The idea of using art to reflect on yourself really resonates with me. Art helps me understand people, including myself. Sometimes the hardest part of understanding yourself is grappling with the fact that you have to work to do it. Analyzing something else can help you (well, can help me) get started down that path. Great video man, I appreciate the content you put out.

As someone who didn't pay much attention to Bioshock 2 at all, let alone the DLC, I am happy to have found out what it seems to have been all about. Seems like Minerva's Den could almost be a predecessor to the stories told in Soma, both in terms of setting and themes. Perhaps not as messed up as Soma's AI beings turned out to be, but I can deffo see a potential lineage there!

@Chicken Fingers I concur. Such a shame that it was heavily underappreciated by the people. I think one of the very intriguing things about Bio 2 is that side-plot about that guy (I forgot his name) who went into rapture at almost the same time as Delta's 'resurrection' to search for his daughter. You could even see him reunited with her as a rumbler in the end

I didn't forget. in fact, when I say "Bioshock Trilogy" I mean Bioshock 1, Bioshock 2, and Minerva's Den. Counting just those games (and maybe the ARG and some of the pre-Infinite tie-ins?) as part of the continuity is the only way that the term "Bioshock Trilogy" makes any sense. Infinite, by it's own admission, several times, is a spin-off that's not part of the same story as Bioshock 2 and Minerva's Den.

I had put off finishing Minerva's Den. The last few months I kept seeing 9/11 popping up and knew something was going to happen for me then. I've been dating my ex again, long distance, and I wasnt really happy. The feeling was scratching at my door for months. Last night (9/12) I finally beat the dlc. The story of milton porter, pearl, the thinker, and rapture had come full circle. His greif had to be left behind, and bringing back a loved one electronically did nothing for him. He left rapture and the thinker, and made peace with his past. A few hours after my gf called and told me she was also unhappy, and we were both so happy to just say that together. We decided to be friends, and a weight was lifted. Games have been guiding me through so much, and what are the odds how well the story of Minerva and my own would intertwine so distinctly. Love you Leadhead.

Holy shonks! This is some really personal and powerful stuff you’re sharing. Thank you for a profound glimpse into the struggles of your life. It is, one one level, very touching on it’s own, but, on another level, it also brings such a different - human - angle to your video essay which really gives it an absolute x-factor of value to me. This essay of yours is not just some rational analysis of mechanics or whatever and whatnot - which I truly am interested in as a note -, but something which will always leave the analysis completely completely pale in comparison to it: It is an honest rapport of your relation to a piece of art, how it has impacted you, and what it has revealed to you. That is in and of itself very artistic, to me, as it can be your viewers’/listeners’ gateway to doing the very same. On a completely different note, I also want to comment on your use of a phase theory of grief. To my knowledge, I am doing my Master’s in Psychology, the phase models of psychology have fallen heavily out of vogue from the 90’s till now, as they prescribe far too clearly distinct stages for the human experience: They have to be progressed through in a pretty linear fashion from start till end and boom - freed from sorrow. These days, it seems that the two-track model of oscillation between reconstruction of one’s life and dwelling with sorrow is liked more. It paints the picture of a truly uncharted journey in experiencing grief and sorrow, which at one point in time can shackle you to your home wallowing in despair, while you at another point in time may muster the will and energy to focus on what actually is in the here and now outside your mind and continue building a future for yourself. Even though it can be critisised as a quite individualised model of people in grief, not itself taking into account any concrete thing or person around and with the griever, it does seem to me to paint a more realistic picture of a person who does not just progress linearly, but rather wavers from despair to courage and back again several times before if ever “getting anywhere”. If you’re interested in reading more I have a link for the article: dspace.library.uu.nl/bitstream/handle/1874/384090/DUAL.pdf?sequence=1 Finally, I will say that I will wait in eager patience for you to finish your essay on Amused to Death, as that is an album I quite enjoy. Additionally, an association has sprung up in my mind. I can’t quite trace my association at the moment, but I thought of a very short but sweet song that I would lile to share with you: open.spotify.com/track/6K2LoDB7Fo2Uylg3yGHjSy?si=fDsEhq8rR_-SGGpvsx_LZQ Thank you for a great essay, and I’m looking forward to more!

Porter and Delta are two of my favorite characters in the bioshock universe Maybe Liz While you won’t make an essay about it I find it an interesting notion that the enemy design in placement in bioshock 2 when compared to bioshock 1 reflect in the narratives The family attacks you in groups of weaker enemies whereas the first game had more developed but fewer enemies. I found it a conceptual level of what the many should have been in system shock 2 like Instead of just using the certain type of weapon for robots and a different type for organics The two would operate differently In fact I would even prefer if this went further and weapon weaknesses were based on how the enemy would be attacking For example A weapon that is for a very mobile single enemy may have some form of auto locking Whereas a weapon for multiple enemies would focus on AOE or spread

I don't have any words to say about this video. I'm not sure if I can even come up with any words about the DLC other than "I've never thought of it that way". I've been trying to contextualizing my grief into someone else's work as well. In my case, its the anime FLCL. I don't exactly know why, but I feel like the show just... gets me, ya know? This show has been helping me a lot over the past 8 months and the aftermath of a long and strong relationship I've had that recently ended badly and painfully for me. To be honest, Ive been trying to find anything to either give me insight on what happened or express how I feel, whether it be games, movies, tv shows, or even video essays here on KZread. Then I found your videos, most specifically one of your vids on Planescape: Torment. As much as I want to say that I'm finally over it now, that I don't care anymore about what happened, about him... I can't really shake the grief I still feel about it. Its still there, regardless of how I feel about it all. For all I know, it might never go away. I don't know what else to say other than retelling the same story I've been saying all over KZread about what happened between us, but what would be the point? It's not going to change what happened; things are over between us, he hates my guts and I'm most likely never going to speak to him ever again. But i just can't.... let go. Not yet, anyway. I just wish things didn't end this way. I wish things didn't end at all.

It's always such a pleasure to watch your content. There's just so much personality in it, it's unlike any other content creators that I've seen. You never give off the feeling of pseudo-intellectualism, you always sound so genuine, it's an absolutely incredible amount of passion that I wish I could have. Keep up the great work Leadhead.

The plot is amazing, really caught me, and it’s so fucking good to know more about the aspects of the Alfa series, it’s amazing know they aren’t totally accomplished to the suit like Bouncers and Rosies, still have an complete human being inside it, who likes we sees on 2, they still love, care, feels... that make us think how Delta would be, inside all that armor, that DLC give even more humanity to them, the Porter history is incredible and so well written that certainly put him as one of the best characters of bioshock even his games only having 8 hours of gameplay

Okay man I need to say I can relate to you on the cheating on a loved one and feeling terrible about it. since it happened years ago I've started watching my actions and ensuring (to the extent I can) not to do something so hurtful again and it's made me (in my opinion at least) a more thoughtful person. idk, as bad of a thing it is to do, it's nice to hear that someone else has done something like that and has had a similar reaction to the realisation that they did something like it and want to better thamselves. shameful for both us, but it's helped us grow I think. (not comparing myself to you... or, I kind of am, but not in some "omg we're bros" kind of way)

if it's not obvious I agree with a lot of the other commenters who say your personal introspection in this video is what's drawn me to enjoy it more. melding video games and the human mind and emotional turmoil into a channel's subject matter is great and I look forward to watching more of your videos as I have been.

I appreciate the personal touch in your videos so much. When you started talking about your own negativity and it's relationship with the game, I couldn't stop thinking about a mistake that I made a long time ago and how I carry it with me every day still regardless of where I am and what I'm doing. When I realized that you also made the same mistake, I started to believe that one day I would be able to move past the shame and take ownership of what I've done, for better or worse. I never write comments like this, but you truly inspired me today.
