small correction, I think GM did see the EV revolution coming in 1996 with the EV1, it was so popular with the folks who leased the vehicle they refused to sell them after the lease expired and chose instead to crush them all. They saw the future and chose to bury their corporate heads in the sand.

The EV1 was a compliance vehicle, they made it because they had to, which is why they leased, recalled and crushed them.

@@davidj.kleinsasser8673 Yes you are right GM considered it a compliance vehicle, but that is not a reason to crush them after the lease. How many manufacturers crush vehicles when they come off lease? GM knew the EV1 was popular with the customers who drove them, but wanted nothing to do with supporting a potential competing technology to their ICE fleet. Short term profits overrode long term vision and viability for the future.

I was born in 1950. I get exactly what you're talking about. My grandfather was born in 1900, he saw the first mass produced cars, airplanes, jets, and men on the moon. He passed in 1994. Not a bad life. My mom, his daughter, passed in 2022, at 98. I plan to be here a while more and enjoy what I can. Beta was much better quality than VHS, but you couldn't record with it. VHS filled that need.

In 1986 I drove across the country with my family. We had a small station wagon, (remember those), and we towed a U-Haul cube trailer. I was thrilled to have twenty-five miles to the gallon. This was almost as much as mileage without the trailer. Gas trucks do lose range when towing, as do electric cars. More weight to carry will cost more fuel use if your vehicle is heavier than normal if you're towing.

The reason VHS won out was because of home recordings FYI

11:23 a very important lesson here, how AT&T could have had a mindset for increasing utility of their products the way Elon Musk wants to increase the utility of Tesla’s EVs, could have put AT&T in a dominant position today. The increasing of utility mindset can overcome the lack of creativity among people when dealing with innovation as it provides clearer goals. AT&T probably ran out of ideas after focusing so much on the video phone technology that they didn’t think who could best benefit from it.

Something I don't understand about electric cars, why aren't they marketed as a second, around town vehicle for families? Then there are no worries about charging away from home.

The big flaw of beta was its length you couldnt fit movies on it. My country only had VHS tho so I had to find out via youtubers.

AT&T (the original one, not the current renamed Bell South) had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the packet switching (internet) world. I'm not sure they would have been the most likely choice for doing video phones right. Probably all the things that happened had to happen before it would and did make sense.

You guys skipped the whole part about the porn industry being the major influence over VHS or BETA taking off in the 80s.

Well, no, because my grandmother is in her nineties, lived through the Blitz, and gave birth to a baby boomer so she's definitely seen more technological change than my mother. There will be plenty of people from the generations before the baby boomer still alive.

Transport Evolved yesterday said the Honda scooter is available to purchase from dealerships. Yes, Honda and Toyota have missed the ability to be the Tesla. Elon has disrupted marketing as much or more than any of the technologies, IMHO.

There were two competing formats for DVD's and for Blue-Ray which slowed down its adoption until readers were made that could read both format. Blockbuster was going to be first in streaming movies long before Netflix however the partner they picked for this was Enron. Had they picked a different partner such as Real Player it might still be around.

The quality of movies, songs, theater, music went down down down hill in the last few decades and AI will make even more garbage of movies, songs and stories. WITHOUT so much technology, humans create masterpieces. The STORY must come from a human. The production of the story into a media can be done by AI.
