The GMC Canyon AT4 is the BEST Riding Light Pickup Truck // GMC Canyon AT4 REVIEW

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The GMC Canyon has been around for a while, and it's always been a solid truck. In fact, when people ask me about my favorite light duty pickup trucks, I generally recommend the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon for general truck usage. But the Canyon and Colorado are getting older while the Nissan Frontier is brand new. How do they stack up against a refreshed Frontier, the legendary Toyota Tacoma, and the sad sack Ford Ranger? Does adding AT4 trim to the GMC Canyon help its chances? I think it does, but it's not perfect...

I think there needs to be a drinking game for how many times a reviewer of this truck laments about there being a key, or that it's not laden with LEDs... Really appreciate the comprehensive explanation on the handling though; nailed it. The suggestion that this truck's behaviours, capabilities and overall packaging make it worth the price are exactly why I bought mine, and I love it. As far as the key goes, I'm thankful to have one, especially considering the instances of people getting their cars stolen so easily with pushbutton systems. The button on the door handles- meh. I don't miss what I've never had. Hard plastics are durable to me and as long as they clean easily and don't crack, I don't mind them. LED headlights piss me off on cars because they're usually flickering. Was always a treat to have a 4Runner in the mirror of my hatchback buzzing away in my peripheral vision. As for the rest of the lights, I'll take a $5 bulb replacement over a $500-700 assembly to get my tail lights working again. (And they DO die, I see burnt out LEDs on cars all the time ) To each his own of course, but I chuckled at the end when after singing the praises of what I consider to be the most important parts of a truck, and how it out-did all the competition, he still favoured the Tacoma lol.

Nice looking Canyon for sure in this trim, I dig it. It is time for these trucks to be updated though, they came out in '16 and not much as changed. I expect the interior will get a major overhaul to be more like the full size trucks for the '23 model year redesign. Two unique configurations available with the GM Twins. The 2.8 diesel and a 4 door crew cab with a long box. I have a '17 Canyon 4x4 that with the 2.8 diesel and crew cab / long box, and it is awesome, especially on long highway runs where it is relaxed as can be, riding smoothly with it's extra foot of wheelbase, staying in 6th gear almost no matter what, and averaging around 34 MPG at cruise. GM is the only maker that offers the diesel and a crew cab long box configuration in a midsize truck. It also tows great, barely noticing a 4,500 pound travel trailer, and when cruise is enabled, it holds it's speed dead on regardless of hills, etc. Turbo diesel torque will do that for you. Word is the 2.7 turbo 4 with a 10 speed will be the only engine choice for '23. Fair enough I suppose as the 2.7 should be sweet indeed and very responsive, but I dig the effortless and efficient small diesel vibe in a midsize truck. Fortunately I bought mine in '17 way before current market nuttiness and inflation set in. Local dealers have offered me what I paid for it 5 years and 60,000 miles ago. No dice, they are gonna have to pry my diesel Canyon from my clutching hands.

That's a great endorsement for the diesel powertrain, and I think you're absolutely on to something. I really enjoyed the diesel Sierra AT4, and it makes WAY more sense than the glorious 6.2 liter V8. I'd do the same: hold on to that truck for a long time to come. Thanks for watching!

I agree that the GMC styling is superior, with both large and small trucks. The Sierra is my favorite full-sized pickup from a style standpoint, and I think the Canyon looks pretty great like this. Ride quality is unquestionably better on the GM products, but the tech is going to have to catch up. The new Frontier (review coming soon) gives you a LOT for the money, far more than GM and Toyota. (I'm ignoring the Ford Ranger because everyone should ignore the Ford Ranger.) Thanks for watching!

I have a new 2022 Elevation trim and love it. I do wish GMC would have added more accessories as standard. The Wireless phone charger, lane change warning system that sensors if a car is there. Fog lights as part of the daytime running lights. Last the GMC logo bed liner would be nice to have. Other wise it's an awesome truck well worth the money.

I went with the elevation crew cab short box..... satin metallic grey, blacked out logo's, exhaust tip and spray in bed liner.. ordered all the skid plates and inch level took off the chin....... so far so good. just need rocker protection and tires... but not a rush it's new and the off road stuff I do is to get to camps and stuff so path of least resistance. I'm happy with it so far no real complaints I like simplicity... I learned that from my car sometimes all the extra tech... looks cool but is annoying in practical use and really at the end of the day... does nothing.

The 2WD versions of the GM midsize twins are demonstrably faster, both off the line and in passing than the 4x4’s. The power to weight ratio is better and they feel more responsive with throttle tip in and handling. I should know, I’ve got a 22’ Canyon 2WD and the wife has a Colorado 4x4!

The game is definitely changing with these new little pick up trucks coming out , i agree that drivability is key when it comes to these trucks and the off-roading packages , which the Maverick clearly lacks , but the one thing i can say is i also agree that these trucks are very pricy and not enough luxury , for the price of the Maverick and the interior of the lariat luxury package i haven’t seen a nicer interior in these smaller trucks than the lariat luxury package Maverick in my opinion, i wish the Maverick had the capability this canyon had or the trd pro but I’m ok with that because of all the features the Mav has.

Needs LED headlights, current ones are weak, very weak. I have a 19 Colorado Z-71 with V-6. I have to say, it's fast off the line. Sure, it needs some updates, but as a truck it works. I will look at the 2023 as long as it has LEDS, otherwise it's Ranger time.

Yeah, LEDs need to really come standard on most cars. The tech has democratized out enough that it's no longer expensive. I assume you mean the upcoming Ranger, which looks interesting. I would say yes and no. The key is pretty offensive at the price (and in 2022), but the rest of the tech like the infotainment is as good or better than most other offerings in the segment. The Tacoma is rocking Toyota's outdated infotainment and the Nissan's is equal but not necessarily better. Nothing rides like the Canyon, so I think that offsets the whole key thing, but it's not as generally nice as the Frontier or as capable as the Tacoma. Thanks for watching!

There getting to the 50,000 because people want the touch to start, keyless entry, blah blah blah.. plastic inside of a work truck won’t rip like leather. If you want to control the AC, why do you want to page through the touch screen just to get to those options? Would rather be able to push a physical button to get the defogger in a hurry rather than being at a light and paging through just for the light to turn green and you haven’t even got to the page yet. If people opted for less tech, it would bring the entire lineup down in cost. The more options you have, the more you want them and the more you get charged.

i have the gmc canyon - 2021...the engine and suspension is solid for sure. it has an aggressive exterior style and design, and all the bells and whistles. But man the interior is boring - like the knobs look like they came from a 70's stove- oven, and the seating is just cheap as crap. It's annoying how GM goes all out in certain areas, and then just drops the ball...like no lumbar support for the seats, even rocks behind the seat lining would be nice. The seat handles feel like they mailed them to me, and my grandmother installed them. The seat texture reminds me of a john deere lawn tractor, the dashboard gives me the impression they used an Atari motherboard. I love my canyon but come on GM....an obsession to detail is so important.

It’s a truck! It does what it needs to do, haul stuff and people. I don’t care about push button crap, I don’t care if the cell phone charger doesn’t quite fit my phone. My iPhone 13 pro still charges in it slightly sideways. We have gotten so stupid spoiled over tech crap… omg no matter what tech crap goes in a truck or car, it’s already outdated plus it’s more of a distraction to the driver. I buy a truck to be a truck, keep it simple, 4x4 and gets the job done when I need it to. In fact, the best truck I own is my 1969 C10… yes I currently own a ZR2. I love the old school, why because it works. If a car or truck is turned down because of lack of tech crap, that’s a shame… people forget the bones on the vehicle and what really matters…..

I mean, I get the thinking, but… this is an expensive truck. I don’t think some of the options or features it’s lacking are acceptable at that price. For those wanting simplicity, there are ways to spec a truck to get the most functionality for the minimum price, but once you cross $40k, I think things like push button start and a phone charger that actually fits modern phones are not a big ask (nor are they the kinds of tech that will break). Same exact price as what I paid for my 2022 blue crush Taco TrD sport 4x4. But come on man, that interior is beyond bad. No LEDs, and may be GM has fixed their 8 speed transmission issues with new transmission fluid. But come on NA, no ten speed. Plastic fantastic. DI engine. Pass. Taco for life.

  • @jax1079

    @jax1079

    2 жыл бұрын

But look at your criticisms: plastic interior? Taco has an incredibly pasticky interior, just a little better styled. Transmission complaints? The eight speed in the Canyon exhibits far superior tuning than the six speed in the Taco (you can go manual in the Taco but let's be real with what most buyers opt for.) Dependability? Well, the Taco has a great reputation... but if you start digging into the data you'll find a lot of small trucks are more or less reliable over time. Ride quality and handling? GM destroys the Taco. Look, I even said in the video were it my money I'd probably buy a Taco TRD Pro, but to claim blanket superiority (especially in the face of the new Frontier, review coming soon), just isn't the case anymore. Thanks for watching!

@@jax1079 Taco plastics may be hard. Definitely not plush interior. But it is plastic made of granite. I double guarantee you those Taco plastics pass the test of time ten years from now, the Chevy plastic will be deformed by heat of Georgia sun if not have cracked dashboard. And the paint will be delaminated. I take some gear hunting on highway for Taco over erratic shifting 8 speed GM crap any day which shakes like a paint shaker when stopping from high acceleration. As for ride, my Taco's ride is good enough. It is a truck, if you want soft, then go get a front wheel drive CUV.
