I grew up in an abusive home, and I really love the idea of evil toys. Poppy's Playtime is really great, for example. I really wish movies about evil toys would dig deeper into child abuse, the power adults have over children, and not excuse things like mental illness or abuse with magical reasons. I was interested in this, and might still watch it, but yeah, a third act in an imaginary world is super meh. It's like "mankind doesn't need the help" of evil spirits, in a way. Especially looking at how well Midsommar explored mental illness and disturbing, real life human behavior, it's amazing how often horror misses this mark. Even Stephen King understands that real horror comes from real life possibilities.

How exactly is a bunch of complete strangers supposed to warn a mother about an inter-dimensional being that kidnaps children and only manifests to certain people without being put in a psych ward? 😂

The highlight was definitely the scene with the therapist, when the daughter turned around and Chauncey was speaking while her mouth wasn't moving was so chilling. Shame that the movie kinda sank after that.

Here is how i would fix it They should have just played Jessica as the kid, and made the father the protagonist. Have Jessica's mother die at the start of the movie. She begins playing with Chauncey, who wants her imagination, after being "betrayed" thousands of years ago. Jessica's father sees his daughter calming down and seemingly acting like a normal kid more. Gloria, an old lady at the time, who begins babysitting Jessica, starts seeing Jessica doing more and more unhealthy and disturbing things, tries to talk to her father. Him, not having known how to take care of a kid, as he was never taught how, ignores Jessica's disturbing actions, writing them off as her copping, and not wanting to confront her on her imaginary freind, as he feels like if he does, it will upset her, and he doesn't want to try and deal with his and his own grief. At this point, if Chauncey is real or not is still up to debate. Under the guidance of Chauncey(we still don't see him), Jessica tells the therapist that her father has been different after her mom died, and she misses her so much. Implying that her father was abusive. (An actual piece of horror for any parent that they are hurting their kid). The therapist tells dad about this, and he gets defensive, saying he has just been having trouble learning to raise her after his wife's death. Therapist suspects the dad is abusing Jessica, and is attributing her father actions of abuse, as a game played between her and her imaginary freind. The climaxe starts, with the therapist calling the cops trying to detain Jessica's dad. Jessica and Gloria are at their house, and Jessica finally opens the door, entering the never ever. Gloria calls 911 after Jessica dissipers. Dad with the cops go to the house. Gloria is asked to give all the information she can at the police station. The cops are killed by Chauncey, and dad escapes the cop car. Finding the door already open, goes to try and find Jessica. He finds his wife and Jessica painting in their yard, with His wife telling him that he must have had a nightmare and it will all be OK now. That her and Jessica are just painting. A bear is sitting next to Jessica(the first time we see the bear outside of a drawing by Jessica. Dad realizes something is wrong and tries to get Jessica to leave. Jessica begins to tell him that she hates him and screaming that he ruined everything! That her mom would still be alive if it wasn't for him. (We now learn that her mom died in a car crash, in which the dad was driving). Dad finally faces his grief, ready to save his daughter takes her and his daughter struggling, As he runs back into their basement. Chauncey catches them as they try to leave, having the dad go insane. Gloria and the cops arrive, seeing Jessica hurt from her own self inflicted injury, the cops killed by what looks a knife, and the cop door where dad was supposed to be. Later, we see dad in a psyc-ward, and Gloria takes custody of Jessica. Stating how she always wanted a child but was born infertile. Later we see Gloria and Jessica painting. We cut to dad in the psyc-ward screaming about how Jessica is going to be hurt and how he has to protect her. Cut back to seeing Jessica drawing Chauncey very well for her age, as Gloria makes her lunch in the kitchen.

I remember seeing the trailer for this and thinking, "this is so hilariously stupid, I can hardly believe it's being released." Is this one of those supposed to be bad movies like sharknado or something? If not, I might actually have to check it out. I enjoy the so-bad-it's-good flicks, but only if they aren't meant to be. The humor comes from knowing someone thought their pile of crap was good.
