I like the fan theory that Dale was on a watchlist and Boomhauer was sent on an undercover assignment to keep an eye and gather information about him and his gun club buddies since they were childhood friends. And considering how oblivious Dale is, it would be plausible that he never paid attention enough to realize one of his best friends had become a Texas Ranger.

Fox never said they cancelled KOTH to make room for the Cleveland show although it is easy to see why one might think that. KOTH simply did not have enough viewers to keep Fox interested in continuing the program anymore. They are a company after all and even one episode of airtime is valuable enough to deny the final episodes to air. Anyway, they saw more potential in Seth's show because he already had two hit series and fox probably made a deal with him but they may not have if KOTH had not dropped in the amount of viewers. They aired the episodes fox abandoned on adult swim though. They were really not that great.

One of the best finales ever done. We don’t need a reboot or spin off. We need shows that respect their characters enough to give them proper closure and endings. This and Regular Show knew what they were doing. It’s a finale that makes you ready to start all over again, which is exactly what they wanted back then. Continued viewership in syndication.

What a concept - an entertaining show about ordinary people being ordinary. Hank is comically square, but time proves him a super hero for his iron determination to live right and do right. The episode where Cotton motivated Peggy to walk was my epiphany about how much heart there is in this show. The amount of care that went into balancing the humor, the heart, the story lines, the back stories and the character development is astounding. Really a pretty amazing body of work.

For those curious, and discussing the issue, this WAS the last broadcast episode on Fox and was intended as such. When Fox canceled the series (for the second time actually), we selected this episode from among our season 13 stories as most suitable to be the finale and wrote the final scene to wrap it up. We had four other episodes in the can which later aired on Adult Swim, but this was the finale. We wanted to go out with an episode in keeping with the spirit and character of the show. Something real and small (in the best sense) not showy and false. We were originally cancelled in season 10 and "Lucky's Wedding Suit" was going to be the series finale and the last scene was supposed to wrap up the series-- the guys reminiscing in the alley after Luanne's wedding about all that had happened. At the eleventh hour, the show was picked up again, and we re-wrote the last scene. The missing Bill wedding cake resolution is true. The animation was a little confusing and we were tight on time, so unfortunately it was cut. It is true the show dealt with Buck's dysfunctional co-dependent relationship with Lenore a few times, but throwing out the frost-bitten decades old wedding cake was our way of saying that in that moment he was finally, definitively free of her. In retrospect, is a big regret. For us, Jeff Boomhauer, Texas Ranger, was just a fun delicious surprise, which obviously invites a lot of speculation in hindsight.

Question, if you are the real Jim Dauterive: Was Bobby Bill's son? The theory rests on the apparent similarities between Bobby and Bill, and the fact that Peggy seems to despise Bill despite his obvious affection for her. Personally, I just think Bill, on account of his traumatic childhood, is attracted to/feels most comfortable around people who shit on him, so to speak. I also think Bill and Peggy may have had a brief, non-sexual fling in some distant yesteryear, but nothing that would have resulted in Bobby being born. The writers seem to be aware of this not-so-secret dynamic, though, and seem to tease at it throughout the series (e.g. when Dale proposes that Bill "inseminate" Peggy after Wally proves to be a less-than-stellar son substitute, when Bobby asks Bill if he was adopted, when Peggy and Bill were on the bridge in "Bill of Sales," the secret sauce episode, and more), but, ultimately, I think Bill just sees the Hills as the family he himself would have liked to have had, if things were different. That's why he often expresses jealousy toward Hank, attraction/feelings for Peggy, and a fatherly attitude toward Bobby. He doesn't feel the same for the Gribbles because he knows their "family" was largely built on lies and deceit, whereas Hank and co. seem to embody everything he wants out of a family. Sorry for the novel, but I'm self-quarantining and am watching this series for about the 8th or 9th time haha

The characters remind me a lot of my family and the people in my area (southern Kansas) so it hits close to home, and the tone and humor isn’t “haha poopies gore and sex” like most other adult cartoons. Really sad actually. Rather have had them do the wedding cake scene to show he was over his ex wife. But the way they went just shows life isn't fair sadly.

The Bobby/Hank relationship grows so tight here compared to other times they came together because this was something that Hank really felt he was passing on instead of learning to like himself, and Bobby had his own personal interest in separate from whether or not his dad liked it. They could finally be mutual enthusiasts with their own information to share and learn from each other in a language the other was already familiar with. This was the hobby that they could talk about for years to come. And while the propane/charcoal and other heat methods issue was bound to come up again, Bobby had earned Hank's respect on the subject so Hank would definitely be more receptive to the idea specifically from his son who knew more as a teenager about beef than Hank did in his 40's.

The true ending to this beloved show: Hank and Bobby finally find something they have in common, a passion for cooking on the grill. Peggy sees this and finds it heartwarming, instead of bringing attention to her. Dale success healing Nancy’s headache symbolizes she has stopped cheating on him with John Redcorn and she truly loves Dale as a husband. Kahn and Minh lay off Connie for dinner. Saying she has studied enough and should enjoy spending time over getting smarter than what she already is. Buck and Luanne have a daughter they love, and are happy raising it in their own house. Offscreen, Bill picks up a frostbitten, old and moldy wedding cake from his fridge, smells the smoke, and throws it away. He is now free from depression over Lenore and has completely let go of her. Boomhauer’s job is finally revealed. Hank teases a potential follow up series saying Bobby has a future of grilling. Bobby picks up the last steak and says “Looks like this is the last one.”
