Since first discovering this a few years ago, I still listen to it at night in bed, sometimes. It’s my go-to comforting bedtime story. I never grow tired of it. David Warner is the best. He uses his acting skills to tell the story of Hill House and more importantly, the story of Eleanor...so well.

That's wonderful! I find Audible a little flat and functional sometimes, and I really value when I find a reader who can bring a book to vivid life whether it be through acting the characters or just a single compelling voice. David does a bit of both, his authorial voice is strong and elegant, and his reading of the women characters is finely sensitive. He is an excellent Eleanor.

David Warner is the perfect narrator for this classic. With a career in motion pictures that spans over 50-years, David Warner is one of those extraordinary talents that everyone knows on sight, and yet struggles to recall by name, even though he's been there the entire time turning out exemplary performances--one of my favorites.

I know: I assumed they'd get a woman (Claire Bloom probably) to read it but he does such a good job with Eleanor's internal thoughts and her relationship with Theo that it's impossible to fault him. His gift for comedy comes in when Mrs Markway and Arthur arrive later.

They ruined this story in the Netflix series, it bears NO resemblance to the original tale in any way. The entire metaphysical premise of the tale is changed, from the idea of a 'leprous' or 'deranged house' that was 'born bad', to a maudlin metaphor for familial trauma and recovery. I don't know why they scavenged Jackson's work for names just to dump everything else.

But in that show people who die remain in the house so there could be many stories about former residents. Stories about other visitors using the house as a background. Seems like a cash grab.

  • @steerpike66

Spell is entirely the right word. In recent years, I have seen several productions that have to do with dark magic: it's wickedness doesn't distract. The magical spell cast by films such as Mr Eggers VViitch or Mr Aster's Hereditary may seem dark, and terrifying, and evil, but the spell itself, cast with skill and determination by a great artist. is not resistible. The horror is of submission to great danger but therein lies its weird comfort. I adore such work.

Excellently read and a more gripping and in depth story which is more true to the original book than the legendary Vincent Price film ( though that classic film was also great in its own way and for that time). A great story told so well as here, builds authenticity and the picture of real people in our minds, that we can see through their eyes and feel the fear with them, be so very frightened and nervous with them about......about what might................might come next!

There's a great old 1963 picture called 'The Haunting' by Robert Wise with Julie Harris and Claire Bloom that is a classic chiller, and there's a SHITTY remake by Jan De Bont that wastes Lili Taylor and Catherine Zeta Jones. The former is a masterclass in understated psychological horror; the remake is a disgusting mess of bad CGI, Tim Burton production design, and overacting.
