The First Formic War | Series Review

Ойын-сауық

100 years before Ender's Game, there was Earth Unaware, Earth Afire, and Earth Awakens--The First Formic War. The time has arrived for me to perfectly complete the entire Ender Omnibus.

My favorite character is Bingwen and I really like how the Chinese basically thought of battle school, other than the training in space part.

Thank you for reviewing this!! I just finished the trilogy and, as a die-hard ender's game fan, I have mixed opinions. I never really empathized with anyone but Mazer, however I think the world building was decently well done here. The mining ships' process of arranged marriages, the growing separation between space-dwellers and those still on earth, the political red tape the MOPs and Mazer had to maneuver around all gave me a pretty clear idea of what humanity looks like at this point. I will say I found victor the least interesting by far, basically just a paragon protagonist with no defining flaws (besides being in love with his cousin, I guess). I suppose the same could be said for Mazer, but I liked the exploration of his turmoil between sacrificing his life for his planet and allowing himself to love more selfishly for Kim and Bingwen. I think my favorite scenes were all in Earth Awakens, in my opinion the best book. the scene where Wit dies turning off the radiation, with Deen singing Navy songs to him, was especially powerful to me, but I also really liked the reveal of Ukko knowing of the aliens since the beginning and Kim asking for a Maori wedding. What I didn't love was the painfully slow pace of the first book, in fact I had to come back to it months after reading the first chapter or so as I was so annoyed by the incest plotline at the beginning (glad that didn't last). I do think the death of Mono deserved much more attention, it seemed to be forgotten so quickly and I loved that kid so much, it broke my heart. I also found Bingwen's genius a bit far-fetched, but I suppose I should expect unrealistically smart children from an OSC book, and I did enjoy his use of the Med-assist to help the people of Dragon's Den. I don't know if we hear from this character again in the second formic war books (next on my list!), but if we do I hope that his medical abilities are explored in his time at what is clearly going to be a precursor for Battle School. Finally, I can't speak on the accuracy of the portrayal of different cultures here but I appreciate the diversity of the protagonists' backgrounds and ethnicities. I agree with you it's only worth a read if you care about the Enderverse, but I will say I still enjoyed reading it and I found the story unpredictable and compelling.

I'm halfway through book 1 of the second war, but I thoroughly enjoyed the first formic war, and wished it were broken down into 2 movies for the big screen. Hard R sci-fi war drama.

@@DragonArmyBooks Orson Scott Card having a political opinion you personally disagree with doesn't detract from his talent. It's hardly any different than people currently bashing J.K. Rowling over her completely valid opinions.

You said nothing really happens in the first book to set things up. Wrong. I thought things happened. I thought the scenes were entertaining. The second book is very entertaining as well. I thought there was some character development. The first formic wars was an amazing series. I agree that it would have been good as one book, and stronger character development would have been better.

Disagree. I loved these books and can't wait to get the final book of the 2nd Formic War. There was plenty of character growth and Whit O'Toole's death was tragic, as was Mazer Rackam not ever feeling that he had truly been accepted by the MOPS.

I thought they were quite enjoyable. I think your issue with them is that the series is not Ender's game, and your viewing it through the lens of nostalgia associated with reading Ender's game as a child.

I’m gunna have to disagree on a few of your points. Admittedly it’s been awhile since I’ve read the other books in the series, and I may have missed a few in the shadow series, but I loved this trilogy. Nothing close to the OG, but I kinda consider Earth Unaware to be my second favorite. But I think it’s because we may love different aspects of reading. I love how they set up these characters and made them feel realistic and lived in. I definitely connected to them, especially Victor. And especially how Mazer didn’t get into the MOP’s like we expected. Especially on rereads knowing how they end up it makes me appreciate how they started. Sometimes nothing is happening in the plot to further character growth or set up. I did still like your video and enthusiasm! You don’t hear many people taking about the Enderverse and the author is I’m sure part of the reason which is unfortunate and understandable. But ya I think my favorite character is Victor cuz I’ve also been in love with my cousin. Lol nooo jk jk jk.

Same. Had no idea who card was when I read Enders Game. Speaker for the Dead, to me , is one of the best scifi books ever. Card is horribly anti gay and a really bad person, but it doesn't change that the books were very good. I plan to re read everything again this year, and it leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth thinking about Card, but I think the stories exist and are really beyond him at this point.

A lot of my friends loved Speaker even more than Ender's Game. As a kid, I didn't see why. But now I definitely do!

Favorite? Hmm. Literally none of them. I don’t think any of the characters were even that memorable. This may be the first series I’ve read that I haven’t even remotely connected to a character. Probably for the reasons you mentioned.
