The genius of Marie Curie - Shohini Ghose

View full lesson: ed.ted.com/lessons/the-genius-...
Marie Skłodowska Curie’s revolutionary research laid the groundwork for our understanding of physics and chemistry, blazing trails in oncology, technology, medicine, and nuclear physics, to name a few. But what did she actually do? Shohini Ghose expounds on some of Marie Skłodowska Curie’s most revolutionary discoveries.
Lesson by Shohini Ghose, animation by Anna Nowakowska.

    No, not the best. I'm not sure what you based that on, I know it's definitely not based on any quantitative comparison (e.g. we could consider the total bits of information as possessed by the potential author's papers, or, the total bits of information of papers of which cites the original, for example etc.). There are much, much bigger giants in the history of scientists and mathematicians, including John von Neumann, Einstein and Gottfried, considering we are blind to sex. Of course, the sex inequality may change in the future, and I'm sure many of the more liberal, secular historical figures may welcome sex equality in such fields. However, what you state is absolutely, completely not true, and does not respect the true geniuses of the mentioned few respectively.

  • @zizo0ditto1989

    @zizo0ditto1989

    7 жыл бұрын

    theorist199729 Alright since we're doing this, I must first start by saying that if you take everything everyone says on the internet to the letter, you're gonna have a bad time. On another note though, the geniuses you mentioned though gargantuan in their fields, were not made to endure as many troubles as she has. Of course, there are better scientists out there, I don't deny it but her will and courage inspire more than any other, hence the "perseverance" in my comment. Makes sense?

  • @scahsaint6249

    @scahsaint6249

    Abdel aziz habiba So, perseverance is the reason why she is the "best." If that's the case, then anyone who perservered can be the "best." Clearly, that would qualify anyone even outside of science because those qualities can be applied in any facet of life. So, in essence the only "best" out there is entirely in the realm of subjectivity for each person. Of course, one must not take your comment too literally.

  • @FreestateofOkondor

    @FreestateofOkondor

    And we shouldn't be blind to sex. Especially not when comparing historical figures. Neither Einstein, nor von Neumann nor (I think you meant) Leibniz had to endure as much as Marie Curie. All of them were highly respected in their fields while Curie had to listen to scores of men talking about how she was unfit to do science because she was a woman (despite her two nobel prizes). Interestingly, Einstein took her side and defended her. Abdel aziz habiba was talking about good role models. Von Neumann is estimated to have had an IQ of 250, clearly not so much a "role model" as a "guy you could never hope to be". Curie showed perseverance and a strong will to achieve despite all odds, despite the fact that society conspired against her. In that sense, she definitely is a better role model even if you could agree on who was more important than her. Btw: The only one in your list that is arguably "greater" is Einstein. Curie's discoveries have proven to be more important for the 20th century than von Neumann's or even Leibniz's.

    That's because the unit of measurement for radiation count is defined by Becquerel, hence the unit of which was named after him. As you go deeper in physics, functions become much more complex into probability density functions. I'm not sure which level you are at, but the simplest would consider the exponential function of which relates radiation activity to a constant as derived from calculus. Marie Curie does not have a degree in mathematics, it is highly reasonable to assume her mathematics is not strong. Mathematics is usually the limiting factor, strong mathematics is usually required in order to establish predictable relationships between variables and constants as defined. You'd find that it is the people with mathematics that contribute the most in science.

    -here's a piece of fiction i wrote just now inspired by this comment and its replies haha, hope its not too bad, sorry if there's typos- almost 2 centuries has passed, and your family tree has sprouted renowned geniuses of the world. your great great great grandparents, their children, their children's children and so on have won nobel piece prizes of their own. then your parents had you. you must continue to carry the honour of your heritage, you're the last branch of the tree they have worked so hard on keeping alive. the whole world has its eyes on you. your heart palpitates faster, your lungs start running out of air, your chest feels tight and your head alarmingly light. you're having a panic attack. _'I messed up.'_ you thought, as you clutch the piece of paper that contain the big bold letters, *[REJECTED]* you look down below you, eyes losing focus on the vehicles that pass by and people that seem like ants from your view. up on the 40th floor, there you stand. counting your last seconds and breathing your last breath. is this how it's going to end? _fate is so cruel._

    Few mistakes. 0:35 Marie couldn't study because she couldn't afford it in first place. She worked in occupied Poland to pay for her sister education in Paris. Even wealthy Poles didn't want to study at Russian Imperial University (Russian language, Russian professors and students). This was due to boycott of the university by Polish students Why you didn't mention that part of her life? - "She taught country children to read, write and count; This activity was forbidden and severely punished by the Russian authorities." 0:45 Flying University - The purpose of this was to provide Polish youth with an opportunity for an education within the framework of traditional Polish scholarship, when that collided with the ideology of the Russian authorities. It means that it was the only higher educational institution that provided education in Polish language by Polish professors in Poland occupied by Russia. 01:19 She returned to Warsaw to visit her family but she was denied a place at Jagiellonian University in Kraków occupied by Austria. And Warsaw is not Kraków ;) Despite these few minor mistakes you did great job!

    It's a pity I have to explain it every time that Maria Curie was a Polish woman, that was just working and living in France because of the difficulties, lack of opportunities in Poland of her time and Russian occupation. Especially because she was the best woman scientist ever. It's similar with the pianist and composer Fryderyk Chopin, but he had at least a French father so it doesn't hurt that much. I hope, thank to your video, more and more people will know about the truth. So I'm waiting now for a video about Chopin :D

    @@NOWUNITEDUPDATES Actually she is Marie Sklodowska-Curie as she used her double-barrelled surname in her official appearances and in her official mail. She changed her first name from Maria to Marie when she moved to France at the age of 24.

    Why they would dislike a video about history and a really well done one? If they don't like history they wouldn't even enter the video. It makes no sense

    I recently watched NatGeo's documentary on Einstein called "Genius". It had a scene which so abstractly contrasted the relation between Marie and Pierre Curie with Albert Einstein and his wife Mileva Marich. Where on one side Pierre protested when the Nobel Committee did not acknowlege his wife's work with him and rejected to accept the Nobel, on the other side Einstein who got so much help with Maths for his paper on Special Relativity, did not even think to put his wife's name as an acknowledgement, who just lost all her opportunities to become a physicist because of their child and housework. She later got into depression and became so angsty. The series truly changed my perspective towards the scientific era of 20th century.

    Great job, Shohini! I love everything Genius and Marie Curie's life is no exception. She found a way when it was far more difficult and dangerous than it is today and changed the world through her efforts. I have Asperger's Syndrome and I'm trying to do my part as well. I advocate for those on the Autism Spectrum, was on the Mensa World Journal's July 2016 cover and was honored in Michigan's House of Representatives for winning a global election to become the World Genius Directory's 2016 Genius of the Year for America. You have a real gift for educating and entertaining at the same time with great content and surprising brevity. Keep up the great work!!!

    @@mihir1181 well if you are doing a video on specific historical person - it would be nice to at least pronounce their name properly. It's not discrimination - it's a level of respect to the person. And I mean - they at least included her full name, so some respects are there (cause Skłodowska-Curie did a lot to point out her heritage to help Poland go back on maps), and I am also just mostly joking (which I thought was obvious from the form I used in my OC).

    Yeah, especially Skłodowska isn't hard to say for English speakers: skwo-dov-ska. But ok, not big deal. Especially I would totally understand not pronouncing correctly "Trzuszczyński"
