Seriously tho, I wouldnt want to name my son Oliver when I already know theres going to be 3 others his same age. We had two tylers growing up in my school who had both the same first name, same middle name AND same innitial starting their last name so for years in school neither of those boys were called by either of their given names and exclusively called by their last.

I think one of the fun/interesting things about more “traditional” names going out of style is that in five or ten years, naming your child something super traditional like Robert, Mary, Peter, or Anne will seem like a bold and edgy choice. I wouldn’t be surprised if within the decade there’s a swing back in popularity for more old-school traditional names that our parents had. Because if you named your daughter Mary right now, she’d almost certainly be the only one in her class.

It’s interesting because names like Ezra, Asher and Boaz have been super common in Jewish communities forever! Even 10 years ago if your name was Levi or Rueben you were almost definitely Jewish lmao. Gutted they’ve gone mainstream in a way!!! Darn!! I think a Jewish baby name video would be cool! There’s lots of trendy Yiddish names coming back like Goldie or Zelda that really fit what a lot of people are looking for these days :) x

Yes, same for the Christian communities. Biblical names that have remained very popular in christian families (Elijah, Isaiah, Noah etc.) are very mainstream these days. Some cultures are offended when others use their religious/spiritual names when they are not affiliated with the community... Christians & Jews appear to be at peace with non-religious folks using names from their holy books.

I'm gutted because all the names that I have loved over the years long before they became fashionable, all suddenly became fashionable and I feel like they have been tainted in a way. I agree with the comment that when they are overused you start to hear them differently, especially when you see them on kids that are the image you have of the name, it spoils it. How many teachers find that they cannot use a name because a child in their school has it, especially when that child is the one that all the teachers dread getting in their class

I think it is just because people are getting tired of them, honestly. My children have DOZENS of friends named Caleb, Jackson, Hunter, Ethan, Logan etc. I know Jacob wasn't on the list but I know at least 15 Jacobs and Emilys. It's as though during that era people felt they had to choose from a very small pool of names, Michaela, Mikayla (etc) and Mackenzie being amongst them. I know dozens. I think that has led to the recent "unique" names, like Tinsley. IMHO, these will not age well. My daughter is at the age now where all her acquaintances are beginning to have children. She is also a preschool teacher. Here are the trends we are seeing: Luna, Harley and Harley Quinn, Eleven, Magnolia, Violet, Aurelia, and all the "ley" names. I asked my other daughter who teaches at the college level for contrast. She said she has a lot of Lauren, Cameron, Audrey, Aubrey, Gabrielle, Samantha, Amanda, Julia, Juliana, Eric, Noah students.

It’s always a lifetime consideration when naming a child, but for those interested in statistics or worried about how the name will be received in ten, twenty years, a list like this is very fascinating. The somewhat click-baiting title of ‘names to avoid’ is really more of joke than it is her actual opinion- as she says at the beginning of the video, one of the names on this list is her child’s name. It’s just a fascinating bit of fun.

For boys it was - David, Stuart, Robert, Lloyd, Bruce, Bryan, Ross, Kevin, Gavin, Peter, Ian, John, Alan & Douglas. How many of there are used today for a new baby ? As a teacher I always wanted to name my daughter an unpopular name, but not too strange. Once I found out a name was booming it came off my list. I picked out a name in high school that I eventually named my daughter. I still love it and every year she is the only one in her grade with it. So mission accomplished. However I checked recently and it has crept on to the top 1000 here in the USA. 😢

And then animal names which aren't so obvious ie. I found the name Aderyn the other day (with an 'r') which means 'little bird'. Keep safe xx

I really enjoyed this list, SJ!! I think I’m one of a few people who DESPISE popular names- if a name is in the top 1,000 then I don’t want to use it (I’m not planning on having kids until I’m in my 30s and I’m currently in my mid-20s), but I guess I’m weird that way! I’m from the Deep South (Birmingham, AL) in the States and it’s really traditional here to name a daughter after the mother or the son after the father- it’s also REALLY traditional here to use the mom’s maiden name or a family surname as a first name for a girl (or a boy) and sometimes it can also be common to name a daughter after her dad (I know- super weird, but the girl names James, Murray, Sullivan, Collins, etc are names that came out of this!) So I guess some of those name choices might be why I love super duper unique names!!! Hugs! Been watching your lists since 2017!!

I’m definitely the type to knock a baby name off of my list once it’s on the top 1000 for girls and top 800 for boys or if i’ve heard of more than one person using it. It makes me so sad when names get more popular Wren had been on the top of my name list since I was a kid! But I’m worried it’s going to boom around the time I name my baby

I find this stuff fascinating! Here are some names that are going down in the US (looking at top 30 from 2016 to 2019): Girls- Madison (-11) (because every other new mother's named Madison lol) Grace (-9) Riley (-8) Lily (-10) Aubrey (-20) (maybe cause the doc "Audrey and Daisy" came out in 2016? Though Daisy jumped 20 points from 2016-17 so idk) Lillian (-9) Addison (-18) Boys- Jacob (-6) Michael (-6) Matthew (-8) David (-8) Gabriel (-12) Jayden (-8) Anthony (-8) Harper (10) and Jackson (17) actually haven't moved in the US at all from 2016-2019. Do you think the US trends influence British trends more or vice versa?

It's important to keep in mind that going down in the charts may only mean that different names are overtaking them in popularity, not that people find them outdated yet. Of course, as people mentioned, people are always looking for unique and different names so the top names will always change, but that doesn't mean the names that were previously the top are now unpopular, just not quite as popular. Do you think this trend is happening because of dislike for a name? I wonder if, like you said with the expanse of name choices growing, some of these names are dropping ( like Esme ) not because they are going out of fashion but because there is a wealth of option, and so other names are available to be selected. So if there are 100 babies and 1000 names to choose from maybe Esme or Harper not being chosen is a result of a sort of spoiled for choice affect rather than a dislike for these names ?

It's so fun seeing the differences between naming in the UK and the US. In the states Harper is a top 10 name and has been in our top 100 for almost 10 years. I'm not a fan of it myself but it's interesting to see how popular it is here while being a passing trend where you are. Esme does surprise me just because it's so lovely and feels like an unexpected vintage gem to me. Aurora is very pretty but I know a lot of people struggle with getting tongue tied on this one. Again this is an interesting US/UK difference. Aurora has been in the US top 100 for 4 or 5 years and is still climbing- slower but still steadily. So Archie is my son's nickname and his surname is Harris, and even though we are in the US I had no less than 10 people text or tag me on social media within an our of Meghan and Harry announcing their son's name. 😂 I kind of can't stand the name Jackson. If we go by playground statistics that lump all spellings together, it's the #1 boy name in the states. I hear it everywhere and honestly I don't get the appeal. I like Jack well enough, and I think Jacques is quite a nice alternative, but Jackson just makes me think of Andrew Jackson or Jackson Mississippi.

@@audrieking7109 ooh thats so awesome! We were once shopping and had a cashier named Jerikka as well. Only one we have ever met. I have always liked names that are a little different. People can be touchy about it , but i can find beauty in almost every name. Everyone goes into naming thier kid with love, so who is anyone else to shame it, ya know? Thanks for the comment! Im going to tell my daughter. 💕

I've been looking at names for the last 4 years and I was in love with the name Ophelia. It took me 2 years to convince my husband to be *it* if we had a girl (though he still wasn't loving it) but every year it was going up on the list and it kinda put me off from using it. We then had a baby girl and I fell in love with another name but I'm still looking on the National Statistics list where my favourite names are and Ophelia really surprised me this year as it went down 16 places! 2019 - ranked 177 - 282 babies 2018 - 161 - 335 2017 - 212 - 243 2016 - 283 - 177 babies So I guess this name could also be classed as a fast fashion name? Though I think I'd still use it if we had another girl💕
