A day in the life of the oracle of Delphi - Mark Robinson

Follow Aristonike, an Oracle-in-training in Delphi, as she studies to become the Pythia and communicate Apollo’s will and prophecies.
--
As the sun rises over Delphi in 500 BCE, Aristonike hurries to the temple of Apollo where a single oracle known as the Pythia communicates Apollo’s will. Reserved only for women, this is the most important job in the city- and one that Aristonike will soon have to take on if city council officials decide she meets their standards. Mark Robinson outlines a day in the life of an Oracle-in-training.

The truth about the Oracle's insight is that her chamber was situated above a sulfer deposit. The fumes would rise into the chamber, and the oracle would breathe them in, causing some hallucinogenic properties. Much of what the Oracle would say would be gibberish, and her interpreters would repeat these insights in more comprehensible Greek.

I'm not sure that theory of the sulfer deposit is proven - apparently, the "explanation of a chasm that emitted gas is not seen in the source material until the first century BC. This allusion seems to appear in the later sources, many of which were written by Christians who aimed to dismiss 'pagan' rituals and traditions such as the Oracle." Not saying the Oracle wasn't high on something, though xD

I've seen some people claim it was just "winging it" but this overlooks the craziest part. Some other prophetic gods, such as Dionysus, communicated through "ritual insanity" which involved getting drunk and thrashing around. The Pythia, however, would speak in perfect hexametrical verse when giving her prophecies. That still blows my mind when I think about it!

It's strange thinking of "ancient Greek religion" as a confusion of ancient stories, superstitions, and a myriad of rituals multiplied by hundreds (if not thousands) of _little cultures,_ but they all had some aspects that kept them spiritually unified, so much so that their religion could resemble modern organized faiths.

The idea of consulting an oracle has always been part of human history and continues with us today. We all like guidance and many of us wish someone would tell us what to do. Some people speak to therapists, some turn to more mystical methods and many more turn to friends and family. We all crave guidance and that has never changed and will never change.
