    This documentary got a few things wrong, but either way it leads to the same end result... Joe being villified unfairly. He did in fact now about this incident when it occurred. Exact details were fuzzy, he only heard there were "innapropriate actions". He did indeed notify the authorities (i.e. cops) about it, as well as all of his superiors, including the (then) university president. And ran Sandusky out of Happy Valley. He not only wasn't obligated to do any more, it would have been going over other people's heads and opening himself up to possible lawsuits later on... if the info. he got was found to have no legs after "due process" (something that was never allowed to come to fruition in this case), he could open himself up to slander & perjury charges if he starts running his mouth about it publicly. So at that point it was out of his hands. This man was the perfect scapegoat. So many people wanted him, even PSU's own president and board loathed him and wanted him out since 2004. Other universities and their alum were jealous of PSU's squeaky clean image on and off the field, and clean program and the whole "success with honor" thing. So they were quick to circle like vultures and pick his bones dry the first chance they got. While meanwhile the guy who actually, supposedly, committed the crimes was hardly ever mentioned the entire time. He could walk down the streets of St. College, PA without having a soul approach him. Talk about a total sham. My opinion is that this thing goes much deeper than even Sandusky and The Second Mile program... to a pedophile ring being run for the rich/DC crowd that much has come out about in recent years (just not in the mainstream media). Joe was a sacrificial lamb to protect people waaaay up the totem pole. A great man was completely drug through the mud to protect the biggest scum on this Earth. And it was hardly the first, nor last time it will happen.

    To Judy Young J. Zeigler continues ad infinitum beating on the proverbial dead horse -- over and over and over again. The reason? Because he refuses to acknowledge the central issue re the whole Penn State calamity. Joe Paterno’s action in Shower 2001 was ethically and legally the absolute wrong reaction! And his legacy will never be restored to its rightful place in history until the following is found acceptable by everyone. Why was his behavior so wrong? It's like this: Call it “fondling,” “touching,” “caressing,” or “horseplay,” a naked male adult with a naked minor in a closed private gymnasium at a major university on a Friday night constitutes reasonable doubt, a legalized suspicion as to the appropriateness of that adult’s behavior. A 911 call is mandated here legally and ethically -- immediately without hesitation. Period! You always let the policing experts take over and investigate the legality or illegality of a scene of alleged rape -- immediately without hesitation. Period! Paterno and McQueary’s transgression was instantaneously making invisible, obscure, and insignificant a little boy suspected to be in immediate danger by replacing his image, instantaneously, with the image of Jerry Sandusky. Had that adult in Shower 2001 been a stranger (or one of JoePa’s grandsons), JoePa’s legacy today would be untouched! Why the cover up? Because McQueary, his father, Dr. Dranov, and Paterno all had a many years acquaintance with Jerry Sandusky and because of this familiarity, they all feared for the reputation of Penn State and its football team! For Shame!

    @Colin White -- Thanks for your question. Had I been McQueary and observed what I thought to be a sexual assault upon a child, I would have immediately dialed 911! In a situation like that you always let a professional investigative authority take over. Had that simple, logical approach been taken, the Penn State calamity would never have transpired!!!!

    Being a Nebraska alum, it's been really easy to jump on the "Hate Joe Pa" bandwagon for 5 years. (Especially after NU got screwed in the '82 game, Spanier as NU Chancellor screwed up the planned succession of Tom Osborne to AD, and we now have to PLAY PSU nearly every year in Big 10 games !) But I've seen this documentary after watching John Z. on Glenn Beck for 3 hours this AM and am completely turned around. I hope the REAL truth CAN be found. One Q though: what was the real motive for Mike McQueary's story alleging more happening than actually did ? What and who were behind the apparent "Let's GET Joe Pa ! campaign ? Didn't he do ENOUGH already for Penn State? He DID have a lot of power - was THAT all it was, a power struggle? And Mike M. was their pawn?

    Joe Paterno hung on for too long. There is no way an 80+ year old man can have a firm handle on a major college football program. I feel sorry for Joe and his family but he shot himself in the foot by simply not retiring after 1994. He had nothing more to prove, so indirectly, he is responsible. I think his statement was that he saw Sandusky and a boy horsing around in the showers and it made him uneasy. i don't think he told Paterno at all that it was anything sexual in nature. Joe said he seemd very upset and could barely get anything out and Joe said "you dont have to tell me, I'll put you in touch with people you feel you can tell". Did it ever occur, even though Joe didn't really like Jerry, that because Mike was so vague with what he saw in the shower(vague enough that jerry was found not guilty on that charge. Not to mention they actually found the kid from the shower incident and he testified that nothing wrong happened) that Joe didn't wanna ruin someone's life until they were sure it needed to be taken this far. Joe was thrown under the bus, and he was guilty of one thing, he trusted his superiors to do the right thing, and they tried to cover it up, because of all the damn money 💰 pumping through the football program!!! Having read the depositions and testimony in this case, the stipulated facts seem to be the following. 1. McQueary told Paterno about an incident he witnessed in the shower over a week after he witnessed it. 2. Paterno reported the incident to his immediate superiors in the athletic department. 3. An email revealed that Paterno was uneasy about a certain course of action being taken regarding the revelation of the information. The third part, which is inconclusive, is the most damning. It implies that Paterno may have indeed helped to quell a movement towards unmasking this behavior. That said, there is no conclusive evidence to prove that he did. It is impossible to absolve Paterno of wrongdoing, particularly because there are pieces of evidence which suggest he may have been complicit in a cover up, but it is similarly impossible to suggest that he was a major force in any wrongdoing. It is unknown what his exact part was. What can be concluded, and what was said by Paterno himself, is that he should have done more. He was clearly made aware that there was something going on with Sandusky, and he fulfilled only his basic obligations. It is unfair to say that others would have done differently, since the circumstances are not known.. It is similarly unfair to say that Paterno knew the full extend of the crimes since there is no evidence of that. It is not unfair, however, to say that he should have done more. He knew that something inappropriate was going on and he clearly did not exhaust all resources that he could have to remedy the situation. Ultimately, the biggest problem with Paterno was the legacy he allowed to build over his decades at Penn State. Paterno cast himself- or at the least allowed other to do so via proxy- as the bastion of morality in collegiate athletics for years. He therefore left himself open to criticism when he failed to live up to those standards. Paterno was in all likelihood a good guy, but that isn't the same as being the ideal moral standard. He conflated the two for years, and it was his ultimate downfall.

    +Thomas McGrath Well written. However, I believe McQueary told Paterno about the shower incident the next day after it happened. I think Joe passed the buck to his (in name only) superior and washed his hands of it with no follow up. You are also correct in that Paterno allowed the media and the PSU PR machine to make him much more as an image than he really was. I agree about the conflation and I would submit it was exacerbated by his staying way too long past his time as head coach.

  • @thomasmcgrath9395

    @thomasmcgrath9395

    You are absolutely right about the McQueary point, I was thinking about a different relay in the chain of information which took over a week. I also think you are right about Joe passing the buck, but I think he is in many ways too condemned for this. Obviously he should have done more, but I am not convinced he acted much differently than many others would have. Where I do have a problem, and where I think we have both noted his larger issues came from, was the cultish following he garnered. I think this began far before his overstay in the coaching position (although I am going off of things I have heard and read since I was not alive), and unfortunately has maintained after this all happened. What disappoints me most in Penn State fans is not their willingness to defend Paterno in general, but the effort with which they have put into it. I don't think taking away his wins was the right thing to do (it doesn't change the outcome of the games), but there is something spine tingling about the movement to resurrect all of these accomplishments. I was hopeful that Penn State would use this to be better moving forward, but it instead seems to have motivated them to try to rekindle the past with ignorance towards the crimes. Sure, one can appreciate Joe Paterno's accomplishments, but the atrocities that happened under his watch are also inextricable from his legacy. I'm worried that the university (and I mostly mean the students and alumni) has already begun to rewrite history in order to embrace the football program's accomplishments, while glossing over what the implications of those ended up being on the community.

There are many within the JoeBot camp that insist Sandusky was innocent and that the victims are all liars. It's incredible. So many of these fans imbued Joe's false image into their own lives that they cannot admit he did anything wrong. The resulting look in the mirror is too much for them to bear. Classic cult behavior. I will tell you this too. If you publicly criticize them, Joe or PSU they will stalk you. It's pretty funny albeit a bit creepy. As one commentator said, "Joe may get his wins back, but he doesn't get to be a hero anymore." Of course what really gets lost in the defense of Joe is the kids who suffered. The constant defense of Joe who clearly did not do enough makes it even more dangerous for kids. I hope that lesson is learned at least.

    +Thomas McGrath what atrocities happened under paterno's watch? For one Sandusky was no longer a coach in 2001. The university allowed him to use the facilities as part of his retirement which is well documented that Paterno was not happy about. Furthermore Sandusky was aquitted of all charges stemming from the 2001 shower incident(only alleged crime on PSU property) not only because of the lack of information Mike provided but because they found the kid and he testified that nothing inappropriate happened. So anything that Jerry was found guilty on, had nothing to do with Joe's watch. Lets blame the actual wrongdoer please and that's Jerry not Joe.

    +Andy L Sandusky's predations did not start in 2001. Paterno signed off on Sandusky's retirement. Sandusky was convicted of 4 out of 5 charges regarding the 2001 shower incident and another victim was assaulted 6 months later on PSU campus. They did not ever find the victim of Jerry in the shower for sure and he never testified in court. Jerry did it but Joe knew in 01 and could have stopped it.

    The people making the negative comments have a very bad sense of grammar, they sound like elementary school students. This leads me to believe your probably very uneducated, leading to the conclusion on why you speak with such ignorance that is no longer tolerated in todays society. If you want to post an opinion based comment at least sound like a professional and people might listen, other wise keep your opinions to yourself. WE ARE PENN STATE and your ignorance will not bring us down, but instead bring us closer as a whole. The greatest part is most of you have no relative relation to the situation or even understand the impact this has had on ME and past/present alumni!!! You comments are disrespectful and in order to make a reasonable comment, make the comment based on factual statements rather than your own ignorance.

I say to you buddy, if you had a child in a facility and that child was found in a compromising position with a person in authority, and it was made known to the facilities overseer, and that overseer did nothing, would you make a documentary, in don't think so.

    he didn't see anything to set off a five alarm fire? really? you guys are arguing the semantics of what he saw? Sandusky was with a boy in a shower, doing something completely wrong. the loyalty to an organization over the truth is really sad to see. Joe Paterno definitely was caught up in the middle of this, and was used as a scape goat, but he did say right in the script that it was definitely of a sexual nature. That right there is that starting/finish line. At that point, if you associate with that man again, it is clearly your choice to associate with a child rapist/pedophile.

    The only possible explanation that could exonerate JoePa is that he was so senile during his final years at Penn St that he had no clue what was going on around him. If you truly believe that Joe Pa was unaware of everything that was going down, and that he was not senile, then he must have had an IQ of 60.

If something like this ever came out about Alabama i'd never support the program and hope they would shut it down. Penn State football will be forever remembered for this incident, and those kids and their families have to be reminded of those sickos every time they come across the logo. Y'all were overrated as hell anyway. How many rings he get like 2? in 100 years of coaching or some shit? Weak.
