The Haunting of Hill House Chapter 1
The Haunting of Hill House" is a horror novel written by Shirley Jackson, first published in 1959. The novel tells the story of four main characters: Dr. John Montague, an investigator of the supernatural; Eleanor Vance, a shy young woman who becomes Montague's assistant; Theodora, a bohemian artist; and Luke Sanderson, the young heir of Hill House, who invites the three to spend a summer with him investigating the rumored haunted Hill House.
Immerse yourself in the chilling story of four strangers who spend a summer investigating the rumored haunted Hill House, only to find themselves trapped in a nightmare of fear and the unknown. I hope my narration brings the characters to life and will keep you on the edge of your seat as the events of the novel unfold.

Wow, I wish I hadn't just read this again recently. Does that mean I won't listen now? Nope. I absolutely WILL listen. I might listen to Tony read a phonebook if they still existed. But I prefer Shirley Jackson. Thank you for taking on this somewhat daunting task. We appreciate you 💜

I love to be read to and this is my most luxurious pastime. I look forward to retreating into the euphorically recalled past as I do my chores. Thank you so much. I'll have money if I outlive one more relative, and I'll send you a slice. 😉

How many chapters is this book 😅
When I was young and first read of Eleanor's strange, dream-filled journey to Hill House, I found this section oddly disturbing-somewhat surreal. If (as is stated in the opening) one's sanity is kept by frequent escapes from reality through "dreaming", then Eleanor has this practice down to a fine art. Notice how the ugliness of reality keeps intruding and worsening until it confronts her face-to -face. Vile indeed. Superb reading.

One of my absolute favourites! And read beautifully :) I'm always struck by how tragic Eleanor's story is. Right from the outset in these early chapters Jackson gives us a sense of someone so fragile and unsure of herself: exactly the sort of person who should not be travelling to Hill House.

Yes, you’ve about summed her up.
Have always loved the 1963 movie. Read the book for the first time last year when I was on a Shirley Jackson binge. Bravo to your reading of it. So ominous. There’s such a subtle increasing feeling of foreboding to this book. One of my favorites. Thank you
You posted this just in time, we've started reading this book in my English class but I struggle with reading actual books, it's just too un-interactive for me. Your narration is awesome, you spoke very clearly and with emotion. It's hard to find such a good quality audio book for free, subbed! Thanks for helping me survive this class.

this is imo the greatest ghost novel ever written, looking forward to your reading of it on these cold winter nights! We Have Always Lived in the Castle is another favorite by Jackson that's almost as good as this one.

THANK you for getting this classic into production! By far my favorite ghost story ever! I eagerly await each new chapter!
My absolute favorite! Thank you, thank you!
Ooo…. This is good! Character development! Unfortunately, when I think of people driving in England, my mind inadvertently turns to Mr Toad.
A favorite! Looking forward to the next installment. Thank you for doing this one.
Found you through a message on Horrorbabble, glad I found your wonderful channel and looking forwards to going through your back catalogue, thanks for all your hard work.
You must tell me if you have read this before! You were meant to bring tis dimension to this famously narrated so briskly and cooly. YOU understand each character.... And The House. Great job!
Yay for this! I first listened to this story when it was narrated by David Warner way back when audio books were only available on cassette. It was the first time an audio book gave me chills. (When the ghost was knocking on all the doors in the hallway and then pounded on the bedroom door where the girls are.) And now my favorite narrator is doing it! Freaking fabulous! I look forward to the rest with bated breath.
Thank you thank you thank you! One of my favorite stories!!!!!
This book may be my all-time favorite. And the 1963 movie version.

💀 In the night, in the dark ... Great narration of my favorite book. The 1963 movie, titled 'The Haunting' (starring Julie Harris), was directed by Robert Wise. He went on to direct 'The Sound or Music' two years later ... very different types of films!
I've loved this story for decades, and the Netflix series was pure gold.. and your reading of this is as golden. Thank you, Tony.
Excellent story. Can't wait to hear more
Thank you so much Tony I have heard of this one 🤩 and it’s been a few years so it’s going to be pleasure to hear you read it! Genuine thanks and blessings galore! 🙏
Excellent, thank you !
One of my *favourite* Authors! This is one of those books I have revisited often over the years, so thankfully I can enjoy it without my full attention, ( that has to be quite divided lately). I so grateful for your presentation, your professional delivery keeps it clear and nuanced even for one whom has to enjoy it while dealing with other distractions. (If I only could, I'd be running up that hill).
Thank you! So much 🖤 to you for this one!

Perfect!!!!
Thank you Tony! This is a great favorite of mine, and it is going to be a treat to have you read it to us. I do like the original movie, but it did a big disservice to parts of the book, especially to Mrs. Montague, who is a welcome bit of comic relief in the book, and the movie just blows that. Anyway, the book is just brilliant, and so are you!
