It's hard to believe that at one point the Marlins had a young core of Miguel Cabrera, Hanley Ramirez, Dontrelle Willis and Josh Johnson, and nothing ever came of it. Loria really was a terrible owner

They had a power-hitting infield of Cabrera, Hanley, Uggla. I remember that there were rumors that Arod was gonna sign with them after the 2007 season (moving Cabrera to first base and Arod at third). Imagine that infield.

When Hanley Ramirez made his first all star team in 2008, it's crazy how stacked the Marlins were as a whole. 3 30+ HR guys and Jorge Cantu right behind with 29. Out of the 6 guys with at least 500 PAs, only one had an OPS+ below 100 (Jeremy Hermida, who had a 90). Hanley was amazing, but Dan Uggla, Mike Jacobs, and Josh Willingham all had some really solid years in Miami. Also overlapped with the tail end of Miggy and the beginning of Stanton. Wild how much hitting talent the Marlins have had.

So true. As a young black baseball player and fan, Hanley and Dontrelle were the two guys I would tune in just to watch. Breaks my heart to recall the caliber of teams we had. So many great unheralded hitters and we just traded em all away, it really soured me on baseball for a couple years. Back into now and if they ever trade Jazz I’ll probably never watch a Marlins game again

Hanley with the dodgers was legendary. I’m 2013 if he didn’t break his ribs in a hbp in the playoffs they would have won. He was the hottest hitter in that time

i remember him hitting a home run into the third deck of that brick building in petco park. he was terrible defensively, but i think he may have been under instruction by the dodgers to not overdo it on the field to avoid injury

It was fun watching Hanley Ramirez play, Despite never making the World Series he was so underrated for his time and skill.

I watched a Braves game from June 29, 2012 just randomly the other day. Dan Uggla was given a headset and was asked if Andrelton Simmons had the potential to be as good as Hanley Ramirez. Uggla said Hanley was the best hitting shortstop he had ever seen. Interesting

As a Marlins fan, he captured my imagination during the final years at Dolphin Stadium. His batting title season of 2009 was absolutely epic. Him being a part of an infield in 2008 who would all slug over 25 home runs. ROY winner joining Dontrelle Willis and Jose Fernandez as the Marlins to win one. His fallout with Fredi Gonzalez and the Marlins broke my heart

That was his fallout = his attitude. I think that happened because the Marlins owner, Loria, just treated Hanley like if Hanley was his son who could do no wrong and he made Hanley like the face of the franchise.

I grew up going to Marlins games every month from 02-2012. It was so much fun watching Miggy, Hanley, Uggla, Hermida, Cantu, Beckett, Lowell, Conine, Dontrelle, even Cody Ross. And seeing young Stanton was fantastic. It's crazy how much talent these guys had over the years and the fact they got rid of them. Out of all of the players, Hanley was by far my favorite to watch, I loved his swing, so much that I imitated his batting stance! Great video man, deserves a ton of more views.

We loved him in LA. When he was healthy he was still an offensive force at the plate. If he didn’t have those broken ribs during the playoffs who knows how far the dodgers could of gone.

@@scullystie4389 I know a lot of dodger fans are bitter sweet about Kershaw perfect game bid lost due to Hanleys error but to me that didn’t matter. I still remember when we traded for him our team didn’t have much and he brought that life and spark plug back to dodgers during that time.

I remember he was number 2 in my top 50 mlb players book from 2009. Behind only Pujols and above guys like Arod, Braun, Greinke, and Halladay

You're right! That's my bad, but it also makes Hanley's season even more elite among shortstops then, lol.

i went to a lot of marlins games in that 5 year gap when hanley was a beast. was living in florida at the time and tickets were dirt cheap compared to the prices in NY so i went often. Was a big fan of his.

I remember watching Hanley all the way back when he was on the Portland Sea Dogs and I was so sad when they got rid of him but was then so excited when they finally got him back, he was always one of my favorites

Hanley was one of my favorite players growing up and he made everything look so effortless. I knew he was very good, but statistically I didn’t realize he was dominant. Excellent video.

My favorite player growing up! The way he generated power from his legs I was able to learn how to do that myself thanks to a great hitting coach and man I miss the young days lol

Hanley's 2013 season was pretty crazy. In barely more than half a season, he posted 5.2 bWAR, while also playing the best defense of his career. His defense still wasn't great in 2013, but it was absolutely good enough to justify a >.400 OBP player. 2013 was the lowest scoring year since 1992, with the league-wide OBP down at .318, which is how Hanley managed to pile up an absurd ~10 WAR pace - if you're still hitting in a low-offense era, you can stack WAR to the sky.

As dodger fan it was always exciting seeing him play against the dodgers cause he really was that damn good back then. Even when he came over he would still mash the ball. His defense wasn’t great at all but seeing him live in person the ball came off his bat like almost no one else. He could square up a ball and it would scream all over the field.

As I visit my family in Florida going to Marlins games and watching Hanley was my favorite thing to do. Hanley my favorite player during his days, wish he stay healthy and so mad Red Sox gave him up as a rookie

Hanley Ramirez singhandedly won me 3 straight titles in my 16 team keeper Roto League and I picked him up as a FA after I realized he went undrafted. Batting average, steals, power, run production as an every day shortstop. This was in a season where Derek Jeter was reentered in the draft pool in my league and went 2nd overall. Yeah, I freaking LOVED Hanley Ramirez.

Oh man those Marlins teams with Hanley, Uggla, Anibal, Nolasco, Josh Johnson were my favorite teams to watch. Sucks that I was 6 years old in 03

I was just thinking about this. Growing up, I remember how people (talking heads on ESPN; social media wasn't really a "thing" yet) were talking about A-Rod being one of the best ever at his position, but one guy -- I wanna say Buster Olney -- said flat out one night that Hanley Ramirez was the most talented player in the game *right now.* This was when he was still with the Marlins, I think. As a Phillies fan, I definitely saw a lot of him back then.

As a sox fan it was cool to see Hanley come back in the twilight of his career, even though he left quite a bit to be desired defensively. He had some big at bats, and it was nice to see it all come full circle for a bit. That being said, the trade was totally worth it for '04 alone.

I was at the Sox game when he hit the walk off in the 15th. Two hour rain delay before the game too. Longest game ever lol.

Tim Lincecum almost had a similar career trajectory. During his first five years with the Giants he won two back to back Cy Youngs in '08 and'09 and a WS ring in '10. He looked every inch a HOF pitcher. But when he lost some edge off his fastball possibly due to the first signs of a hip problem he went into decline and tried changing from a power to a finesse pitching style. He had somewhat comparatively subpar seasons from '11 to '14 but still got two more WS rings. Interestingly enough he had it in him to throw two no hitters in '13 and '14 but he had surgery in '15 to repair his degenerative hip condition which was devastating because much of his power came from that unorthodox windup that puts a lot of stress on his hips. He was out of baseball after '16, but we Giants fans appreciate what he accomplished during the WS years.

It hurt as a 6-9 year old in 06-09 watching Hanley and Rollins put up all star numbers while watching Reyes slowly stop holding a candle in the “best shortstop in the Nl east” conversation. Then in 2011 Beltran became my favorite player

Hanley is the reason why I fell in love with the shortstop position even though his defense wasn’t ideal. I miss watching him play. But overall a great career

that dude was designed to do one thing, and that was be very good at hitting a baseball. such a flawless, pretty swing. his one elite year for the dodgers will always be a huge what-if cuz he was so good it felt like he could carry the team to a world series. it felt like the cardinals knew this too, cuz in the first game of the NLCS they plunked him in the ribs and broke two of them, taking him out of the series. such a shame - him helping us win a WS would've made up for that stupid error that cost kershaw a perfect game.

Baseball has the craziest stat charts. He was only 1 or 2 players between 2008 and 2012 that shaved his face in an upward direction, every other day, from the hours of 8 to 10 am during the month of June, while making toast, in the basement, from sourdough bread, using a refurbished 4 slice, Empire Red KitchenAid toaster!

Definitely one of my favorite players growing up. Always Gave The Braves Fits

Hanley was was one of those "ahead of his time guys" as a Baltimore boy in that east division...I hated when he came up ...but got nothing but respect ⚾💯❤️

Seriously Though he was a guy who played emotionally. Hen he was in a good emotional Space he played well. When he was in a bad space or dealing with adversity He fell apart but still managed to be essentially League average and if you’re career can be measured as above average to top 10….well you Probably did alright.

I loved going to games and seeing him and Uggla hit Teal Monster bombs!

The St. Louis cardinals purposely hit him in the ribs ending an incredible season for Hanley when he played for the dodgers. They were going to win the World Series. They had won 42 out of 50 games and unstoppable

Underpaid in Florida, overpaid in Boston. A similar theme rings there.

In fairness, when he came in, there were already shortstops like ARod and Jeter who finished up with 250-250 career totals (or way, way above, like A-Rod's 696 HR), but they don't count because Jeter hit 63 of his HR in the 90's, while ARod had 118 SB in the 90's and only another 211 after the year 2000. The previously mentioned Jimmy Rollins fit the time frame, was much better defensively, but only had 231 HR(to go with 470 SB, as opposed to Hanley just topping the 250 mark in both categories with 271 and 281). Nomar was another guy who was slowed by injuries that robbed him of his speed and playing time. The truth is, Hanley did not stand out that much based on his results as a SS, I would suggest that in almost any other era, he would have stood out by a wider margin.

As a Marlins fan, Hanley was my favorite player after the D-train derailed. He was tremendous for half a decade then he got super buff and it seems like it had a negative effect. He gained a little power but he seemingly lost everything else :(.

Anyone else miss the old Marlins logo and stadium? I get the they had to move out of that stadium at some point but damn it brings back so many memories for me.

Everyone forgets he hit .265+ with tons of power and could still run a little bit during his last 2 months with Boston

I’m not sure exactly who your source was at 10:31 but there are a lot more than that. A-Rod, Barry and Bobby Bonds each did it 10x, Kirk Gibson, Eric Davis, Mike Cameron, Darryl Strawberry, Andre Dawson, and quite a few more.

As a true Boston fan born and raised in Massachusetts, only my true socks fans will understand this Ramirez he got his career off to a KICK start with the Portland Sea dogs lmfao and he became expandable.

Everyone that watched Hanley play during that time remembers what a beast he was.

That last guy with 5 20/20 seasons since 2000 (Ian Desmond) could make a good video in his own right about how he was a bit better than remembered, if he's remembered at all. Never took a walk, and didn't hit for much average most years, but had solid power and speed and that was his niche. Defense was lacking. Guys like him are a rare breed nowadays, but are honestly kinda fun.

To be a shortstop in MLB you practically have to be an acrobat that’s not afraid to be fired at by a cannon. It’s insanely difficult. Shortstops these days are better than ever.

Dodgers fans remember him for 2 things. The error in Kershaw’s no hitter and his monster 2013. What could’ve been if he didn’t get drilled in game 1 of the NLCS.

Ramírez was clearly on a HOF career path, until he hit 30. Nice age 32 season, but it all fell apart when he got hurt as a 29 year old. Too bad, he was exciting. He made over 159 Million playing baseball, so I hope he is doing well....

As a dodgers fan I thought he was such a great player but I remember him being slow on fielding sometimes. I swear when the cards broke his rib with the ball in the playoffs his career went down hill and so did the world series hopes. Also getting hurt in the baseball classic made me mad. But I loved him as a dodger!

He did change once he was surrounded with more veterans who werent gonna put up with his BS when he went to the Dodgers. And yes, his defense, especially when playing shortstop, was very shaky.

I don’t really accept the line that we are suddenly in an era of historically good short stops. The difference, which is all at the plate, is due to the way teams have devalued the defensive importance of the position. Ramirez is a perfect example. In the past, he would never have played a single game at the position at the MLB level. He would’ve been moved to first base or outfield. That applies to most of the incredible offensive short stops today. The SS golden age is simply the change in priorities. Potentially elite hitters, with that size and power, who are at best adequate, often worse, with the glove, get to play the position. Historically, they had been automatically moved.

First off at his best he was a dynamic player, but the perception is, rightly or wrongly, that he quit trying after he signed that massive contract. Plus he was miscast as a SS. That being said, at his best he was one of the better players in the league.
