The Grand Bazaar: Munchies Guide To Tehran (Part 1/3)

Ойын-сауық

When it comes to Tehran, it's impossible to avoid politics and easy to overlook the Iranian city's thriving culinary scene. In our first installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, our host Gelareh Kiazand introduces us to the bustling street food offerings in the city.
We begin our journey at the capital city's Grand Bazaar, since that's where commodities first arrive. Gelareh beelines for the market's food stands, where she samples dried fruits and nuts while waiting out the line at Moslem Restaurant, frequented by up to 5,000 kebab connoisseurs daily-well worth it for her favorite tah chin. At the more modest and bygone Tajrish Bazaar, she's the proverbial kid in a candy store, wading through copper and carpet vendors in search of sweet snacks, such as grape molasses and lavasak (fruit leather).

    I don't mean to start an argument but Iran has a greater right o feel hostile against the US. Even the Ayatollah said he doesn't want conflict, but he feels that US spews bullshit when it comes to diplomacy. He's right on both arguments. There shouldn't be conflict between us.

    Unfortunately I can't make a video for you. But I'll try and offer some (hopefully) helpful information. Keep in mind I leave tomorrow for Turkey, and now will not be in Iran till the 4th of Dec so will definitely be more helpful after the trip. Prepare for lots of reading... - In terms of getting a VISA, Australians can fortunately purchase a 15 day tourism VISA at the airport on arrival, this can be extended. To guarantee your VISA I am under the impression you need evidence of both a return ticket and health insurance. - I will be travelling around Europe after Iran, so definitely packed some warm clothes. Tehran and Esfahan where I will be spending most of my time seem to get pretty cold anyway, so not much difference. I'm taking thermals, a jacket made with down (takes up very little room), scarf, beanies and gloves. Good pair of thick shoes, but otherwise just a whole lot of layers, not too much different to what I would normally wear. - Getting around Iran seems pretty simple. I have been told (if arriving in Tehran and travelling elsewhere) to go the Northern Tehran Bus terminal, because I believe this is were the good busses (TV, food service etc) are found. Regular services so you won't have to book ahead. Ridiculously cheap as well, less than $10aud for a 6 hour bus ride. Tehran itself looks to have an extensive Metro system, and other smaller cities have a bunch of underground lines as well, so I don't imagine getting around will be too hard. - Finding relatively decent, but cheap accommodation for a backpacker was probably the hardest thing. In Esfahan I have decided to splash out and stay just outside Imam Square. Tehran there are a lot of big hotels, but I think finding the smaller boutique hotels is going to be better. Hopefully I will get better tips of where to go and what to see. Also I was told the North of Tehran is probably the 'nicer' area. Foreign tourists seem to get charged more for the same room though, but considering the exchange rate its not too big of an issue at the moment. - Currency exchange is a little difficult because VISA and Mastercard is not accepted. Basically I will have to exchange my euro into Rial (considering inflation its a lot of notes), then hopefully will find a card which I can preload with funds. Will probably take me a while to figure our the Rial/Toman system. I think 1 Toman is 10 Rial? - Tehran seems to have a lot more to offer than the tourist books suggest. Places like Niavaran, Velanjak and the Tehran Book Garden seem rarely mentioned but look pretty amazing. Esfahan I had to kind of search out information of Atashgah and the Fire Temple. I am doing this by independent research though, not through a tour company so maybe I just need to improve my googling skills. Anyway, hopefully that was some assistance. I'm sure I will be much more help in 3 weeks time. Loftan kami sabr konin (hopefully that made sense haha) Anybody from Iran, feel free to correct me on any of this information.

    See kids, this is why you shouldn't just sit on your couch and listen to what CNN and Fox try to feed you. When you actually go out and meet folks from other countries and cultures, you'd quickly realize that they're just like you. Sure, there might be some differences but on the whole, there are so much more similarities, people are just people.

    EH CBunny yes but the customs of different countries within the Middle East vary quite a bit, in a country like Saudi Arabia women have very few rights, but Pakistan and Turkey have had more female heads of state than the US. Iranian women are not nearly as bad off as in SA, but they still have work to do and the Islamic Revolution certainly didn't help. I'm no expert, just trying to explain.

    "The Truth". I don't understand nor appreciate a country which continually violates human rights. Iranian politics don't need to be understood, they need to be changed on a long term basis. As long as Iran is playing the game of old Persia, no sanctions or international controls will be lifted. And no Iran is not the victim of a jewish world conspiracy, the former president Ahmadinejad managed to isolate his country on his own and by the help of the Mullahs.

  • @rhoesacesrheomithres2119

    @rhoesacesrheomithres2119

    Wira Hardiprakoso You see in northern Iran especially Tehran during winter it is comparable I'd say with Switzerland in climate feeling. It may go as low as -14 degrees Celsius in winter (November end, December, January, February) though on average it'll stay around 0 to - 1 most day's I think. Most people wrongly presume Iran is a desert country due to it being located in the Near east, it's not. Infact Iran has what you could call four seasons at the same time which makes it unique in climate experience. For e.g in the extreme south near Persian gulf and Yazd (city) or the Dasht-e Kavir and Dasht-e Lut deserts, it'll reach 45 - 50+ degrees Celsius at times, this heat is different than Tropical style heat and humidity, so it may or may not be even too hot for you, whilst in the central and north eastern parts you can experience a milder Autumn type climate, whilst also in the northern extremities region near Caspian sea & plain or "shomal Iran" and "Noshahr", it's refreshing and crispish cool in nature comparable to Spring...where Tehrani people go up to, to escape heat and congestion especially in summer to relax and enjoy fresh air. Iran is a beguiling country that has a myriad of sights to see and things to do with many unique but unfortunately threatened species, animals e.g Persian Leopard / mountain lions and Persian Lion *which is extinct, also beautiful bird types as well.
