It's depressing to think the classic Silent Hill games will fade away in the future because Konami was dumb enough to throw away their files when they finished their games. That's why the HD collection turned out so bad, we'll never be able to restore the game for new consoles.

Laura is real. She knew Mary at the hospital and talked to her many times, Laura learnt about Silent Hill from either Mary telling her about it or reading the letter she stole from the nurse, that's how she knows who James is. Laura didn't know Mary was dead, to her she probably assumed Mary had gotten better and moved to Silent Hill, Laura was an orphan and wanted to get adopted by Mary. Everyone at her orphanage ignores her existence, hence why she was able to run away so easily, Mary was the only adult to give her the motherly love she always wanted. Even the fact that James never met her shows that he must not have visited his wife so often, which would naturally leave Laura to assume that he never loved her, because if she had someone she loved, she would go anywhere just to see their face again, just like she did to try and find Mary. The reason Laura gets around so easily and doesn't see any monsters is because she is innocent, she has no guilt, she has done nothing wrong and has no trauma. Unlike the other characters she doesn't see these obstacles they have to get through in order to progress on in the town, for her it's just an empty, run down, normal town, that she can walk around in easily. Her reaction to James telling her he killed Mary is devastating. She left the only home she ever knew to travel miles to this one town fuelled with the only hope and desire that she will be a family with Mary and finally get what she always wanted. But that's all torn apart in front of her by the person that Was part of Mary's actual family.

Assuming the Laura we see is real, how is she in Silent Hill? Couldn't it be the case that James met the real Laura in the hospital before killing his wife, she gives James Mary's letter before he kills her, but this is repressed by his consciousness until the ending? The Laura we see is just James' projection of her. If the Laura we see is real and innocent, explain to me her evil deeds - bullying Eddie, kicking the key away, locking up James, all this before discovering that James killed Mary. To me, these evil behaviors reflect her twisted projection of James, who sees her simultaneously as innocent and as malignant, because she is (through her relationship with Mary) a reminder of his sins. Laura is real and James did met her outside of Silent Hill, but the Laura we see in the town is not real. Again, if the Laura we see is real, then how is she in Silent Hill? I mean, is the town a physical place everyone (innocents) can step upon without being disturbed, and even interact with the "damned"?

@@nerostark4320 what I have trouble with is understanding her actions and motivations in the game, I'm not convinced by "oh she's just a child and is acting accordingly". If she is in Silent Hill looking for Mary, where is her care taker? Even if she isn't affected by the town, it's strange to me that she is alone there, without any responsible adult with her. Is Silent Hill a perfectly normal town for innocent/pure people? When James and Mary hung out on the town years before, I've never quite understood if their peaceful "honeymoon-like" stay at the Hotel was another metaphor, or if they were really in Silent Hill, unaffected by the monsters. I really like how you adressed the way the game makes you wonder, as the story progresses and the symbolism gets heavier, what's the big thing that has drawn James into the town. After realizing that he probably didn't cheat on her (because James keeps looking for Mary even though he has found Maria), you come across Pyramid Head. The big sword is much more than just a phallic representation of male urges and its dangers. The main symbol, in my opinion, lies in its weight. Pyramid Head has a hard time carrying that thing around, because it's incredibly heavy, just as the metal pyramid that locks his head. So, as soon as you start connecting the dots and linking that weird pyramid monster to James, you see it killing Maria, which torments James more than anything else he had previously seen in Silent HIll. If that isn't enough, Maria is magically brought back, just to be killed again, right in front of him, by the same monster. Even before the big reveal about James' past, you can already imagine that Mary didn't die because of the disease. The way Silent Hill makes James continuously and powerlessly watch his own crime being committed, right in front of him and by nightmarish representations, is the most intriguing part of the game in my opinion. It's so cruel and so dark, yet it makes so much sense compared to how we deal with guilt within our minds.

@@BigDaddyZakk420 I had played it a long ago so I thought he finds newspapers in game about both of them, but regardless of that I meant that he probably read about them in real life, and remembers segments of what he read in real life in his hallucinations in Silent Hill. How they arrived doesn't mean anything if he is hallucinating the entire thing. The entire game being Jame's hallucination is in line with the water ending, but not the other ending. I think water ending was the real ending because at the final parts of the game the hotel starts getting flooded with water, which I think is representing Jame's lungs being flooded while he's drowning. In the other endings the hotel getting flooded doesn't make any sense.

It’s good to see other people who “get” silent hill 2. So many people don’t understand the depth and complexity of the story nor do they seem to understand the symbolism. Konami doesn’t even understand Silent hill, like for instance how pyramid head should have never appeared in any other silent hill game. The first three silent hill games are absolute works of art. It’s too bad we’re highly unlikely to ever get a true silent hill story again.

It cost me like $60 something dollars and took me several months, but I finally beat Silent Hill 2 after a few breaks. It was probably the most difficult video game I've ever beaten as it felt like pure torture at some times. The eternal darkness, the confusing story line, and the looming depression throughout the game was difficult to deal with. I can wholeheartedly say that this video game is a masterpiece and encapsulates depression from all different angles. By the end, you are on the edge of your seat and everything is explained yet you are still left with a cliffhanger...why go through all the insane drama to come to such a sad conclusion. The only other video game that made me feel like this was The Last of Us. Bravo.

I played the director's cut and in the pantry of the hotel there's a box that says "Cock" but then you move and the box says "cookies". WTF. Even if he could get out of most situations with intelligence rather than violence, he felt lacking and as a player you end up feeling the same way. Is a masterpiece.

Welcome to the world, as the song goes. Most people in the world do not have a healthy mind, nor are "normal". The nature of humans, as with all living things, is abnormality and deviation. The simple complexity of humans especially makes us prone to this, and is why we can so often go insane in a near infinite number of ways (be they grand or notable or subtle or inconsequential). It's not really a look on morality; just an observation of how people behave (and, often, doing something bad is a cause and sign of the person's mind no longer being healthy or normal. It's the break).
