The Extraordinary Jabulani Elephant Experience

A Happy World Elephant Day to You! #worldelephantday 🐘💛
Meet the Jabulani Elephants ~ the rescued herd with amazing and unique bonds and very individual characters that make them stand out from one another. As a herd of mostly orphan elephants, this family is blended and includes females and males in a surprisingly and very close-knit family group. Each elephant has a distinctive and special character and shares a unique bond with the rest of the group.
Five elephant calves have been born to the Jabulani herd since 2006, as well as an additional four orphans have been introduced and integrated into the herd, including Jabulani, Kumbura, Timisa and Khanyisa.
The intra-herd dynamics have changed significantly over the years and constantly teach us of the depth of empathy and compassion that elephants are capable of. This herd has taught people around the world about not only the beauty of their species but also the values of family and acceptance, as they welcome orphan calves into their herd, to ensure that those affected by human-elephant conflict can start life again with a family of their own.
The herd have educated and amazed our guests, through the evolved Jabulani experience, where our safari visitors can watch the herd at the dam, swimming or drinking, or foraging in the bush as they do from sunrise to set with dedicated carers to keep them safe. The most spectacular sight comes at sunset at the waterhole as the herd round the dam to head back to the homestead for the night, showing their great silhouettes on the water, lit up by the African sun.
These are experiences that go a step further in contributing to conservation on the ground, as each Jabulani guest is helping us to support and care for the herd by simply staying with us. The elephants' personalities really come alive as you spend more time with them, revealing the intricacies of elephants and the importance of protecting the species.
Come and visit us at Jabulani in our South African wilderness and experience the elephants for yourself, meet some of the bulls on foot and witness an African sunset as you've never seen it before.

Wonderful to see the young people. There’s so much they can learn, particularly from elephants, but most importantly of course is that the future of the earth’s wildlife and overall environment rests in their hands.

His tusk broke off while going to work on a tree. It's not too unusual for elephants, as they display lateral dominance :)

  • @SandraNelson063

I believe that it is the male elephants that they are introduced to. Sebokwe , the great lord of the herd, has trained the males to behave in a very calm and reasonable way, until more protective actions are needed. The females, on the other hand, go immediately into full battle rage at the SLIGHTEST hint of upset to the youngsters. The females would never permit strangers near the babies.

On walks in the Big 5 wilderness our rangers have to carry rifles for protection but they are trained to not have to use them by being able to read the bush and animals and retreat or stand their ground when necessary. It is a precautionary measure as in other big 5 reserves. They also carry radios for communication in case of trouble but protecting themselves and guests is vital. Shooting at the ground can scare off predators if there is trouble.
