Fun fact for y'all: Yoshimi is inspired by a real person, Yoshimi P-we, who is part of a band called OOIOO. The idea came to them when listening to her rather wild and experimental vocal style which they felt made her sound like she was fighting some kind of evil force. Look up the song "Ina" by OOIOO, and I think you'll hear what they mean :)

Not 100% sure, but I think she might be the girl in the video. There aren't a ton of pics of the real Yoshimi on the web but there's definitely a resemblance. If nothing else, the person in the video was definitely chosen to look like her.

Yeah once you realize what it's about it's sad as fuck. To me it's about the process you go through when your losing someone you love to cancer or anything like that. The childlike imagery makes me think of when I was a kid and my dad died. I spent years trying to figure it out and naturally it felt like I had to have something or someone to blame. Now I blame 3 packs of kool a day.

I don’t know if it’s any consolation or advice but I saw them in concert last night. Before the final chorus they stopped and Wayne says something along the lines of “this song isn’t just about an Asian girl that fights robots. It’s about that friend or family member that has a task you know is impossible ahead of them. They won’t know that it is. But they are so strong and as their friend, you never tell them the task is impossible”

I used to go to Flaming Lips shows back in the late 80's early 90's. saw them in some shithole in Noble, OK with everybody stuffed into a really small room sweating like crazy and it was amazing, they used to end some of their shows with a cover of the Bee Gee's Every Christian lion Hearted Man that rocked. stil have a couple of Salisbury's shirts from the day cool to see them go so far
i dont know why people think this song is so bad! i love it. its a beatiful song and shouldn't be so looked down upon. its a metaphore for his friend who was dying of cancer and was doing everthing she could to stop it, never giving up. she was really funny and kind. this is a beutiful song and deserves more popularity.

The title character is inspired by Boredoms/OOIOO member Yoshimi P-We, following a comment in the Flaming Lips studio that her machine-sound abstract singing sounds like she is battling monsters-Coyne added 'pink'.[2] P-We also performs on the album. Some listeners consider Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots to be a concept album; however, the story is debated, as it is only directly apparent in the first four tracks. Despite the story-type title and science fiction themes, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne has made it clear that Yoshimi is not intended to be a concept album.[3]
