    I came to this video because me and my boyfriend were just randomly talking about spider silk because he was outside watering our plants and there was a big black widow web in the corner of our patio. It reminded him of something he saw on the internet (this video) and he told me to look up lambs that are genetically engineered to produce spider silk. So in my head I was picturing lambs with spider web wool. And then I realized how tight the name "Spiderlamb" was and started singing the "Spiderlamb song" But now that I see they are goats, I've elaborated on the song, haha. "Spiderlamb, spiderlamb. Does whatever a spiderlamb does Instead of wool, they grow out silk. Come to find out, it's in their milk. Oh nope! And they're actually goats. "

  • @RayPoreon

    @RayPoreon

    8 жыл бұрын

    Brian Smith To get the spiders milk, they needed to change only one gene. Each gene is the blueprint for a single protein, which means changing one gene does nothing but it's direct effect(the protein). And bear in mind that most proteins are just diferent combinations of the same element, so the goats already have the required materials to make silk. Oh, and the silk is made of this protein. And since my computer restarted while I was writing my other reply to you, I'll just do it here. These "consequences" only happen in movies. Scientists are able to completely map out the effects of adding or splicing certain genes before they do it. But since you think your top shelf quality when it comes to this, why don't you tell me the exact implications to expect from this, instead of using vague warnings.

    @NeoDragoN7676 the spider they took the gene from produced silk stronger than kevlar. Of course, this is very useful. But the spiders couldn't produce enough of it for proper manufacture of anything useful. Hence, put the gene into a larger animal that can produce it in larger quantities. There's another video from bbc explaining it.

    Anyone saying that "Fucking with nature will fuck us", you're right. In some cases. For instance due to mass genetic mutation the banana may go extinct in the next 50 years. However in this specific case, there is no danger. In this case we are creating a sub species of the animal, rather than mutating every goat in the world. If this flock of goats were to die off, then no big deal. We'd still have goats. All I'm really trying to say is that genetic augmentation is the future. And If you can't deal with that, that makes you the horse carriage driver when the cars came around.

    How about all the GMOs that are making the bees become extinct? More specifically corn, which they believe is the primary (not only source mind you) source for bees becoming extinct... And when the bees go my friend and there is no more pollination, will your science god creation little nano bots with cute little black and yellow jackets to go around pollinating our crops? I sure hope so but ummm I really doubt it. If you cannot see the harsh consequences that are on the horizon for us as a species as a result of us playing God... than you are really more of an intellectual than I had originally gathered from your comments. As in you only use the intellect side of your brain and your right brain which harbors wisdom, reason (spiritual reason not "logic" as most people now a days erroneously defer to), and morality... is completely dormant. People like you see us as advancing with technology but in reality we are going head first into the biggest dark age this planet has ever seen. We as a society are nothing but a bunch of drooling phone zombies that stare into a screen of pretty little lights most of the day and can't memorize 3 important phone numbers if our lives depended on it ...and it very well could. It's people like you that are cheer-leading technology all the way into George Orwell 1984 with phones that record everything you do, cameras on every street corner and an ever present ever growing police state that are violating all our human rights every fucking day while you sit around not doing a fuck thing but saying how great all this shit is.... Actually there are many transgenic species out there in labs (and farm plots) around the world, anyone remember the glow-in-the-dark mice? Part jellyfish part mouse, and the most common transgenic plant is so-called 'golden rice' just ordinary rice with the code for beta-carotene (what makes carrots orange) spliced into it, but none of this is anything to be concerned about, technically it could happen in nature by evolutionary mutation (it just hasn't yet) As for playing God... someone has to..

    The whole idea of "playing god" is ridiculous. If you believe in the bible (I don't but hey let's just say it's true), then you must believe that God made us in his image, and therefore gave us the power of creation. Therefore God completely condones us using genetic engineering to improve species.

    The sheer ignorance and fear-mongering in the comments is both amusing, and just insulting. The know-how for enabling goats to produce spider silk proteins in their milk via genetic modification, has existed since 2000. And the milk has to be processed to actually separate the usable proteins from the rest of the milk, regardless; prior to processing, the milk looks and tastes no different than ordinary goat's milk. Genetic modification on this level, is neither 'creating life', nor 'playing god'. For that matter, we as a species have done a form of genetic modification for as long as we've had domestic animals: It's called 'selective breeding'.

    The owner of those goats is an idiot.......saying that those goats are normal goats. Normal goats don't have spider genes in them. Whenever these genetically altered goats/animals in some way or the other gets out and get mingled with the genetically pure ones mates, the owner or owners are going to have their animals taken away from them. Because the company that is responsible for GMO animals are going to say they belong to them and law is going to back them up. They are not going care or sympathize with the farmer or farmers who had their animals polluted with the inferior GMO animals. I see a whole bunch of problems that genetically altering plants, animals and even human beings is going bring. Man has a proclivity to add more problems to what they already have, then solving the ones they already have......greed and stupidity leads to that.
