The Halal Guys' Chicken And Gyro Platter Is NYC’s Most Legendary Street Food | Legendary Eats

The Halal Guys first came to the streets of New York City in 1990, when the three founders opened up a hot-dog cart in Midtown. They realized there was a demand from Muslim cab drivers looking for a halal meal, so they began serving American halal food from the cart.
The Arabic term halal means ‘lawful’ and is often used in Islam to describe meat that is permissible to eat based on specific religious guidelines. But in New York, many people know halal as the affordable food they can find at many street carts across the city.
At The Halal Guys' original cart on 53rd Street and 6th Avenue, people wait in line for the iconic combo platter, a foil dish packed with chicken and gyro over rice, accompanied by lettuce, tomato, pita, and the famous and secret red and white sauces.
Editor's Note: This episode was filmed in January 2020. The Halal Guys' carts in New York City are currently open for takeout while restaurant locations provide both takeout and delivery. Check with your nearest location for details.

When I saw the taxi drivers it reminded me of my previous job when I used to be a postman for the court of appeals I used to work from 7 a.m to 7 p.m the legal time for delivering posts , now I work as an administrative coordinator in the office & although salary is higher & with less hours but not as passionate as when I used to drive & deliver & grab some of the street food & sometimes stay at a cafe a little bit with an adequate salary although it's less. But man I really feel you working at weekends now, it's unusual.

Hey here's a tip! Do the White sauce and just do tiny dots of the red sauce I just buy the packets. That way it's evenly distributed it's when it's a lot that it's impossible to eat because it's so hot. Got the red sauce makes it super delicious as long as it's just tiny bits of it. That's for me. But my husband loves spicy so he goes to town with it.

I've been visiting Halal Guys in NYC since 1996 or so, so I have a certain expectation when it comes to my Gyro and let me tell you .. the Rockville, MD location (closest to me currently) disappointed severely. The biggest let down was that they don't cut fresh from the spit like in NYC. It's precut and stored in bins where the flavor is lost forever. That and they refused to cook green peppers and onions with my meat. Also, the franchises serve the white sauce in packets. Not a compete loss there, but you do miss that feel from the bottle. I think the chain restaurants could do a little better in accommodating those who know exactly what an authentic 53rd & 6th gyro tastes like.

"But in New York, many people know halal as the affordable food they can find at many street carts across the city." - ngl this is problematic. Halal should only mean what it means in Arabic. If it takes on a new meaning, that's not fair to Muslims who are looking for actual halal food. It's like calling something that's not vegan "vegan" or calling something that's not gluten free "gluten free"

agreed, like adam ragusea video on how to pronounce food name. the meaning of a name should be as the same (or similar) as the intention of the one who created the name. unless it's totally came out from something really different that just spelled similar. such as french for bread is pain (idk any examples 😅)

The first time I was recommended to try Halal Guys, I was skeptical. Growing up in a country with a lot of "better then thou" muslims, I wasn't too keen to visit another muslim joint now in the US. However when I walked in, the hospitality was what hit me first. Even though the store was busy, the store manager still took the time to chat with us. Finding out where we were from he greeted us in arabic and I could respond. This shocked me because it was a big no no in my country and was severely frowned on if you are not a muslim. Then it was time to eat. Since covid I had to leave the US and I can say one of the only foods I miss so badly is Halal Guys. So good

I first found The Halal Guy's when I was in school, and we would head into the city. Now I have a location not far from work and it is my favorite place to eat.
