The Happy Conclusion to He-Man Masters of the Universe (that you "probably" didn't know exists!)

Ойын-сауық

Scott Toy Guru Neitlich from Spector Creative reviews the MOTU Classics mini comics and how they presented a finale to the story of Adam and Teela (He-Man and, ummm, Teela). What other series dared not to do, we did dare and the dare was Dare. Find out more! Comes with our highest possible recommendation

I wonder how much of our generational nostalgia is also fueled by our perception that so many of these shows in the 80s and 90s didn't have a proper ending (or we didn't get to see it, or the show got cancelled lol) Great video!

I don't remember the point I was trying to make but I recently was saying to someone how a lot of us are scarred because most of the shows we grew up on, both animated and live action, ended without any conclusion. I was told I was overthinking things, lol. But it really almost never happened. I think Voltron was the first animated series I watched that had a conclusion, but they instantly retconned it so that it wasn't really an ending and gave us another season...which then ended without conclusion. Maddening.

I grew up with the original show and it makes me so happy to hear about this kind of good ending for Price Adam. Too many modern stories seem to act like the hero needs to be broken then recover after a decade of misery to train his replacement. But now to see He-Man got to live a good life after winning his conflict and pass the torch to a new hero while not needing to lose his way.

I remember an interview with one of the producers of Gilligan's Island from years ago. He said that the castaways should never get off the island, because if the show was in syndication people would stop watching if they knew people eventually went home. So long as the rumor of a final episode was out there, people would till watch the re-runs to see if this was the episode where people went home. Final episodes that tie up everything were very rare for a long time, with MASH being arguably the most famous one that showed you can end a show and people would still watch it.

Supernatural did this very well. They knew a couple seasons ahead of time that they wanted to end the show voluntarily on a high note, vs. have the material become stale and eventually get cancelled. And so that's exactly what they did. The 15th season was the final season, they wrapped up a couple loose ends, and literally killed off the main characters in the final episode just so we could see them reunite in heaven and know that they had their eternal reward.

I love how in even things like MOTU you got a sense that there was an ending and they could give it. From saving Skeletor by turning him back to Keldor to the movie it’s a great concept and why I prefer it to Transformers or TMNT as you want that finale, you want a great ending.

Sometimes I don't like an ending wrapping everything up. It's nice to think that even after the show has ended, the adventures continued. Rather than it all being wrapped up and left feeling like nothing interesting ever happened after. Sometimes it's nice having things left for the imagination to play with.

I know how you feel about not wanting good shows to end, but with shows like The Simpsons, Spongebob Squarepants, Pokemon, and One Piece going on for years, there style soon gets old and less good to watch. So they have to have finales soon so they can make room for new shows. He-Man may have ended, but at least it had an ending and not have a too long struggle to keep going that would cause it to become less good.

  • @dpurves28

@@dreamguardian8320 Although there's a difference between a show never ending and a show ending without a conclusion. I actually agree that any show will get stale and it becomes difficult if not impossible to come up with new ideas. I still watch but also can't believe the Pokemon series has been going on for three decades. So, yes, He-Man would've had to end sooner or later, but I suspect a lot of people wouldn't want a finale that involved him hanging up the sword and living in retirement, but would prefer thinking that the adventures would continue, even if we don't get to see what they are. Maybe it's the same dilemma people have with video games, in that a lot of the old ones didn't have an ending and you could potentially play them forever, whereas the ones with a conclusion gave a certain satisfaction that you had an ending but then for a lot of people there's no reason to ever play again.

Myself personally, I consider the "classics" lore the definitive lore cause it's just so complete and I enjoy how all the timelines are tied together. Everything had a purpose, even the reviled New Adventures of He-man had him go fight Horde Prime which led to She-ra being possessed by Horde Prime and He-man and Skeletor having their final battle on Trolla. It's just awesome.

Because if an art style can't be owned, then it'd be cool if at least someone set a show unofficially in Filmation era Eternia but without any known characters (to avoid lawsuits). Picture this. It's the end of every media story ever made about the Masters of the Universe and the Sorceress of Grayskull comes on the screen and in Linda Gary voice says, "In today's story we learned alot about the different Masters of the Universes and their different adventures and how they all end up right kids? Unfortunately, we didn't learn everything to know about every adventure and there is still more to discover. Remember the power is within! Don't talk to strangers and don't do drugs! Until next time!" And you think to yourself, "WTF does that even mean and why would you leave me hanging like that!?!?" Now, I truly appreciate what you did combining all stories together with the classic bios. I loved how each one came together like a giant puzzle. It was an amazing adventure ride I was blessed to be apart of. However, now that we have new media we have a bunch of complainers, moaning and groaning about why the new Netflix Masters of the Universe isn't the same(both of them), but somewhere along the way everyone lost the original concept of He-man, She-ra and the Masters of the Universe. It's so simple and He-man reminds us everytime he transforms, "I Have The Power!" So it's us who have the power to control the storyline. That's really the beauty of it. When I first met He-man there was no cartoon and I couldn't read, so it was just me and my imagination. I'm glad there were cartoons and stories, and of course it was a excellent marketing tool to sell toys, but at the heart of He-man's idea was that he gave us the child the power. It's our imagination that creates the story and we have the power to give He-man his happily ever after. So that's what irks me when I hear complaints about new MOTU and POP media complaints. It just sounds like a bunch of whiny kids. When I'm just grateful there is Media to support my favorite toyline. So what if the story is a little different, because at the heart of it all we have the power! It's us, that toy and our imagination that creates the story and the happy ending. Too many of us forgot that was MOTU real orgins! Heck, I don't like how She-ra's ending was in this story, but guess what??? I have the power to create my own happy ending. I just wished everyone could see that and remember that, and maybe not complain so much, and just be grateful to have media and toys from their childhood on the shelves again. I personally think MOTU came at the perfect time in history, because they didn't have any media except those mini comics to support them. It was a slow start for them, but if Jem would of done that then maybe they wouldn't of made Barbie out to be a bully. I love Jem BTW, but let's be honest Jem ultimately copied Barbie, Barbie never copied Jem. Jem copy catted the Darci Doll. The Darci Doll was a copy cat of the Dramatic New Living Barbie. So who copied who?!?!? I know why Barbie and the Rockers made it so fast to Market. Mattel already dealt with that copy cat body with the Kenner Darci Doll and Hasbro waited and entire year to have Media first before they released the dolls. Which gave Mattel time to release the Rockers to market quicker. If only Hasbro would of released the dolls first like MOTU did when they started out then they could knocked Barbie out of her spot, but alas they wanted to market to us first and give us a storyline. By 1986-87 MOTU to my knowledge was the only brand that beat out Barbie in sales, so the folks at Hasbro should of taken a page from what was already a success. But instead they failed, and blamed it on an insider at Mattel. But I have an inkling that the insider also saw the designs too and when they brought it back to Mattel, Mattel was like, "Oh no it's that Darci doll again! Another Dramatic New Living Barbie Copy Cat!" That's what I think what happened. Just look at the articulation and compare the dolls. Our 12" She-ra doll/Figure is absolutely a revolution in articulation and the best doll buck ever produced, hands down! No offense Guru, I'm glad you didn't get to give us that 9" She-ra(although I would of bought her, and I was sad you left.) The MTM Barbies and MOTU Classics are my all time favorite toys btw as far as articulation goes. I absolutely loved the bios, and I appreciate all your hard work on the entire line. Thanks for making a dream a reality, Mr. Guru btw. As a child I too wanted know what those damn secrets were inside that castle. The cartoon always left me scratching my head. The bios as an adult excited me because they threaded everything together, and I kept getting closer and closer to knowing all the secrets! I needed more and more, but along the way I became mad like Skeletor and I had forgot that the power was within. The story is within. The media is just a tool to sell toys to kids. Get the toys. Collect it for yourself. Create your own stories, or better yet give He-man and the Masters of the Universe to the next generation and let them create their own stories, let them have the power too! Otherwise He-man's just gonna be your friend only, he'll never have staying power like Barbie where she was your parents friend, your friend, your kids friend and she'll be here for their kids and the kids after that and the ones after that and so on and so forth. It's all about the relationship between the child, the toy and the stories they create in their imagination. If we just complain about Media and Toys all the time then how selfish are we to not allow MOTU and POP toys to get into the hands of the new generation, and allow them to create their own ending. How selfish of us as collectors to be like this? We have the power but we don't don't want to share it with others, have we become a bunch of Evil Warriors? The coolest thing in the entire universe for me was to watch my niece enjoy all the POP and MOTU characters. I watched as grown adults complained about the last POP media and toys. It was so magical to see her love for all the characters that when I collected the toys for myself, I bought them for her too. The POP Filmation cartoon came alive for her and so did the Netflix one. She was even watching MOTU old Filmation cartoons. This is not an easy feat to appease a 5 year old now a days with todays' graphic pixar animation which is what she likes normally. She learned all the character's names and what powers they had. I cried when she knew who all my old POP dolls/figures from the 80s were. She knew all my MOTU Classic action figures and if it was an obscure figures like He-ro or the Mighty Spector she was so amazed to learn about them and she just absorbed who they were and what they did and how they helped He-man and She-ra, if they were a good guy or bad guy and who fought whom. She couldn't get enough, so we watched New Adventures, 200X as well. Out of all my nephews and nieces this was the one that understood and got it like you and I did when we were that age in the 80s. And I forgot to tell you she's my nephews daughter. So I guess that makes me Orko The Great, but it was just sheer magic to watch how a new generation was forming right in front of my eyes! So one for me, one to archive, and now, one for her. It's tough, but it's worth it to see her have her own adventures. Yes, I too have my gripes, but the fact of the matter is that we need to appreciate that we have something new to pass on to the next generation so they can create their own happy endings. So seeing her watch all the new MOTU and POP media on Netflix and playing with the new toys, while having her own adventures and creating her own stories that's my happily ever after! Let us not forget WE HAVE THE POWER, SO CAN YOU!!!🎼🎶🎶

Although I donnit read the DC comics series, I feel that in almost every other medium, He-Man never receives an ending. Perhaps it was the nature of the beast at the time where animation studios make a certain amount of episodes for a TV series so as it can be used for syndication. As such, it would be neat to see a He-Man animated series with an ending - I feel that the Netflix He-Man series for kids will get a proper one.

Sure that's sweet and all comic summaries that you've given us before. Buuuut..... What about Orko? He and Dree Elle had one of the more "advanced" romances in the Filmation series. Does Dree Elle move to Eternia to be with Orko? (Given his later role with the Snake Men, I'm assuming Orko has not gone back to Trolla.) Do they have kids? What about Cringer? How'd his story turn out? And did Swiftwind's little one get called in as Dare's combat companion? And if Frosta couldn't have He-Man, did she find someone to love? These are the REAL questions that inquiring minds want to know, Scott!

This is so weird. As an animator and an 80's kid, to me He-man is the camp-sandbox of one off episodes with no consequence or particular continuity. That's the magic. I accidentally just now found out that there's this whole culture around it. I understand there's a comic original with darker undertones, but just like with the turtles, I find the light hearted kids cartoon version to be the ultimate fun materialization of the concept. I guess it's understandable for people who like it for the stories and not just the fun Filmation animation style, to want to explore and mature the story further.

( important question at the bottom of this comment ) Scott/Spector, you know I love & value much of your content and your ENORMOUS contribution to MOTUPOP via Classics... but He-Man's Filmation story did NOT end in 1985, and there are MORE episodes of him vs. Skeletor than those in his televised show. There is the Secret of The Sword movie ( the actual FIRST He-Man movie, & the only theatrically wide released animated He-Man, She-ra or MOTU/POP movie ), and then there are over a dozen She-ra episodes ( and the continuity from He-Man to She-ra is seamless, same actors, same writers & animators, same Mattel input... it's basically MOTU continued with a focus shift from He-Man to She-ra, and the movie was a MAGNIFICENT segue to that ) where He-Man co-stars so prominently ( sometimes with Cringer/Battlecat, Skeletor, Eternia and the Sorceress being involved Anyone ) that they are bascially also He-Man episodes: put He-Man's opening credits on them instead of She-ra's is literally all that would be needed to make them He-Man episodes ( and the Christmas episode, of course ). who hasn't seen the He-Man+She-ra movie has literally missed the biggest and one of the best He-Man productions Mattel+Filmation ever did ). He-Man's final fight with Skeletor took place on the She-ra Assault on The Hive episode, as you know. It's a terrible disservice to He-Man fan's who don't know better when major authorities in the He-Man/MOTUPOP community fail to mention that there are also over a dozen She-ra Episodes ( PLUS a major theatrical movie and a Christmas special ) that literally double as He-Man episodes from the same original production team and era. QUESTION: Here is the question I wanted to ask though... without getting into the "but who actually has the rights" issue ( though I notice Mattel had no She-ra toy releases this year, whereas last year the did both a Frosta and a Shadow Weaver in the Masterverse line ), since Dreamworks owns the Filmation rights, even assuming that was ALL they own, can't they use He-Man/Skeletor et al as long as they keep them in Filmation style?? It would seem they can, since there is a Filmation He-Man Geico commercial from 2017, and just last year, Filmation He-Man and Skeletor did a cameo in a C and D Rescue Rangers movie. So wouldn't Dreamworks be able to mae more unified He-Man and She-ra content, just with the Filmation rights, as long as they kept the style and characters strictly based on the Filmation model??

Why did King Randor had to die for He-Man to become king? Randor could simply have abdicated the throne and become Prince Randor. This isn't an uncommon thing in monarchies. Alternatively, Queen Marlena could have turned Eternia into a democracy/constitutional republic after King Randor's death. She's originally from the USA after all, and should hold American values. After King Randor's death she would hold vast political power as Queen Mother and regent to Prince Adam. I have wondered for a long time why Queen Marlena never pushed for social and political reform? How is she ok with social inequality caused by feudalism where serfs serve nobles? Is Queen Marlena a golddigger after all?

Do you think part of what drives collectors with toy lines, is the fact they grew up going on adventures, feeling like part of the team, and because it never had a conclusion, it feels like unfiinished business. So we collect, for closure, and to show we havent forgotten our duty, and our friends? .... This applies to a lot of toy lines, star wars, he-man, thundercats, ninja turtles etc. Most of these lines with huge collector bases dont have a definitive "THE END". Lines that do dont generally have collector fan bases as large.

It was hinting, that Teela was going to wind up with Prince Adam and He-Man, as she said she would like a man with Adam's wit and He-Man's courage, but wondered where she would ever find such a man .
