The woman who stared at the sun - Alex Gendler

Get to know the legacy of Hisako Koyama, whose drawings of the sun’s surface helped scientists reconstruct 400 years of sunspot activity.
--
In 1944, amateur astronomer Hisako Koyama’s latest endeavor was sketching the sun’s shifting surface. She spent weeks angling her telescope towards the sun and tracking every change she saw with drawings. Little did she know, these drawings were the start of one of the most important records of solar activity in human history. Alex Gendler details the incredible legacy of Koyama's work.

Observation can be everything for science, it was and still is There are a lot of autodidacts like her if u could say so. Even Michael Faraday was one of them, living the science is what I would call it. No formal documents will bring u the opportunity to observate like her, it's the dedication in science and informations about everything (just my opinion)

WOW. This is an incredible story. Not only the dedication but how she created her own job by making a contribution. That's what it comes down to right? Making a contribution :) I would never even think to do this during a lockdown or honestly ever. This is the best "optimize the time" story I have ever heard. Ms. Koyama was Brave, diligent, and sharp as the sun's rays!

I remember having 'staring at the sun' contests with my friend on the bus ride from school to home. Nothing really happened to us, we did not go blind or anything. The longer we stared at it, we noticed dark spots dancing and it did look like butterflies. I was really amazed to see this video, it explained a lot!

At about 1:20 or so, you said that 2 oxygen molecules get fused to form helium. That's not possible for at least a few reasons. One, molecules don't fuse, nuclei do. Two, fusing two oxygen nuclei together simply can't produce helium, they're to heavy. Three, the sun's core simply not hot enough. But do you know what it is hot enough to fuse? Two hydrogen nuclei into helium. Cheers!
