King Grayskull Origins - The Ultimate Version Of He-Man, The One Above All, Ultra-Masculine Hero!
Ойын-сауық
Welcome back to another Marvelous Video, and today we will be taking a look at another origin story. We are talking about King Grayskull from the He-Man Universe.
He-Man made his television debut in 1983. Netflix recently released an animated project, which is a direct sequel to that show; honestly, it was pretty awesome.
So, in this video, we will discuss the origins of He-Man's ancestor, King Grayskull. So, sit back with your snacks and prepare to get marveled.

The Netflix version of Grayskull seems somewhat off to me......I rather the 2002 depiction with a very great back story.....as a matter of fact. i rather the 2002 version of He Man overall than the 2021 Netflix version. It had the best He Man story line & stayed more true to the original 80s version in my opinion.

I think we need to address something that a lot of people choose to ignore: Fans just plain hate retcons. You find something you like, become a fan, come to love it over the years, then some behind-the-scenes creative guy says: "Nope, we're changing what you love, your version doesn't exist any more, and if you don't like it, YOU'RE the problem." If this were happening in an interpersonal relationship, it would be called "gaslighting." Didn't used to be that way. Remember New Coke in 1985? Coca-Cola fans didn't take to it, so the company got rid of it and switched back to something closer to the original formula, and called it "Coca-Cola Classic." Coca-Cola didn't call the fans "snowflakes" and refuse to back down; they gave the paying customers what they wanted. And later on, Coca-Cola introduced new flavours to go along with the original flavour they already had, like Cherry Coke and Vanilla Coke, and those get welcomed with open arms. Keep the original material and just add more -- that's how you do it! Same thing goes for the short-lived Superman Red and Superman Blue after the "Death of Superman" story arc. DC fans just didn't like them, so they were phased out and Superman Classic was brought back. Nobody was accused of being Anti-Red or Blue-ist, they just didn't like the change, and again, the paying customers got what they wanted. And how about that 1998 American "Godzilla" film? Not a bad giant monster film in and of itself, but it was just so different from the Godzilla we knew and loved, it was unrecognisable, and Devlin & Emmerich got a severe backlash from all sides. And then Devlin & Emmerich started throwing tantrums and saying nasty things about their critics, even the levelheaded ones who didn't hurl abuse. Which, come to think about it, is probably where this toxic "It's the fans' fault, not ours!" mentality stems from. I'm not saying there aren't some genuinely horrible, bigoted people out there in the varoius fandoms -- I KNOW there are; I've argued with a lot of them -- but it's time the creative types accept that if they mess with what people have grown to love, it's not going to be very popular. Personally, I love to see expansion in the properties I enjoy; MORE is always welcome, especially if done with respect for the previous material and the feelings of the fans! But re-writing something we loved then and telling us we're wrong for not liking the changes? That's the height of arrogance, and a great way to lose the support of the fans.
@jackhummer8344

This argument doesn't really hold much weight in my opinion. I mean, you do realize that many of the characters we are familiar with are the result of retcons, right? Like Lex Luthor being a corrupt businessman with his company rather than just a mad scientist. That was introduced in the 80s as part of a company-wide crossover, decades after the character was introduced. Alfred being Batman's legal guardian and father figure also wasn't introduced until the 80s, decades after the character was introduced. Heck, originally He-Man was a barbarian hero without an alter ego. Prince Adam wasn't introduced until later. Characters change all the time.
@Beedo_Sookcool
2 жыл бұрын
@@jackhummer8344 Yeah, but how many times do you see "Prince Adam sucks! The only REAL He-Man is the original four mini-comics!" in fan groups? There were 1982 fans that hated the Filmation treatment back in 1983. There were 1982 and 1983 fans that hated the Space He-Man re-do in 1989. There were 1982, 1983, and 1989 fans who objected to the 200X redesigns and MYP relaunch. There are 1982, 1983, 1989, and 2002 fans who practically spit blood every time someone mentions the MOTU Classics bios starting in 2008. And so on and so forth. I'm sure a lot of comics fans didn't like the Lex Luthor and Alfred retcons you mentioned, back when they happened; there just wasn't an internet for them all to get onto and complain, back then. I remember talking to a James Bond fan in a comic shop back in the early-mid-1990s who was still bitter about a 007 story where the author -- who was not Ian Fleming -- killed off Bond's son in 1973, or something like that. That guy was carrying around that resentment for over 20 years, and his only outlet was telling people in person . . . which he did at great length. So I stand by what I said. Just because you don't have those feelings, doesn't mean nobody else does. I bet a lot of people feel this way about retcons; they just haven't spent as much time thinking about it and trying to put it into words as I have.
@jackhummer8344
2 жыл бұрын
@@Beedo_Sookcool Actually, I've come across several fans who prefer the original He-Man minicomics and don't care much for Prince Adam. Also, Superman Red and Blue aren't even a retcon. They're a change to the status quo. Honestly, your argument falls flat because you're not even consistent with what counts as a 'retcon'. Plus you literally said "it's time the creative types accept that if they mess with what people have grown to love, it's not going to be very popular." And you said you stand by this despite it being blatantly untrue, as I have already pointed out. Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury is popular. Billy Batson and Captain Marvel being the same person rather than two separate people who switch places is popular. The Teen Titans animated series is popular despite all of the changes it makes. The DCAU is popular despite all the changes they make, like making Hawkgirl a founding member of the Justice League and pairing her with John Stewart. DC has rebooted and retconned itself so many times. So has He-Man. So has Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And while not all the old fans like these new versions, they still tend to be popular and successful with both old fans and new fans. I guess I don't really get the argument you're trying to make.

@@Beedo_Sookcool What? Nothing you said makes any sense. You're the one that made the broad statement "fans hate retcons" while providing examples that don't even match the definition of retcon. I literally used your own words to point out how they don't hold up, since you argued that when creatives change something it's not going to be popular, yet the actual evidence suggests otherwise, which makes your entire argument confused.

@@jamisonfrey3452 I completely agree King Grayskull was one the best episodes, for me I enjoyed other episodes like Awaken the Serpent, Out of the Past, the Mystery of Anwat Gar and Sky War. I remember He-Man/Prince Adam at times had shown weakness at times like "Mekaneck's Lmabert" where he was defeated by Marzo's amulet or how during "Mystery of Anwat Gar" he was brutally beaten by Samurai suited Skeletor. It's obviously great they didn't make him an OP level character like in every episode of the show. @@Kal-Grayskull Exactly. The writers did an incredible job at fleshing out the side characters and they did it without having He-Man take a back seat in his own show. The writers were also successful in delving into the lore, mythos and past of Eternia. You could tell that they had a lot of love and respect for the franchise when making the 200X series. That's something I really appreciated as a life long fan. I don't think the 200X show will ever be outdone. It's simply the best that motu has to offer imo. It seems like that was just a good time for reboots. The TMNT cartoon that was released around the same time was excellent as well, and I know it was a bit later, but I really enjoyed the 2011 Thundercats reboot too.

Two of my favorite crossovers ever. You could tell the writer was a real fan of Thundercats. Lion-O was the MVP of the entire first crossover, and all members of Team Cat got their licks in against Skelegod. Not so sure about his love for MOTU, if you read between the lines (Mainly when the big final battle happens, he writes for MOTU "And they fight on, whether they're a warrior, or a wizard, or a soldier, or... *whatever these circus freaks are* 😁) Plus Panthro and Tigra tech completely outclassing Man at Arms tech (To be fair Tigra also makes a boneheaded mistake on grounding the wires) But regardless MOTU was a good rendition in general.

Revelation is not a sequel to the original Filmation show. Kevin Smith ( the showrunner of the series ) has said so himself in a tweet. Here is what he had to say... "The show's producer is Mattel- so everything we do in Revelation is more Toy-based. The old show is owned by another studio, which is why I've always said our masters official series is a spiritual sequel to the old show. Legally, we can't be an actual sequel to Filmation" So, Revelation exists within it's own continuity and is not a sequel to the Filmation show. Legally it can't be and thank God too. Imo the show was rubbish and I'm glad it can't tarnish the legacy of what came before it. I do highly recommend the 200X series. It is an excellent example of a classic brought back right.
@Fenris30

How do you make a sequel when you technically can't? You do it anyway. Fuck Legality. Mattel Owns Masters of the Universe. they Commissioned Filmation to do a 22min 130 episode Commercial based on the Toy they created. How do you own something that was created to sell something else then tell the owner of that other thing they can't use the thing that wouldn't even exist had they not commissioned it to help sell their thing? That baffles the hell out of me. Look at the First Episode it's the Filmation show in it's Entirety, Both in Look and Tone, sure they changed some of the Outfits but it's still that show. Slowly though they move the Style Away from that Show hence the Time Skip Now they can tell whatever they want with free reign. They basically had Deathwing Blow up Azeroth. The Mike Young Show was a Different Show Based on the same Masters of the Universe Toyline. King Grayskull wasn't apart of that original Toyline but Mattel liked the idea so they trademarked it and he became a Masters of the Universe Character like Orko who was originally created for the Filmation show. Now should characters remain as they were originally created when folded into another show based on a different timeline yes or no? Me? I say No. If Teela can be a Black Chick in the CGI show then King Grayskull can be Black in Revelation since it's based on a Property He was NEVER IN. Same with Andra Never In the Filmation Show. Now if Andra had been Illeena from the drug Episode and they'd made her Black then I would've been Pissed cause She had been an on screen character but none of the Characters from that Show that appeared *on screen* were Changed Race or Appearance wise. NONE! Ileena who was supposed to Be in this show but was cut for time was played by Smiths Daughter a white girl, So Stop with the Bullshit I'm Sick of it

Exactly. They were lazy with the race swapping instead of building up the other black characters that already exists. A black fan actually asked one of the showrunners why they resorted to race swapping instead of using some of the already existing black characters. The fan felt that it was like getting a hand me down. The showrunners response was that nobody gave a crap about characters like Clamp Champ and Sir Laser-lot. That is absolute nonsense. Characters like Clamp Champ, and Sir Laser-lot could have finally been given a chance to shine. Instead Clamp Champ played such a small role that he might as well not have even been in it and Sir Laser-lot was nowhere to be found. Clamp Champ is a boss and Sir Laser-lot is a Knight with a kick ass design and freaking laser swords. What's not to like? Imo Revelation was nothing but waisted potential.

I think it's kind of a shame that New Adventures of He-Man and the 2002 reboot get sandwiched in between the OG era and the trinity of reboots we have now because they both gave us stuff that would be permanently added to the franchise for the better. New Adventures gave us Mara who was done amazingly well in the She-Ra reboot and moved so many fans to tears with her story, and the 2002 reboot really helped bring in King Grayskull which would be great to see in Revelations with a great performance from the always great Dennis Haysbert and then there's the comics. In turn, kudos to the She-Ra reboot for giving us Double Trouble considering how we've been waiting for them to appear in the animated continuity for decades and reinventing Horde Prime into arguably the best he's ever been for a story. Also, love how Revelations incorporated multiple toylines and playsets in Etheria storylines that never got to be there in the original. Love how we got Scareglow and Preternia in current continuity.

Thank You for this summary. Sadly all these new stories about the history of Eternia seem like a forced and hurried attempt to create some sort of a background for another shallow cartoon that obviously lacks the depth and the ideas that make a good, believable and timeless epic tale. The world of Eternia as told in "Revelations" and other attempts at storytelling doesn't make much sense and in consequence all the stories told around these hollow characters seem superficial and pointless in the end. I even prefer the FILMATION cartoons and the mini comics, because they don't try to explain the world of Eternia with shallow and pointless story ideas. I still believe that the archetypal figures and characters from the original Masters of the Universe toy line (including essential ideas from the mini comics and cartoons) can be taken as a great source material for an epic space opera with many interesting plot points and a world of great stories and adventures. But the whole endeavor depends on really good ideas for believable world building. Eternia should be a world that seems relevant from our point of technological and social development, extrapolated a few decades or centuries into the future. Eternia could be told as a fallen world/ a failed attempt at terraforming a planet/ an orphaned society, stranded on a strange world with all its hazards and challenges yet to be discovered. We'd have to think about how life and humanity will develop on the long run and how different lines of development would eventually meet or collide on their respective journey through the cosmos. In this tale of two (twin) planets - Eternia and Etheria - the show could tackle important social and philosophical questions with different points of view embodied and illustrated in the different, colorful species and characters, coexisting in this interplanetary society. This universe can all be set up as an amalgamation of the most important and influential works of science fiction and fantasy, giving more thought and depth to all the questions concerning our current paths of social and technological development. And the title "Masters of the Universe" could be posed as a philosophical question around which the plot revolves rather than a pretentious and boastful name for a group of superheroes.

Not really so why a black Kang or the other dude (high evolutionary) or Johnny Storm on the third fantastic four movie.
I see the last breaks have to ruin everything.

King Grayskull was white in the 200X show which is where the character first appeared. The Netflix 'Revelation' series takes place in another continuity separate from the 200X show. Netflix being the big brains that they are decided to pointlessly give King Grayskull a lazy race swap instead of using and building up the characters of color that already exist within the motu mythos. So the white King Grayskull and the black King Grayskull are two separate characters. Two different interpretations of the same idea.

Dont understand how Revelation is NOT related to the 2002 series. In this video, it shows that King Grayskull from 2002 is one and the same, dressed the same, married to the same woman, the only difference is his race. The 2002 version is also more like Revelation. Funimation version is ridiculous, did not have King Grayskull, and has not aged well.

Zodak was a race swapped Zodac. It wasn't until years later that the Classics canon made them separate characters. But since there is no white Zodac in the 2002 series, it means they took a white character and replaced him with a black version. They swapped a white character with a black character, which is what people claim to hate. Double standards.

I'm sorry but I never liked Kevin Smith's take on King Grayskull. It was really forced to race swap the character. I really love his appearance and story in the 2002 series which was disappointing as to what they did to the Revelation series. See that they appropriated him for diversity now.
Revelation ruined D'Vann with broken SJW equality. I'm all for representation, but I don't take kindly to pointless tokenization. Zodak from 2002 was an acceptation, 200X was its own thing and according to ancillary was only the second to take on the name. Making King Grayskull black and other things doesn't make the series feel like a worthy continuation of the 80s cartoon, but another Star Wars Sequel Trilogy filled with nostalgia pandering, Mary Sue protagonist, unresolved plot holes, and flawed motivations. I could write a better version of this despite the description being broken up, can be translated into a complex story that make Kevin Smith and Ted Biaselli look like Chris Chan with how bad they made MOTUR.
