in his work are: painful, unavoidable change; the Butterfly Effect at work; and psychological changes mirroring physical ones. He really is one of the more unique writers that I've come across.

I've been listening to this while painting aaaaaaand... I have no idea what's happening
Listening to this is like reliving childhood innocence being introduced to your big bro's messed up and exhilarating shenanigans.
This was a twister ;) What I personally got from this Rorschach inkblot of a story is.....that we are fundamentally changed by what we take in daily, sometimes it destroys & remakes us. Great narration.
I listen to this on long drives and hope to feel more of it each time. It is it's own version of "The Hero's Journey". The ending forces me into a joy and freedom that isn't completely human.
This is a mind bender. Should probably reread.
This stuff is on another level.

@Kris Mcnugget I believe you must lack a visual imagination, this work is Lovecraft and paper back scfi cover art merged into a surrealist's brush, it's visually stunning to the minds eye and summons a primal fear of what does not conform.

@Kris Mcnugget I can tell you are a skilled author.
Hope you're doing well Thee. I just finished the Southern Reach trilogy and it reminded me that I had first been introduced to Vandermeer here on this gem of a channel. Even if you never upload again, this channel is already full of interesting and formative short stories.

I really can't tell you how much this means to me. It's been a tough few years. One would think I could have done so much while in "lockdown" but the drive just hasn't been there. Personal promise to you that I'll be putting something out soon. I already know what it will be and think it is extremely interesting and formative.

My friend, I must say I love the underlying symbolism in the story, like yourself I'm still trying to gather all this story still has to offer. I love it..I support you and your channel and the great stories you post. I humbly ask you continue on, I eagerly await your next additions...PS. love the Liggotti additions!
Ligotti brought me here; was not disappointed 🙌🏻
That is some fine weird. The story has gnawed its way into me.
Thankyou... What a wonderful reading. I didnt like this at first because I didnt 'get' it. Then I listened again, and I still didnt 'get' it. Then I realised that this wasn't written to be 'gotten'. Much like a Zen Koan, the mind can't grasp it - doesn't know what to do with it. The sybolism, the imagery, the contrast between the supernatural and the mundane - fused together into a beautiful mess. I think this author had a profound insight into something indescribable. Thanks, keep em' coming!
The most beautiful story I've heard/read in a long time. Excellent narration as well. Thank you!

Really? Its just a shell of a story. A silloette. A series of cliches that the author feeds to his 'story monster.' I think I might actually puke.

This should be the official reading.
Great tale, reminds me of the game Scorn in some ways
This was great, both the story and the reading. Thank you.
That was some enticing reading, don't know how I just found out about you, good luck on your career
Oh wow! Thank you so much for this!!!

Wow. Great reading voice!👍👍👍👌👌🖒
Great reading voice. Subbed and bell clicked. Great job. Also, I feel as though this short story is a form of unrelated companion piece of The Southern Reach. It speaks a lot about communication and the changing of "stories", language that we don't understand, however invasive and changing. I could be very wrong, but hey, it's better than going left...and left
This blows my mind! 🤯. Thank you for ruining TV for me! Lol
New sub here. Thank you for this reading, and I look forward to exploring more of your channel.
Listening to this makes me feel like I'm walking using wooden stilts...but the stilts are broken and could collapse at any moment.
Been searching for this story for months
Do we know who “ motherhorseeyes” is? I would love to read more, this person is brilliant.
I have no idea what I listened to but it was good! Poetry/Story!

The story must be told
I don't know if you are aware, or care about this, but I've noticed KZread has inserted ads in all your old videos. Every 6 minutes, then if you try to rewatch... every 2 minutes. It's unfortunate because it's makes these great stories almost unlistenable.

This is really awful to hear. It seems this is just something they can do if you're not a partner or whatever. Very disheartening and I'm not sure if there's anything I can do about it.

I am back again, I seem to have a fetish for this story-creature.

antistory [ an-tee-stawr-ee, -stohr-ee, an-tahy- ]SHOW IPA noun, plural an·ti·sto·ries. a narrative of short-story length that makes no effort to follow a plot and ignores structural conventions, character motivations, and the like.
Such a good title. Such ameteurish and poor excecution.
