The Fat Doctor Claims Diets Don't Work!?

Спорт

Last week I saw and interview with The Fat Doctor who was having a heated debate on the radio about the why we are fat & how you cannot change your weight long term. It was very interesting and had some solid point so let's discuss.

1:36 I have seen this "doctor" before but my initial thought from their interview is: No certified doctor who takes their job seriously would just make outrageous claims which go against the majority of the scientific community and not mention a single source/study. Medical professionals and scientists in general would always say something like: "In general, we can assume that [...]" and "There are studies supporting the claim that [...]" This doctor didn't do that once which is unscientific behaviour and a big red flag.

It’s a bit shocking to hear a “doctor” effectively say that calories burned and calories consumed has no impact on your body weight. At the most basic level, that’s the only thing impacting your body fat levels. There’s differences in the efficiency at which ones body might turn consumed calories into fat, but if you’re in a calorie deficit you aren’t going to be putting fat weight back on simply because enough time has past.

Based on the clip you've shown your first disagreement (whilst I agree) isnt based on what she actually said. She didn't mention calories, but instead "..you aren't fat cause of what you eat and how much you exercise". What I think she meant by this is you can lose weight or maintain a healthy weight regardless of what food you eat (e.g burgers, salads, pasta, pizzas...) or whether or not you exercise. As long as youre consuming your maintenance calores or in a calorie deficit you will maintain or lose weight. You will not gain weight. Wrt exercising, it is a tool to help burn more calories to help you with your weight goals. So not essential.

Really well thought out response mate. I was proper triggered by that clip at first. I think there is some validity to the underlying points tho like you say. Saw a cohort study recently showing less than 1% of obese people over 10 years reached and maintained a healthy weight so clearly there is something to it.

Thanks, yeah like anything there are nuances & there are studies that show great results long term. Again I really feel the method is everything, it needs to be a sustainable lifestyle change that you adopt for life. That can seem scary to some, like it means no “insert food” ever gain, but that’s not the case. For me it’s about sustainability and building a lifestyle that support’s positive changes.

That would be so deflating and demotivating for anyone who is really genuinely trying to lose weight and get healthy! What is worse is that she delivers it with such conviction too, 'its a fact'. People will remain overweight and unhealthy due to her. Also, to be obsessed with one thing she said which is way incorrect 'youll always be fat'. Well how do calories stack on as weight without being first put in to the mouth? 😂

Personally I don’t like to talk in absolutes in most aspects of life. There’s is almost always variance. Yeah I think that’s what niggles me most, the “it’s pointless why even try” I seen it first hand multiple times

I think it's a combination of both. I have a friend that has been thin for over 10 years. I've asked if he does anything special and he said he is not on a diet or doing any exercise. In fact, I see him eating and drinking more than me. He said it's genetic and most of his family looks that way. I know other people that eat one or two meals a day and are continuing to gain weight. But I don't think that's a reason to give up, I think it just means people without the genetic advantage need to work harder. I once went on a soup diet, eating only 600-800 calories a day and the weight started dropping fast. But the problem I had was my energy tanked and I started to get nasty leg cramps and other problems. So it was not very sustainable for me but it did show that less calories can reduce weight. At this point I believe it's better to burn it off with exercise than sacrifice nutrition.

You are very correct, genetics 🧬 play a massive role here. Myself included that’s why i’m very open about the realism of weight loss & comparisons.

Initial thoughts.... I really dislike argumentative style interview shows. Let people speak damnit. Only once their opinion is fully presented should you challenge it.

I disagree with a lot of this actually. I have been overweight all my life and that escalated to morbid obesity over the years however that is slowly changing. After years of dieting and failing, I gave up dieting and started to work on the underlying issues as well as looking at my activity levels and food choices. I am quite happy to accept that I will likely be overweight, but my setpoint has come down is the needle is still moving down. Over years I have become strong, put my diabetes into remission and have pretty much perfect bloodworm as well as fitness level above average in my age group. So I believe this is much more fluid than what this interview portrays. Also, we must recognise that all this is very tough and effort required sometimes is massive. Not everyone may be able to change their set point, or possibly even try, but it is possible.

It really is, approaching 50 and feeling better than I did in my 20s, pretty much keeps astonishing even myself. I do think though that the hyper focus on just weight is failing us massively, there is much more to health and longevity than just what the scale says like you also mentioned.

She is doing to gain attention and it works, say something different and you get airtime. Not only that its an easy excuse one of which is nonsense. Yes people do bounce back but that's not 'how you are built', its down to what you put into your body and want you burn

CrAzY PoV in that interview - goes against all science. It is calories in vs calories out/burned, over time as far as I am concerned. Promoting lethargy and non-self-determinism is dangerous and unhealthy.
