The problem was injuries, countless injuries. The most games he ever played in a season was in his rookie year. His body betrayed him.

That would have been such a waste of his amazing defensive talent. Most of his value assessing stats were high because of his defense more than his offense.

@@PBMdanya - sort of. When he first started, teams rarely shifted the infield. Also, they were just starting to use SABR to make some decisions, whereas now it’s like a computer just tells people where to stand, what to swing at in a given count. It dictates too much of the game imo. I can’t wait to see the increases in offensive production that will come next year with the shift banned and the pitching clock!

One of my favorite players to watch growing up even though my Sox had to end Rocktober in 2007. Him and CarGo made the Rockies super fun to watch in the early 2010s. Barring injuries he could’ve gone down as a possible top 5 short stop of all time

Glad you made this video. He really could’ve been considered the best SS of all time. I remember being so heartbroken when he was traded, and that was a terrible moment to be a Rockies fan (the return was also garbage for how amazing of a player he was). I’ve always wondered what could’ve been. I also wish he would’ve gotten one more year in Colorado, but I understand the reasoning for him never wanting to go back. Same for Arenado and Story. It hurts seeing us grow such amazing talent, only for them to want more because it’s not something our team culture doesn’t provide

One thing to add to his legacy is he really cemented the current trend of having, big strong short stops who not only flash the leather, but also are extreme power hitters. I know it had happened before, we saw some during the steroid era (which I don’t count), and Cal Ripken really was the first to play that role without juicing. However even when Tulo was still coming up, a lot of teams were playing the little speedy guys with good gloves and slap hitters. That’s completely changed, now we see Machado, Corey Seager, Carlos Correa, Story, etc.

Tulo was awesome to watch, and I wish that his career could have gone longer. I didn't care about the injuries, I thought we were going to win the World Series that year after bringing in Josh Donaldson and Russell Martin earlier in the season along with Devon Travis having an MVP caliber start to his career. Just a shame Tulo's muscles were made of cheese strings. I wonder how much of a difference it would've made if Tulo was like 6' instead of 6'3"

It wasn’t just that Tulowitzki had better fielding numbers than Rollins in 2007… Troy Tulowitzki had the highest baseball reference dWAR in the MLB among all positions that year by a full win He had the highest fangraphs defensive component among all rookies (6th across all players), while Ryan Braun had the lowest among all rookies He tied for the highest fangraphs DRS at 31 while Rollins was tied for 48th with 5 Troy’s snub in 2007 was actually part of a six year streak of the highest dWAR player in the MLB not receiving a gold glove, cementing it’s title as the most erroneously chosen award in sports. It wasn’t insignificant that Tulowitzki replaced Clint Barmes either; Barmes had been 2nd among all positions in that stat in 2006.

Really?!? The flat of Pillar's chest hitting the flat of Tulo's back. The "impact" moved him about 3 inches. His head didn't snap back, his hat and glasses never moved. If he had had a raw egg strapped to his back it would barely have broken. How does that collision break bones? Considering the hits people take in football, rugby, hockey, etc. that are 100x harder and from more compromising angles, this is just bizarre to me. But that's baseball, I guess....

Dude, you're ready to say he "could have" been the "best shortstop of ALL TIME" based on a few admittedly great seasons. That's grossly premature.

I think that's the thing with "could have beens"...people focus on the few seasons and go "he would have hit ALL the baseballs ALL the time and did ALL the stuff, if only...".but at the end of the day..you just have to look at the whole career, nothing else really matters.
