The Emu War was started because it was assumed to be an easy political victory but these birds had different ideas. Despite heavy machine gun fire, the emus learned, adapted, and overcame. Joseph Lyons faced pressure to put an end to the whole silly affair. And unfortunately, the towns of Campion and Walgoolan would see their support evaporate as more emus trampled the wheatfields so necessary for living.

    This war clearly shows the superiority of the Emu intel network. They recognized the enemy was counting on a quick victory by overwhelming force, realized that this was a strategy Napoleon had used, gathered intelligence on Napoleon’s own tactics and victories and implemented a strategy that prevented such a victory: “When they show up, we’ll run away.” Genius!

    You know, putting the absurdity of men fighting emus aside, this is actually a textbook example of how a powerful nation loses a war against a technologically inferior foe: 1. Constantly underestimating the enemy; 2. Over-reliance upon rare & expensive technology; 3. An inflexible command structure; 4. Comparative lack of mobility; 5. Comparative lack of recruitment; 6. Lack of adequate funding; 7. Failure to press on in the face of of set-backs; 8. The end of a valid strategic goal in maintaining the war. The running gag is that "And the Cassowaries stayed neutral" (google them, they're basically velociraptors). But we weren't taught about it in school are unlikely to get a homegrown series of this depth. Especially one that's so ready to call us on our racist history (seriously, there was an immigration policy called the White Australia Policy and a referendum held to see if everyone could agree that our indigenous folk were even people and not "local fauna"). Those machine guns were great for trench warfare since you needed to cut down an advancing enemy or pin them down for your advance. Emus had no territory to protect and didn't shoot back. They just ran away at 30mph. Unless they had the manpower to defend every source of food and/or water to starve the emus out, the birds could just leave. High bounties would probably be more useful or perhaps they could use the birds as a "training exercise" for the military. Is using bullets on emus any worse than using them on a rifle range?

  • @kevingriffith6011

    @kevingriffith6011

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think the only real long term solution to this issue would be to give these communities the ability to defend themselves... if the birds run away when you start shooting, the machine gun should be able to keep them out. Naturally, that opens an entirely different can of worms when it comes to loaning military-grade equipment to civilians, though, not to mention cost of ammunition. (They're just farmers, after all. I don't think they could afford to keep the guns loaded) Really the best solution would be "Just build a better wall" but that's just not exciting.

  • @andrewsuryali8540

    @andrewsuryali8540

    2 жыл бұрын

    As already pointed out in the first episode, the machine guns were brought in because bounties and individual marksmen didn't work. People tend to underestimate how catastrophic the emu plague was due to the memes and because similar wildlife outbreaks elsewhere have been much easier to deal with. Meredith's initial strategy was actually very well thought out and was EXACTLY the kind of strategy you would have used to deal with usual wildlife outbreaks like deer or boars in, say, North America. The reason why it didn't work is because NOWHERE in the Australian outback has there ever been enough human population density to corral 20k emus the way North American farmers and hunters could with their local wildlife. Australian population today is 26 million occupying 3 goddamn million square miles.

  • @fakjbf3129

    @@andrewsuryali8540 Individual marksmen weren't working when they were relying on farmers and hunters. I wonder how it would have fared if they had sent a few dozen snipers to help coordinate. if they had sent say 20 marksmen and they were each able to take down 2 emus a day, that right there would have been more effective in the long run. And since you could just pick emus off as you went instead of having to spend time corralling large numbers of them together, I doubt they could have performed worse than the plan they actually used. The real question is whether that increased effectiveness would actually have made a difference or it still wouldn't have been enough.

    Birds are basically dinosaurs. Obviously, emus evolved to take on "bullets" with their thick hide in an abstract sense. Not including human populations targeting them with arrows but also if they run 30mph their predators must reach a similar speed to attack. The claws, fangs, and talons of their opponents are probably the size of high caliber bullets, and the force when moving really fast concentrated to a point like a bullet tip or a fang would probably be similar.

    The ending of the emu war was controversial, since Australia had no casualties compared to the emu’s 1000 losses of troops. However, the emu army was far greater in size compared to Australia’s forces and never even shown signs of weakening throughout the battles. In the end, though Australia claimed victory in the war, the emu legions never stopped their campaign so it felt more like a masked surrender by the Australians. Which is why I considered the great emu war to have been won by the emus.
