Mickey Thomas entered into Jefferson Starship with drummer Aynsley Dunbar in (1979). By (1982) after Jefferson Starship recorded the album (Winds of Change), Aynsely Dunbar left or was fired by Paul Kantner. Mickey Thomas had called Donny Baldwin from their time spent in Elvin Bishop Group. By (1983) Donny Baldwin was in Jefferson Starship until (1984). Once the album by Jefferson Starship (Nuclear Furniture) was released, there was the split from Paul Kantner's Jefferson Starship to Starship. Of course, the famous fight in (1989), removed him in Starship. Donny Baldwin would go on to play with-- Jerry Garcia Band, .38 Special, Pablo Cruise, Eddie Money, & Paul Rodgers. He would rejoin Jefferson Starship in (2008), after long time drummer--Prairie Prince who was in Jefferson Starship from (1993-2007), who left to play with the (New Cars). Jefferson Starship & Starship share trade secrets and have a lot of common ground in their catalog. One thing is for sure, Mickey Thomas is one hell of a singer. Donny Baldwin has carved out a nice career for himself playing with some iconic bands.

That's the way Nuclear Furniture is mix beetwen classic rock sound and that psychedelic sound (in some songs) that liked so much to Paul Kantner but has nothing to do wih the direction od the band. That resentful progressist hippieoid doesn't even wanted a successful band, just tour from time to time to pay the dues.

@@danuber5559 Paul Kantner was a controlling force in Jefferson Starship. On Nuclear Furniture, he literally took the masters and (held them as hostage) to leverage what he wanted in the final mix. It took months to talk him into bring the master recordings back into the studio. Paul used conflict during his tenure with both Jefferson Airplane and the two different versions of Jefferson Starship. I thought the song, "Laying it on the line" was a great song. While Paul created tensions in the band, the responded with a great material.

Dunbar was kicked out, probably for the exact same reason he got kicked out of Journey: rampant indiscretions with underage female fans. Kantner never gave the reason publicly (Journey's former manager Herbie Herbert *did*), but Kantner was quoted as saying about Dunbar, "he crossed the line".

@@simplechronology2605 I have researched this topic for years and have gone down the rabbit hole for clues. Paul Kantner definitely called the shots and was not shy about sharing his feelings. I preferred Aynsely Dunbar's drumming with Jefferson Starship on his recordings with--Freedom at Point Zero, Modern Times, & Winds of Change over Donny Baldwin's drumming style. There are certain behaviors that were not tolerated. Aynsely Dunbar was being interviewed on a drum podcast and the interviewer asked why did (John Barbata) the predecessor to Aynsely Dumbar in Jefferson Starship leave the band? Aynsley responded, "I cannot answer that question." It was clear Dunbar misunderstood the question, while answering the question honestly about his departure in Jefferson Starship.

Mickey Thomas took the high road and never revealed what happened nor trashed his former band mates. However, if I were to guess I would say that he developed an ego, and Starship progressively became a vanity project for him. It’s been told that he pulled a power play on Grace Slick once and arrived early to the studio to record his vocal track on a song without her. If that’s true, that unfortunate because he destroyed a band. He has an amazing singing voice well suited for AOR.

I kinda hate Donny Baldwin for it, their last album was really good in my opinion and they where headed for better times and better albums. They really weren't. Even a top 20 single couldn't sell the record. I agree that Love Among the Cannibals is a great record but it was bombing. It was completely and utterly over. The record peaked at #64 on the charts. RCA likely wouldn't have given them another shot. Further, Mark Morgan wanted to get into scoring. If the assault didn't end the band, these other things would have.

The single It's Not Enough got a little promotion as I remember but it was short lived. The single, album and the band seemingly vanished quickly after that. I believe even if Cannibals was successful it probably would've been their last album anyway. The 80's was ending and the coming of grunge would've squashed any further releases.
