80s DUET Was a BUST Until Producer Had Singers Swap Parts… Made it a #1 SMASH! | Professor Of Rock

Ойын-сауық

Up next the story of one of the biggest #1 soundtrack hits of the 80s.Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now by Starship for the 80s cult classic movie Mannequin starring Andrew McCarthy. It was a duet between two power house voices in Mickey Thomas and Grace Slick who started Jefferson Airplane back in the 60s and then became Jefferson Starship in the 70s and just Starship in the 80s. This #1 hit written by by Diane Warren and Albert Hammons wasn’t really working until the legendary producer Narada Michael Walden who had just written massive hits for Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston decided to have the male and female parts swapped. So Mickey and Grace switched their singing parts which brought a completely different sound ..and the song started to explode going to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987. Then it became a hit again decades later when it was used in a commercial. Up next the singer Mickey Thomas and the producer Narada Michael Walden tell us the story of this movie hit.

#1980s #rock #vinylstory
Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock , always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time; Take a break from the craziness of life and become a part of our music community by subscribing for daily content. If you want even more content take a look at our patreon link below It times for another edition of our series dos where we break down the greatest duets of the rock era.. We haven’t done one of these in a bit. This one features two major voices of the rock era. One that fractured the conventional in the 60s and another who has one of the most underapprciated voices in music that was a mainstay on radio in the 80s..
The evolution of a band is an interesting thing to watch. In watch the Beatles evolve, it started as rocking pop with singalong ditties like I wanna Hold your Hand and She Love You , from there the Fab four began experimenting in ways never before seen and by the time Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Clubs band came out a mere few years after their early pop sound they were a very different band. . .

Good music is just that, good music, no matter from what genre, era or part of the world. It's universally understandable, like a smile. I seriously side-eye people who only listen to one group/artist, I just don't understand how and why. The 'weirder' their playlist, the more interesting the person gets in my opinion, you just know that you'll hear some funny stories about how they came across *that* song.

Whenever Casey squeezed in a bit of background info about the songs and the artists I always loved it and wished for more, but he did not have much time allotted for that. You were dead on when you said "we like what we like". There's no music that you should have to feel bad liking just because someone else doesn't. Music is entirely subjective, one person's treasure is another person's trash. Because we form such strong and deep emotional connections to music, it can be hard not to be upset when someone else can't appreciate what we do. I love Milli Vanilla, Enya, nine inch nails, yacht rock, smooth jazz, heavy metal, EDM, IDM... it's all different and valid. Kurt Cobain was a legit fan of The Shaggs, who are renowned for how bad their music was. Never feel bad for liking something....or NOT liking something, as long as you don't begrudge people who love it.

In recent years, I have been preaching what you said about music being subjective. I've called a few friends on saying "(Insert song/artist here) sucks" and challenged them by responding that just because =they= don't like it, that doesn't mean it sucks. I've always had eclectic tastes in music and am all over the place when it comes to what I like. There are quite a few songs/artists that many would describe as a guilty pleasure that I just really liked and found out much later that some would describe them that way. Others... I knew the "cheese" factor might make some cringe. But... I would just smile and shrug at those around me, then play it anyway.

The story about hiding Starship from his brother is so true. We were much more tribal with our music tastes back then. I started freshman year if highschool in 1990, so figure I was 14 then. My friends were all into heavy metal. The long hair, black concert shirts and all of it. Forget finding a Starship tape or CD, if they found anything softer than Metallica you'd be suffering for it. Even later in our twenties when it wasn't a big deal anymore, I'd be listening to a… I don't know, Cindi lauper ballad on the car stereo in the summer with the windows down, and I find myself turning the volume down when I'd pull up to a red light. Gen Z and Millennials, there's a lot of absurdity coming from that group but I give them credit; their music tastes don't seem to matter like it did in previous generations. I see kids listening to everything from Black metal to hip-hop. Between that and their easy access to both listen AND produce and distribute music, you'd think there would be better music than there is.

I was at Miami University (of Ohio) and we would hang out in the student union and watch daytime game shows, soaps, and of course, MTV. That was back when MTV actually played music videos. LOL!!! At times, we did this at the expense of going to a class. Well, until we started to realize that college GPAs are cumulative and don't reset every year. But as with this song and the movie reference, you have brought back so many amazing and special memories to me and I am sure many others. And yes, I LOVE the band in every iteration they went through. Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Starship..... And while many won't admit it, I remember a TON of people singing this song and We Built This City when they were new!!!! As for Aerosmith. I have loved that song since it came out. Hi Professor! I've only recently discovered your channel and I've been having a great time reminiscing with you. I'm a sucker for a good unknown backstory.) This episode struck me in particulr because I, too, grew up in the Pacific Northwest (Seattle) with a younger brother I didn't share much music with. (You remind me a little of him, which is a good thing.) For us, the unlikely first convergence of taste was the 1963 album "Rhythm of the Rain" by the Cascades. Not just the single, the entire bubble-gummy album. I'm still amazed but you're right, there are only pleasures. My brother and I both have much more eclectic tastes today and we continue to share new and old tunes. All that said, here's a suggestion - and I apologize if you've done it and I missed it: C-I-T-Y by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. I was a full-on disco/pop boy when I heard it, but I was instantly obssessed - and frustrated because I ouldn't find anything by the band on vinyl except the "Eddie and the Cruisers" soundtrack. For a while it was my Holy Grail . . . and it's still my ringtone. Thanks! Keep up the good work.

It's the kind of song where even the verses are catchy, Tyler sings the s**t out of it, and I really connect to the sentiment (when my kid was tiny I would sing it to her and get all teary). Does it reach the heights of Aerosmith's '70s output? Of course not. If we're comparing '90s Aerosmith pop influenced ballad to '90s Aerosmith pop influenced ballad, do I think it's better than 'Amazing'? Easily.
