@@the1mexicant Exactly, it was also the fact the Astros stayed dominant, while the Cubs fell off. Astros also got Verlander in 17, McCullers showed out in the playoffs, got Greinke later, and the now seeing Valdez, Javier, and Garcia coming into form.

@@the1mexicant I think it’s more that other pitchers stole the spotlight. Remember, Keuchel’s Cy Young season came in 2015 when the Astros returned to the playoffs. He was also on the 2017 team. But since then, Justin Verlander has really been the face of the Astros’ pitching. Since they won their first World Series, he’s been a constant among the many pitching changes the Astros have gone through, not to mention the fact that he’s a Hall of Fame talent. Speaking of Hall of Fame talent, I think that’s another reason as to why Arrieta’s stood out so much. He didn’t just win a Cy Young, win the World Series, and then fall off. He beat two Hall of Fame Dodgers, Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke, to do it. And they were both in their prime at the time. Keuchel’s competition was almost nothing in comparison.

@@Gemnist98 yeah but Kershaw deserved it most that year. I watched maybe 90% of all games that season (thanks to a rotation to Korea) and Kershaw was so great just the whole vibe of watching him take over the game felt so much more than Greinke or Arrieta

This year was the first time since maybe 2019 that the staff stayed healthy because of their 6 man rotation. I’m going to watch the video now

Personal Keuchel anecdote. I'm an Astros fan and went to their spring training complex in the spring of 2018. Caught a ST game and left around the 7th inning. As I was in my rental car leaving the parking lot, this super customized white Mercedes G Wagon rolls past me and I look over and Keuchel is driving it. He was with some lady. I waved at him and he smiled and gave me a peace sign. Pretty neat

Another Keuchel anecdote. He was in the bullpen one game and there was a (NY?) fan letting him have it - telling him how worthless he was and that all pitchers are overpaid. This, however, didn't stop the fan from wanting Keuchel's autograph so he sign it "Thanks for helping to pay my salary."

Keuchel gets more press because of his peak seasons, but the more interesting pitcher of that Astros era to me is Collin McHugh who is kind of a chameleon that continues to reinvent himself as a pitcher throughout his career. He's probably the earliest example of a pitcher that the Astros "unlocked" after teams like the Mets and Rockies gave up on him. He was also one of the earlier example of how pitchers can dramatically improve bit eliminating a pitch in their arsenal, rather than adding a pitch

I agree. Baseball has learned refining your best pitches is the better option. For most of my life the belief was you need more pitches. Look at Javier dominating as a starter with 3 pitches of which he really only uses 2.

@@deathminder9206 same with Chris Sale. His peak was really just playing his slider and fastball off each other. He has a change up and sinker. But neither were utilized much until he was losing his stuff around the injury.

It was never special he never had flashy stuff or good velo he was just a pitch to contact guy who used tricky stuff to induce ground balls and he always played with amazing defense and got mad lucky. I can respect that he was “good” for a few years but never special or cy young worthy

@@Reavezz it was definitely special for that reason. He didn’t have flashy stuff or high velocity and was still able to be the best AL pitcher in 2015. Almost every pitcher that dominates these days does it with elite stuff he was unique in the way that kept hitters on the their heels with elite control and pitch selection. It was special watching a pitcher dominate in a different way than what we’ve become accustomed to.

A lot of Astros fans here, myself included. I remember him being the definitive ace of our team, even when we acquired Verlander. He was incredibly entertaining, and to be blunt, we would not have made the playoffs in 2015 without him. Ultimately, given his regression, we were right to let him go, but it’s still a major shame. I do hope, given his Cy Young and seven-year tenure, that he’s eventually elected into the Astros Hall of Fame.

I think He has a special place in Astros history. He was one of the first signs of something great that was to come. He was another great player along side Altvue that gave us some hope and something to cheer for.

Yeah he ain’t making the hall of fame. Astros hall of fame sure, but hall of fame is out of reach with how the last few seasons erased his peak’s war accumulation. He probably needs 5 seasons of his 2017-2018 form to be a conversation.

I saw Dallas pitch this last season when he was on his AAA run with the Rangers when they came to Sugar Land. After his outing he was there by the Right Field line signing autographs for maybe 30 mins. He's a great guy, and an Astros legend.

The year Keuchel won the Cy Young, you could see the knife edge that he pitched on. He worked on pin point control, keeping the ball down generally, and a slight variety of looks/pitches to keep hitters off balance. If any part of that equation fails, he isn't just no longer a great pitcher, but one would struggle to even stay in the majors. Still, as an Astros fan that one game playoff he pitched against the Yankees was magnificent.

Keuchel mastered hitting the edge of the black, particularly against righty hitters and the sinker then gave him a 1-2 punch that dominated the league. But he never had overpowering velocity and, once you lose that location, you can go downhill pretty fast. I think Jeff Luhnow knew he wasn't going to pay top dollar for a pitcher who barely topped 90 MPH and he became the first in another way - the first of many Astros stars in the 2015-present era who walked in free agency - starting with Keuchel then George Springer, Gerrit Cole and Carlos Correa. The only Astros free agent who made them regret letting the player walk was Charlie Morton.

I don't think they regretted letting Morton walk. Outside of maybe the ALCS in 2020 (I say maybe because that series was weird in an even weirder season), there wasn't really a time he was responsible for their defeat. In 2019 his win against them didn't end up mattering, and in 2021 he broke his leg 3 innings into the only game he pitched against them.

I went to a Space Cowboys minor league game where he pitched against Lance McCullers Jr (who was rehabbing). He got a standing ovation and pitched pretty well

Keuchel was great for us in Houston those couple years..I think if he had stayed in Houston, he would have prolonged his "good years"...feel like when he left, it just changed the dynamic for him all-around. It wasn't the best move for Keuchel to leave!

He throws off speed too much. MLB hitters figured him out and now feast on it. He doesn't strike out much and relies on ground balls for outs..no way he was gonna last long once hitters figured him out

Here's an interesting "what if" video for you. The White Sox had a young outfielder who had power but hit a frustrating .203 for them in 1991. During the winter, the White Sox almost dealt this player to the Astros for Mark Portugal. Instead, they traded him later that winter for George Bell. That player was Sammy Sosa. Imagine what the 1992-2005 Astros could have been with Sosa around Bagwell, Biggio, Caminiti, Berkman, etc.

I am a HUGE Astros fan, I love Keuchel when he was in his prime, now I feel bad for him, I even went to a minor league game to see Mccullers vs Keuchel matchup, and all the fans showed appreciation to Keuchel, even me, he even smiled at the fans as he walked off the mound

I think keuchel’s workload in his breakout seasons got the better of him and as his career lengthened he started to lose the finesse that made him such an outstanding pitcher. Nonetheless as an Astros fan and a as a fan of great facial hair I remember him fondly.

Jolly, you're my favorite MLB content creator. Someone needs to do a deep dive of the INSANE matchup of First basemen in the 1989 NLCS. 2 players, playing the same position, in the same series, absolutely going off.

Even in MLB TheShow I was having problems with his pitches. It's sad to see how he suddenly declined, and I think it could be something in his mental approach.

Yup, you nailed it. I'm glad I saw your post before I said the same thing. You can see the difference in the crispness and sharpness in his pitches.

He’s a lot like Grienke. His stuff lost velocity and just hangs out there for hitters to connect with. But when he was in his prime his stuff was nasty.

Dallas Keuchel is one of the early players that without him the Astros come out very different the other being Jose Altuve which he came up a bit earlier. Now one thing you did forget to mention is he has dominated the Gold glove award at the pitcher spot throughout his career winning several 2014-2016, 2018, and 2021 which is pretty crazy. Now that 2015 run was magical and very rare and it could have gone on if it hadnt been for two guys *cough* *cough* Sipp and Harris who couldnt get an out causing the Royals to come back in the 8th and send it to game 5 and if that hadn;t happened the Astros would have gone to the ALCS and might have gone to the World Series as they were that close to beating that year's world series winner the Royals. Now 2017 was when everything of 2015 came together even better sure there was sign stealing but there was sign stealing before and after that *glares at the Yankees from 2015-2016 and Red Socks for 2018* but even with that the starting pitching was able to limit the dodgers in many games at dodgers stadium which Keuchel, Verlander and McCullers along with other pitchers were able to lead throughout that season or half season for verlander a dominate team though compared to pitching after this year they only got better. I think Keuchel's better days are behind him but he was and still is a very important building block to the Houston Astros.

I do miss Keuchel, but I think if he didn't walk away, we wouldn't have Framber Valdez come up. I think Framber does what Keuchel did for us back then but with more velocity and break. There's some concern that the shift ban will affect his gameplan getting groundouts, but I don't think it'll be as big of a deal as people are making it out to be.

As an Astros fan, it breaks my heart.

I wanna see a video on Felix Hernandez. A dominant pitcher for around a decade with 6 All Star selections, a Cy Young award and a perfect game under his belt. One of the best pitchers of the last 20 years. But over his Seattle Mariners career the run support from the M’s offense was so poor it was unbelievable. As of 2016, Felix had 45 career starts where he averaged 7.0ip and allowed 0 or 1 ER’s and did not pickup the win. He never won 20 games in a season yet a season like 2010 he had 34 starts, 249.2innings pitched, 232k’s, a staggering 2.27era yet he finished with a record of 13-12, didn’t get an All Star selection yet won his only Cy Young. The Mariners never made the playoffs during his 15 seasons in Seattle (not by his fault what so ever) and once Felix injured his throwing elbow and came back without the same velocity in his fastball, his career really took a hit. Sad to see how King Felix’s career came to an end with just how unbelievably dominant he was for a solid decade. I’d love to see u do a video on him. As a lifelong M’s fan, I hold Felix in the highest regards and hope he can somehow make the Hall of Fame

I remember the exact day I was following the 2009 MLB draft and saw his name pop up on the draft ticker. I followed him from short season A ball to the pros. Houston loved him to death.

Got his autograph during the ALCS in 2017 my first ever and what a game it was for him that game. It's sad to see his downfall. It really is.

Yeah he strung them along too long, and thought other teams would sign him to a major contact. When they didn't he sat out to long and lost his stride.

I enjoyed Keuchel while he was with us in Houston. it sucks how his career ended up, you never want to see a guy hit near rock bottom.

Love the content as always, fire! You should do a video on Eric Jokisch, the man needs some love lol and I def think he should have a shot in the league even if its only 2 years more.

He helped usher in the era of dominance that the Astros have still enjoyed in Baseball for almost a decade now.

Keuchel has to be disappointed with how the past couple of seasons have panned out, but we'll always love what he did for us in Houston. I'd be interested to see if his command has fizzled out, since that's what really allowed his softer stuff to play as effectively as it did.

One of the most fun pitchers to watch in his prime when he was in Houston

Dallas Keuchel's career trajectory looks eerily similar to 1976 Cy Young Award winner Randy Jones. He joined a pretty awful San Diego Padres team in 1973 (the same year as some guy named Dave Winfield) and proceeded to lead the to relevance (even if they didn't make the playoffs since in those days, only the division winners got to play postseason ball). He had an awful 1974 leading the league in losses before having back-to-back 20 game winning season in 1975 and 1976. Like Keuchel, Jones was a lefty starter who relied more on guile and control than power pitching. However, Jones never racked up the strikeout numbers like Keuchel. He did have some really good seasons before getting traded to the Mets before the 1981 season. He'd make his last career start on August 10, 1982 against the Cardinals walking three straight batters in the first inning and giving up four runs while retiring one batter. After that he was relegated to mopup work in bullpen.

I'd love to see a story about Caminiti on the Astros and then becoming a Padre and became an MVP and then willingly admitted to doing steroids. Canseco tried to make money off of it when he wrote a book but Cammy just confessed to it. It was crazy to see what he did on the Padres in 96.

As a Braves fan I remember him being signed and after reading about why the signing was so great (at the time) I was like how the F had he not being signed

That A’s “complete game” shutout is wild considering the final score was 5-4 in extra innings

I saw Keuchel start a game for the Rangers last year and after he came out after being shelled he was quoted as saying that he felt good and thought that he had command of all his pitches. Sheesh man! After getting shelled, you shouldn't say that everything is hunky dory but instead say that your command was off and you weren't feeling well.

This is literally my second cousin. Look up the heritage or whatever lmao… but as he’s gotten older it’s been downhill since his prime just like almost every other player. Dallas has been one of my idols since a child, and just as you said he was fantastic for a good while. Not really sure of the point of this video trying to defame his name. But this man is a legend. More humble than I think anybody would be in his position. Check yourself before talking down on someone so ahead of you

I'm 36 years old. It's a strange feeling to watch all the players roughly the same age as me having already peaked in their baseball careers. Now I'm watching them slowly peter out.

I often watch KZread videos on mute with Closed Captions turned on (while listening to music) and I find it hilarious that the Closed Captions misspell Keuchel's name every single time, but never seem to use the exact same misspelling twice.

I have noticed over the past few years the home plate umpires have been shrinking his strike zone. Keuchel is a pitcher that really relies on those corner and "just off the plate" calls. Once those calls dried up he just has not been the same.

Was at his last game as a white Sox(didn't know at the time) and was so angry because I didn't know who was starting until I sat in my seat. We got shafted. Fortunately all that anger went away when right after that we got rid of him.

i think the part where he threw his team under the bus is a large part of being unsigned.

I know it's not the same but growing up there was a friend of mine who was an incredible pitcher, right through high school. Then randomly one day, he lost it. Like literally all of it. So I can see this happening to pros as well.

I was shocked when I saw Price in Blue Jay's uniform.

He started to focus on all the mechanics of his pitching until they all fell apart. Now instead of one complete movement to throw the ball, he throws the ball with every mechanic in mind and it’s not cohesive. Chatter on his mind is responsible for his downfall. It's lefties man, you have to adjust as a lefty specifically for some reason and if you don't you become Kuechal or Corbin once the batters know you're tunnels they just light you up.

His decline began 3 years before the White Sox signed him. That's on the WS front office. His numbers said he'd be bad, not good, not serviceable, bad. They got maybe one decent season out of him.

There's plenty of pitchers who threw more innings than Keuchel and their arms are fine. Why is it that every time some pitcher gets hurt everyone wants to bitch that it's obviously because x number of seasons ago he pitched blah blah blah number of innings? MAYBE if you're talking about a guy who throws 95-100 mph but Keuchel is far from that. In all likelihood his recent struggles are a direct result of something that happened or a change he's made more recently than how many innings he threw several years prior. The sticky stuff ban seems like it may have affected him too, at least based on the timing of his problems.

Jose Lima, too. Sadly, he died at 45 years old

Never forget that in 2019 NLDS, the Braves decided to start Dallas Keuchel and Mike Foltynewicz twice in a 5 game series. To this day, I still don't understand what the fuck Snitker was thinking.

I’m a die hard cubs fan obviously! But, I’m also a die hard Razorback fan in college sports and Keuchel played college ball for my omahogs so I loved when he was so successful in MLB but I hate he’s fell apart now.

I feel like the NYY should give him a shot and try him out for a mi or league deal with upsides and incentive laden guarantees if he makes it to the league and pitches well.

Keuchel is my first and only jersey from the current dynasty. I hated when he went elsewhere, and more so that he fell off the planet.

For me, stories like Keuchel's just throw into contrast even more so the rarity of consistency of ability in the MLB. Keuchel is sort of the rule, not the exception. It's why pitchers like Verlander and Kershaw are legends already even though they're still active. It's incredibly difficult to maintain such levels of dominance and relevance in this sport. And yet another reason why baseball is best.

That difficulty in maintaining dominance exists in all major sports, nothing about it makes baseball special.

In an odd twist he actually had the largest positive ERA (9.20) to FIP (5.52) ratio in the majors last year for any starting pitcher at -3.62

@@unkledoda420 me when I lie. Not saying Keuchel is good but it’s definitely not useless. Its a calculation of things a pitcher can control and leaves out things they can’t

Just as a nats fan could it be that pitchers just can’t pitch 250 innings/ get over used late in the year without messing their consistency in some way, same seemed to happen with Patrick corbin post 2019 got used heavy towards the end of the year especially the playoffs
