Johnnie's Iconic Italian Beef Is A Delicious Mess Of Beef And Gravy | Legendary Eats | Insider Food
With how ubiquitous Italian beef sandwiches are in Chicago, it's hard to pick just one. But the line outside Johnnie's Beef and its #1 rankings on several best lists are a good indication that this spot is one of the Windy City's favorites.
According to Eater, Johnnie's Italian beef sandwich is considered by many to be the "shining standard that others strive to achieve." Other publications, customers, and critics agree for several reasons. The meat is well-seasoned with an array of secret spices. It's sliced thin and accompanied by either sweet peppers or giardiniera loaded with crunchy carrots, celery, and chiles. Customers who order it dipped get a generous helping of gravy that's sure to be absorbed by the plush French bread holding all that beefy goodness together.

I'm so damn spoiled to live in Chicagoland - Turano bread is the absolute bomb. Johnnie's is one of the best - I've been making my own Italian Beef sandwiches for decades, and I'm still chasing that flavor profile. It's the Moby Dick to my Ahab - hopefully it doesn't drag me to the depths. Although if I'm going to drown, let it be in that juice.
@danielmarquardt4341

Regrettably the Turano used doesn't make the cut for me. Its fine if you make it at home and toast the loaf in the oven to firm it up but anything from a restaurant is going to be McDonald's grade

I had this sandwich while traveling through Chicago a couple months ago. At first glance I was saying "Meh, looks like a typical beef dip sandwich". After taking a bite I was amazed how good it tasted. Looking forward to going back and getting another one.

What makes it special is that it has that umami or extra beefy flavor that other beef sandwiches don’t have in other cities. I grew up in Philadelphia and the roast beef sandwiches don’t have that extra savory flavor like how it is in Chicago

ADD A PEPSI
I see comments saying the sandwich shouldn't be so wet. You really have to try it. No one I know has gone back to a dry Italian Beef after they have tried it dipped. It's a whole other dimension of flavor. The gravy/ au jus adds so much extra creamy, salty, spicy, beef-laden umami flavor to an already delicious sandwich, that the only way it could be improved it by adding a classic Chicago-style Spicy Italian sausage to the sandwich. At this point the sandwich has become so mind-blowingly amazing, that after eating one, the birds will spontaneously sing in the trees as the sun breaks through the clouds, the planets will align, and one will have their faith in a higher-power restored. Peace in our time, people...peace in our time.... edit: changed "Polish" to "Spicy Italian".

@@zeeshan4102 then why did they make her go to a bbq place
Wow, the Italians don't even snitch on their sandwich recipes! Rispetto!
I just ate and my stomach is growling and my mouth is watering watching this. I'm literally about to fly there from CT on my next vacation just to eat that sandwich... damn that looks so frickin good.
OMGoodness !!! THERE IS NOTHING IN THE WORLD LIKE A JOHNNIE'S COMBO !!! This is a contender for "Death Row Dinner" and should be on The Whole World's Bucket List for places to eat a combo before you die !!! The menu is super short and the patron lines go around the building. I have done the 62 mile round trip to treat family and friends to Chicago's greatest tasting beef and sausage sandwich. Throw in a homemade Italian ice and a tamale... and drift away to a state of blissfulness !!!
No one makes italian beefs like Chicago does my god.
Butta know 🐀
even if they told you EXACTLY what's in the spice mix, I guarantee you that you'll still fall short of what they make, and it will end up costing you MORE than it would to simply go there and slop it up ! LOVE Johnnies

Anybody with any experience in food could look at and taste their spice blend and probably nail almost every ingredient in it. And if you omitted one or 2 ingredients in it, most ppl would never be able to tell the difference. What truly makes this sandwich great is the technique and quality of ingredients. Too many ppl harp on the"secret ingredient" when in reality the secret is right there in plain sight. It just creates intrigue that keeps the customers coming.

best italian beef in chicago 100%
The best beef you will ever have. The italian sauage is just as good. Fries are also amazing.👌🏻
We had a day they fed us hot beef sandwiches at work during employee appreciation week. One of the guys had been to Chicago, and I had seen the double dip on Man vs Food. Added the peppers and it was the best sandwich ever.
I am so happy I didn't make a complete dork out of myself 🤣🤣 . Thanks Food Insider & Johnnies Beef!

Great segment and am jealous 500 miles away, however, two items were omitted from the review, the beef and sausage combo, not only is the beef world class, but the sausage is unbelievable!!! Second the Italian Ice!!! This is a must and goes hand in hand with every sandwich!! Johnnies is the best ever!

Their fries are also severely underrated, seriously amazing. Now those you’d want to dip in cheese or ketchup for sure.
